TITLE SLIDE
Dear All,
First of all, I would like to share the content of my talk. I will start by introducing you our lovely town, Bodrum. Then, I will continue with the explanation of Smart City, what is our perspective and what kind of tasks we accomplished in Bodrum. Later, I will try to differentiate in between smart city and smart tourism concept. Finally, I will talk about future work.
As you can see on the map, Bodrum resides in the South West of Turkey, near Aegean Sea.
And here in this image, you can see the Bodrum peninsula with its smaller districts like the center, Bitez, Turgutreis, Ortakent, Torba and the others….
In this image, you see the famous Bodrum Castle. The Bodrum Castle is a historical landmark. The Castle was built by the Order of St. John of Jerusalem under the mastership of The Grand Master Philibert de Naillac, at the beginning of 15th century A.D., and ruled by them almost 120 years until the conquest of Rhodes by Suleiman I (Suleiman The Magnificent) in 1522. In Ottoman Period, the Bodrum Castle is used as a small garrison base and in 1895 it was transformed into a prison. During the 1st World War, the castle was bombed on the 26th of May 1915 by a French battleship. Today, the Bodrum Castle is home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, which is unique in Turkey, and one of the most significant Underwater Archaeology Museums in the world.
Our town has a quite active night life. Especiall in summer time, it is 24/7 living area.
Bodrum has both popular and isolated beaches, lovely bays, and host the famous Bodrum Cup
We also have a unique architectural style with full of lovely cube-shaped white-washed houses.
According to Bodrum Peninsula Promotion Foundation, in 2018, the number of foreign visitors was more than 1.1 million and in 2019, we reached approximately 1.5 milion.
In terms of the local tourists, we were close to 1.8 million which is 10 times more than our city population.
Bodrum has all the key elements of tourism. We host one of the seven wonders of the ancient World and many historical sites.
Besides, we live in a naturally miraculous place. Bodrum tangerine is especially unique in its own league.
At last but not least, we care for our folk culture and rich cultural heritage components.
Now I will continue with our smart city perspective and try to frame what we have been doing.
According to UNWTO, by 2050, 66% of the World’s population is expected to live in urban areas.
Question is, how to supply:
safe food
clean water
sufficient energy
social, economic and environmental sustainability
Definitely at this point, we have to consider to be a city that is self-sufficient, that is smart enough to live with its own resources. To be a city producing more, consuming less.
If we are on the way of creating smart cities, we need to ask some basic questions as the municipality.
1-What do our citizens expect? Under this bullet, we have a lot of questions.
2-What can we offer to them? Here, we need to follow state-of-the-art scientific approaches and we should be very careful.
First of all, we need to understand the idea of being connected. Actually this scheme is showing the Internet of Things structure which is the core structure of being smart. In this century, houses, cars, mobile phones, PCs, buildings, energy itself, everything is connected somehow. This circulating data should give us an idea about being connected. The question is, how to analyze this circulating data and how to use it for good? Maybe, we need to start with understanding the connected components first.
These connected components include many things like power, water, our services, transportation, health and man others.
In terms of power, we have to ensure safe and efficient power generation from hydro, marine, solar, wind power, fossil fuels, nuclear and geothermal sources.
Regarding water, we need to ensure the safe and efficient functioning of electrical and electronic water extraction and management systems (pumps, motors, valves, sensors, etc.) that maintain water pressure and bring clean water to high-rise buildings, industrial facilities, irrigation, etc. and treat and recycle waste water.
As municipality, we should ensure the safe and efficient Access to citizen data. We have to develop innovative services. We have to fight with wild waste storage systems and various types of pollution.
In buildings, we need to ensure the safety and efficiency of household and office appliances like TV, fridge, mobile phone, video game, we have to consider home automation, including lighting, ventilation, air conditioning, heat-pumps, alarm and surveillance systems, etc.
