1) Researchers have questioned the findings of a recent UNODC/OBP survey of Somali pirates that identified navy patrols, prison time, and social disapproval as the main deterrents to piracy. 2) Interviews with pirates in prison in 2009 revealed that some wanted to avenge their arrest through piracy while others said they would return to piracy due to lack of alternative employment. 3) Private ship security has been a more important tool than navies in stopping Somali piracy, with statistics showing private security foiled over twice as many attacks as navies from 2011-2012.
