Survivor Outreach Services provides
support lifeline to family members

Three years ago, Kristen Santos-
Silva was the Family Readiness Pro-
gram group leader at Fort Bragg,
N.C.
On March 22, 2010, her husband,
Sgt. 1st Class Carlos Santos-Silva, was
killed in action when an IED exploded
while he was serving in the southern
region of Afghanistan.
Santos-Silva knew about Survivor
Outreach Services through her work
organizing activities for military fami-
lies, but she never imagined that one
day she would seek out the program’s
assistance.
“The possibility when they deploy
is always in the back of your mind,”
Santos-Silva said. “But you don’t think

Youth Sports complex ready for spring season

The Fort Meade Cougars finally have
a place to call home after years of prac-
ticing and competing on various fields
throughout the area.
Games will begin at the newly reno-
vated Youth Sports complex off Reece
Road starting Friday and Saturday when
soccer and baseball teams kick off their
seasons.
The 34-acre complex will be the per-
manent home of the once nomadic Cou-
gars’ football, baseball, T-ball and soccer
teams.
“We’ve been strung out for so long,”
said Matthew Sagartz, Youth Sports and
fitness director with Child, Youth and
School Services. “This is amazing. We
have everybody at one location. This is