In terms of transportation, we have to ensure the safety and efficiency of all electrical and electronic infrastructure for electric and hydrogen buses, cars, e-scooters and e-bikes. All the supporting infrastructure, : lights, displays, turn-styles, ticketing, escalators, etc. Besides, the safe and efficient functioning of the majority of the electrical and electronic equipment used in airports: at check-in, for luggage transport and tracking, runway lighting, security and access control, biometric readers, etc. and in airplanes: radio equipment, flight surveillance, etc. Should be checked.
We should also frequently control the safety and efficiency of all electric and electronic devices used for prevention, diagnosis or treatment in hospitals, at the dentist or the doctor.
There are many things to consider that we are aware. And until now, we could go only one by one.
In terms of our Zero Waste Policy, we recycle the electrical and electronic waste. Besides, we promote this facility everywhere to create awareness.
Again, in terms of our Zero Waste Policy, we collect old clothes and either send them to appropriate places or recycle them. We again promote this policy everywhere to create awareness.
In our web site, we have an electronic municipality system. Here, our citizens can do fast payments, check electronic bills, learn land meter square prices, building and wearing costs, track and verify their documents and get further info.
In order to be transparent to the citizens, we share our city council videos alive so that they can learn about what we did and what we plan to do.
Because we know that transparency brings integrity.
We have 11 wastewater treatment plants. This is the highest number among the districts of Mugla Metropolitan Area.
Our municipal solid waste treatment plant is going to be active soon. Here our purpose is to create an energy efficient electricity production area.
With conventional solid waste collection, environmental pollution increases. Bad smell problem arises. Infection grows and number of insect vectors rise. Methane gas causes fires and we pollute ground and surface water.
However with treatment, we have cleaner environement, clean water and soil. We can produce compost fertilizer, reduce carbon release. We can recycle the package waste and produce electricity from storage gas. Nowadays we work on this.
I strongly believe that free and easy Wireless Access is quite important to collect meaningful data from both the citizens and tourists. This application is seen quite often in Amsterdam and Barcelona. Our pilot area is our marina. We started the free wireless service in marina. We aim to analyze the density of visitors and thei tendencies from here.
Bodrum Tangerine has a unique taste, unique smell and it is globally competitive.
Our products are fully organic. This is why we consider our tangerine farms as an attractive agri-tourism examples. However, meanwhile, we need to take care of Mediterranean fruit flies and we have to do it using natural approaches. We fight with these flies using pheromone traps.
Of course we have many questions in our minds and we ask them constantly to ourself as the municipality.
1-What do we do for air pollution?
2-What do we do for smart Street lights?
3-What do we do for better data collection and IoT?
4-What do we do for digital training?
5-What do we do for electric vehicle charging?
6-What do we do for smart parking?
7-How much we invest in technology?
8-Can we build up a technopolis in Bodrum?
9-Can we attract entrepreneurs from ICT field?
10-How can we collect more data?
And many more questions like what did we do today for:
Waste reduction
reduced energy and water consumption
increased quality of public transportation
more green spaces
higher awareness of residents and tourists….
After showing our perspective in terms of being a smart city, now we can continue with smart tourism destination concept.
Now, as we start to talk about smart tourism destination, the questions change a little bit. Now we have to ask these 2 things at the same time. What do the citizens expect and what do the tourists expect? Citizens will ask for sustainable life quality and smart economy. Meanwhile, tourists will ask for a qualified experience and again the smart economy. Now, let’s check the definition first.
Smart tourism destinations are special implementations of smart cities. Here the aim is to increase the quality of the lives of the tourists as well as citizens through smart technologies.
Lopez de Avila has a very nice definition which I want to repeat here: Smart Tourism Destination is an innovative tourist destination, built on an infrastructure of state-of-the-art technology guaranteeing the sustainable development of tourist areas, accessible to everyone, which facilitates the visitor’s interaction with and integration into his or her surroundings, increases the quality of the experience at the destination, and improves residents’ quality of life
We have a very critical key point here. We have to focus on the tourist who are sensitive to resource protection and sustainability
Numbers matter but sustainability matters more!!
