Nowadays, most of the films are made in the
EEUU or in the UK. But in Spain also films are
made but they don’t become as popular as
the films in the other countries mentioned.
Here some of those films:
“Lo imposible” (The impossible):
• This film was directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, a
spanish director, but the actors in this film are
from EEUU, like Naomi Watts and Ewan
McGregor. This film was one of the most
successful in 2012 because it hadn’t the premiere
only in Spain, also in many other countries. This
film is about a family that was spending their
Christmas holidays in Thailand when one day,
when they were in the pool, there was an
earthquake causing two tsunamis. This film is
based on a true story.
“El orfanato” (Orphanage):
• This film was directed by the same director as The
Impossible. In this case, the main character,
Laura, is an spanish actress called Belén Rueda.
Laura settled with her family in the orphanage
where she grew up as a child. Her purpose is to
open a home for disabled children. The
atmosphere of the old house wakes up the
imagination of his son, who starts being left
dragging for the fantasy. The games of the child
worry increasingly Laura, who starts suspecting
that in the house there is something that
threatens her family.

• This is a film directed by Alejandro Amenábar, a
spanish director. The main character, Hypatia,
was played by Rachel Weisz. This film is based on
the VI century. Hypatia, philosopher and
atheistic, fights to save the wisdom of the ancient
world, without perceiving that her young slave

practises privately and the freedom that might
reach joining the unstoppable ascent of the

“Las aventuras de Tadeo Jones” (Tad,
the lost explorer):
• This film is for kids. It’s a spanish movie
directed by Enrique Gato. This film is about a
boy who wants to be an archaeologist. People
think he’s a famous archaeologist so he have
to save a mythical lost city from an evil
treasure hunting company.
“Volver a empezar” (Start over again):
• This film was directed by José Luis Garci in 1982.
Antonio Miguel Albajara (Antonio Ferrandis)
arrives to Gijón, his hometown, from Stockholm,
where he had just received the Nobel prize of
literature. For forty years he has been teacher of
Medieval Literature in Berkeley’s prestigious
University (California), where he has alternated
his educational labor with the literary production
that has given him world reputation.
