he beaches south of San Diego boast some of the world’s best waves for surfing.
These days, however, most surfers avoid the temptation. For it is here that the heavily
polluted Tijuana River flows across the international border from Mexico and empties
into the Pacific Ocean, disgorging millions of gallons of untreated wastewater.
“When it rains, I call it the
sewage tsunami,” says surfer and
environmentalist Serge Dedina.
“For 40 square miles, from Im-
perial Beach to Coronado, there
is a brown plume as far as the
eye can see.”
Such incidents occur when
heavy rains overwhelm the abili-
ty of sewage treatment plants to
process wastewater. San Diego’s
coastal waters receive stormwa-
ter runoff when rains wash pollutants into local rivers.
Across the border in the Mexican city of Tijuana, the
aging, leaky sewer system becomes clogged with de-
bris, causing raw sewage to overflow into the streets
and, eventually, into the Tijuana River.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT OF PRACTICE
In my narration as a human services professional, I want to admit that this particular job requires a lot of passion and determination as it majorly seek to assist others in several dimensions that ranges from simple cases to very complicated cases. As a human service professional, I have served in various disaster prone areas within the USA and in this assignment, I would majorly base my narration to the recent disaster of hurricane Harvey that struck the gulf coast constituting Texas and Louisiana in USA on august 25th, 2017 (Dickerson, 2017)
Narrative Analysis of demographic changes in the selected community
In reaction to the disaster of hurricane Harvey, as a human services worker attached to the American Red Cross, I led a team of social workers in restoring the condition of the area affected and w equally assisted people who required assistance during and after the aftermath of the hurricane. We first got information that the gulf coast that constituted of Texas and Louisiana were under hurricane and I immediately assembled a team and all the materials that could assist in the residents of the gulf coast. Hurricane Harvey had really caused a lot of damage and to some extent quite a large number of people had been affected.
According to the CBS news, (2017) the population of people who had inhabited the gulf coast consisting of the state of Louisiana and Texas were estimated to be 320,000. After hurricane Harvey, a total of 63 people lost their lives as a result of the cyclone. Most deaths were caused as a result of the contaminated air that had affected people who were offshore of the gulf coast. Many of those deaths confirmed in 11 Texas counties happened when people were caught in quickly rising floodwaters or lost control on water-logged roads, emergency management officials said. A specific causality involved a family consisting of six members whose van were swept away by the flood waters.(CBS news, 2017) as we continued assisting the people who had been affected by the hurricane, we established that more than 30,000 people were displaced as we set up temporary homes to assist them alongside other organizations. Furthermore, the infrastructure was worst hit that made about 200,000 customers of the gulf coast be cut away from electricity supply. At the end of the rescue and relief operation we established that our efforts and other 60 organizations assisted about 246,000 residents of the gulf coast

he beaches south of San Diego boast some of the world’s best waves for surfing.
These days, however, most surfers avoid the temptation. For it is here that the heavily
polluted Tijuana River flows across the international border from Mexico and empties
into the Pacific Ocean, disgorging millions of gallons of untreated wastewater.
“When it rains, I call it the
sewage tsunami,” says surfer and
environmentalist Serge Dedina.
“For 40 square miles, from Im-
perial Beach to Coronado, there
is a brown plume as far as the
eye can see.”
Such incidents occur when
heavy rains overwhelm the abili-
ty of sewage treatment plants to
process wastewater. San Diego’s
coastal waters receive stormwa-
ter runoff when rains wash pollutants into local rivers.
Across the border in the Mexican city of Tijuana, the
aging, leaky sewer system becomes clogged with de-
bris, causing raw sewage to overflow into the streets
and, eventually, into the Tijuana River.