Now let’s see what the market requires: Firstly we need great predictive capabilities in tourism. In order to do that, we have to work hard on Big Data Analysis, IoT, Industry 4.0 applications. We have to adapt digital transformation so that we use emerging Technologies like AI and ML in travel. We have to consider shared economy and work on more communication – actually a smarter communication. We also need more human friendly approaches in the age of automation. VR, AR, mobile aplications should be developed accordingly.
We have to Inspire tourists. Make them plan. Make them book. Make them stay. Make them come back.
Therefore, our approaches should be innovative. We have to adapt sustainable tourism and business models. And we have to be unique!!
We have to focus on:
Need
Priority list
Competitiveness
Choosing right local and national stakeholders
Usage of technology before, during ans after the travel
I like to share a nice drawing from Prof. Buhalis paper. The ecosystem of stakeholders. We have the host population, tourists, public sector and government, tour operators and tourism enterprises.
All these stakeholders invest time and Money and they have responsibilities, so we need to find the balance
Smart is actually about building a smart ecosystem with correct stakeholders
Therefore, we try to focus on the awareness of stakeholders. We frequently check the state of the art scientific approaches to adapt.
This table is from the Smart City – Smart Tourism paper of Ercan and Dalgın. Let’s check the usage areas and regarding Technologies a little bit. For instance, Mobile applications, NFC, SMS, wearable tech, Ar, VR, GPS, recommendation systems are used for Mobile payment, IR, Museums, ancient sites, location data. Or, Internet of Things(IoT), RFID, NFC, mobile applications, Beacon tech, sensors are used for Bus stops, mobile phone charge areas, IR and communication, translation, crowd management, tourist bus services, tourist location track
As Bodrum Municipality, we are raising our smart tourism plans on appropriate usage areas for now, e.g. information retrieval, digital transformation in museums, mobile payment systems, transportation efficiency, event data, power management. And we focus on digital tour guides, immediate GPS data gathering, density resolution, crowd management, others..
In the book of Cabi, she is sharing a smart hotel management components for instance. These components are smart people, smart service, smart environement, smart communication and smart accessibility. Many hoteliers worldwide still do not know all of the subcomponents or even if they know, they do not interpret the data they collect. We, Bodrum municipality, also try to create awareness among hoteliers for smarter approaches.
In May, we hosted the National Digital Tourism Congress. We discussed the digital transformation in marketing, e-commerce and fast payment systems.
As I said before, we host one of the seven wonders of the ancient World which is called Mausoleum. Starting from this unique artefact, we will continue our digital transformation journey in cultural tourism. Therefore….
We created a new mobile app, Mausoleum AR which will be active at the end of the month. It is a gamification based augmented reality application which shows the 3D AR model of mausoleum, informs the user with text and images and ensures the learning by a quiz mechanism.
Now the future work..
In the future, we will continue to work closely with hoteliers, marines and all tourism stakeholders for digital transformation trainings.
We will continue to build up a strategy for enhancing visitor satisfaction
We will integrate state-of-the art AI and ML techniques in business models
We will use town-twinning projects to share know-how and develop use cases
We will continue to ask these questions:
What did I do for the digital transformation in cultural tourism and museums?
Do I have data collection sensors, free wifi and multi-language support in museums?
What did I do to collect data from the visitors and to provide customized service?
Did I Exchange know-how with my sister cities?
Did I provide digital transformation trainings in hotels, restaurants and other service areas?,
Do I have city interactive maps?
As Bodrum municipality, we know that we are just in the beginning of the smart city/smart tourism destination road but we spend time and Show effort on embracing the required techniques. These 2 concepts are going hand-in-hand and we never forget this. Our purpose is to build up a sustainable city knowledge.
Thank you very much for your time and listening to me.