In my narration as a human services professional, I want to admit that this particular job requires a lot of passion and determination as it majorly seek to assist others in several dimensions that ranges from simple cases to very complicated cases. As a human service professional, I have served in various disaster prone areas within the USA and in this assignment, I would majorly base my narration to the recent disaster of hurricane Harvey that struck the gulf coast constituting Texas and Louisiana in USA on august 25th, 2017 (Dickerson, 2017)
Narrative Analysis of demographic changes in the selected community
In reaction to the disaster of hurricane Harvey, as a human services worker attached to the American Red Cross, I led a team of social workers in restoring the condition of the area affected and w equally assisted people who required assistance during and after the aftermath of the hurricane. We first got information that the gulf coast that constituted of Texas and Louisiana were under hurricane and I immediately assembled a team and all the materials that could assist in the residents of the gulf coast. Hurricane Harvey had really caused a lot of damage and to some extent quite a large number of people had been affected.
According to the CBS news, (2017) the population of people who had inhabited the gulf coast consisting of the state of Louisiana and Texas were estimated to be 320,000. After hurricane Harvey, a total of 63 people lost their lives as a result of the cyclone. Most deaths were caused as a result of the contaminated air that had affected people who were offshore of the gulf coast. Many of those deaths confirmed in 11 Texas counties happened when people were caught in quickly rising floodwaters or lost control on water-logged roads, emergency management officials said. A specific causality involved a family consisting of six members whose van were swept away by the flood waters.(CBS news, 2017) as we continued assisting the people who had been affected by the hurricane, we established that more than 30,000 people were displaced as we set up temporary homes to assist them alongside other organizations. Furthermore, the infrastructure was worst hit that made about 200,000 customers of the gulf coast be cut away from electricity supply. At the end of the rescue and relief operation we established that our efforts and other 60 organizations assisted about 246,000 residents of the gulf coast

Flood Study
This report analyzes how tidal flooding is expected to increase along the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts over the next 15-30 years due to rising sea levels. Many communities will see flood frequencies triple or more. By 2045, tidal flooding could become almost daily in some locations. The increased flooding will disrupt communities by limiting access and damaging homes and businesses. - 1. Restoring the Gulf Coast For my project, I was assigned the Coastal South, a region that consists of the land along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts from southeastern Virginia to the Mexican border. I chose to concentrate on the state of Louisiana when trying to find an organization to work with. Louisiana has suffered plenty of damage over the past couple of years, including Hurricane Katrina and most recently, an oil spill right off of the coast. Last April, the Deepwater Horizon (a semi-submersible drilling rig) exploded southeast of the coast of Louisiana. The oil gushed from the tower at the rate of 210,000 gallons per day, which is equal to 1 Olympic size swimming pool every 3 days. This oil spill has a detrimental effect on the environment. It affects wildlife including turtles, mammals, fish, and birds. In order to avoid any more damage and begin to truly restore the Gulf, Congress needs to pass the Restore Act. Under the Clean Water Act, BP and all other responsible parties will be required to pay fines for the damage they have caused to the environment. The amount of money is based on the number of barrels spilled and could reach upwards of $21 billion. The problem is that the law does not specify that the fine dollars will be used to repair environmental damage caused by the disaster. It is vital that Congress passes legislation as soon as possible. That is why support for the Restore Act is crucial from all states. I contacted Dustin Renaud, a member of the Audubon Society in Baton Rouge about working with them, and he asked me to help in their efforts to advocate for the funding that is needed to help restore the Gulf after last years oil spill. To do this, I took on the task of spreading information about the disaster and seeking out support from those on campus who would like to help. I was able to get 42 postcards, as well as some
- 2. online submissions, sent to our senator Frank Lautenberg. He is the senior senator of New Jersey, so his vote will have the most impact. I also sent out a personal email to our Senator, discussing the Act and why I believe he should support it. In addition, I documented my project and other information regarding Louisiana and the Restore Act on my blog: http://yourcoastismycoast.blogspot.com/. The blog has averaged about 70 page views, which I hope has spread some awareness or sparked interest in others to help. I hope that even the small amount of advocating that I did will make an impact on his vote and ultimately the passing of the Restore Act.
