Two Commitment Levels As Indicative Of Marital Expectations
In the project, we used two competing commitment models to examine newlywed women’s expectations of infidelity and divorce: the Investment Model, which predicts commitment from satisfaction (satisfaction with current relationship), relationship investments (time, effort, or money invested in the relationship), and quality of alternatives (third parties that those in the relationship perceive to be an alternative to their current mate), and the Commitment Framework, which describes commitment in terms of personal (desire to be in the relationship), moral (being on a relationship due to held moral principles), and constraint (being in a relationship in order to be able to survive, due to inability to work, etc.) factors.
In this study, we seek to identify which specific components of these models best predict women’s expectations of infidelity and divorce, and newlywed women’s expectations of infidelity and divorce, particularly in the first two years of marriage when satisfaction typically declines.
One hundred and ninety seven women who had been married two years or less completed an online survey. Participants were representative of geographic regions across the U.S.
The study is limited to women because women can support themselves now, as women’s roles in marriages have changed drastically over time. In the past, women had to stay committed for structural reasons, such as inability to provide for themselves financially. Today, more women are part of the workforce, which gives them greater financial freedom and the ability to terminate an unhappy relationship.
It also gives them increased exposure to alternative partners, which puts them at greater risk of infidelity. Such reasons indicate that women may seek personal satisfaction in relationships, which is indicative of personal commitment rather than structural reasons to marry.
Finally, this study focuses on marriages without children, as research shows that children can be a protective factor on marriages. Due to the intractable influence that children impose on relationships, this study only focuses on marriages without children, as children may add a structural commitment, which may confound results.
Findings from this study indicate that women are more likely to expect infidelity if they have low personal commitment, and moral commitment. Also, exposure to alternative partners (e.g., through workforce participation) increased their expectations of infidelity. Women are also more likely to expect divorce if they have lower personal commitment and lower relationship satisfaction. The biggest predictor of infidelity and divorce expectations was personal commitment suggesting that marriage today is based on personal fulfillment or a desire to be in the relationship. When a person no longer feels that they want to be married, their expectations of divorce increase, irrespective of moral or structural obligations.
Practitioners can use this information to help couples make realistic, informed choices about marriage. Marital instability can be reduced by preventing marriages in which partners expect infidelity or divorce from the outset.

Abstract
Marital conflict has deleterious effects on mental, physical, and family health, and three decades of research have yielded a detailed picture of the behaviors that differentiate distressed from nondistressed couples. Review of this work shows that the singular emphasis on conflict in generating marital outcomes has yielded an incomplete picture of its role in marriage. Recently, researchers have tried to paint a more textured picture of marital conflict by studying spouses’ backgrounds and characteristics, investigating conflict in the contexts of support giving and affectional expression, and considering the ecological niche of couples in their broader environment.

Systematic psychological research on marriage emerged largely among clinical psychologists who wanted to better assist couples experiencing marital distress. In the 30 years since this development, marital conflict has assumed a special status in the literature on marriage, as evidenced by three indices. First, many of the most influentialtheories of marriage tend to reflect the view that "distress results from couples' aversive and ineffectual response to conflict" (Koerner & Jacobson, 1994, p. 208). Second, research on marriage has focused on what spouses do when they disagree with each other, and reviews of marital interaction are dominated by studies of conflict and problem solving (see Weiss & Heyman, 1997). Third, psychological interventionsfor distressed couples often target conflict-resolution skills (see Baucom, Shoham, Mueser, Daiuto, & Stickle, 1998).
IS MARITAL CONFLICT IMPORTANT?
The attention given marital conflict is understandable when we consider its implications for mental, physical, and family health. Marital conflict has been linked to the onset of depressive symptoms, eating disorders, male alcoholism, episodic drinking, binge drinking, and out-of-home drinking. Although married individuals are healthier on average than the unmarried, marital conflict is associated with poorer health and with specific illnesses such as cancer, cardiac disease, and chronic pain, perhaps because hostile behaviors during conflict are related to alterations in immunological, endocrine, and cardiovascular functioning. Physical aggression occurs in about 30% of married couples in the United States, leading to significant physical injury in about 10% of couples. Marriage is also the most common interpersonal context for homicide, and more women are murdered by their partners than by anyone else. In the DSM-IV, the chapter titled “Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders” included a diagnosis
of gender identity disorder. This diagnosis has been eliminated and recategorized into its own
diagnostic class. The new grouping—gender dysphoria— reflects substantial changes in
conceptualization.
Substance-related disorders have also been substantially changed in the DSM-5. The most
significant changes are related to diagnostic labels, criteria, and defining terminology.
A brief summary of key changes in these two diagnostic classification groups are provided
below.
Gender Dysphoria
This new DSM-5 classification represents an evolution in the understanding of the
interrelationship between sex and gender. The diagnostic group is categorized by an
incongruence between assigned gender and the experience of gender. There are only three
diagnoses in this group: gender dysphoria, other specified gender dysphoria, and unspecified
gender dysphoria.
Both other specified gender dysphoria and unspecified gender dysphoria include significant
clinical distress or impairment in their diagnostic criteria but do not meet full criteria for a
specific diagnosis in this class. Clinicians should use other specified gender dysphoria and add
the specific reason for the more general diagnosis (e.g., insufficient duration to meet gender
dysphoria diagnosis). The latter diagnosis—unspecified gender dysphoria— is used when
clinicians cannot (or choose not to) identify reasons for the inability to make a more specific
diagnosis, yet clearly observe multiple criteria from the gender dysphoria criteria.
Gender Dysphoria
Distinct criteria sets for the presence of this disorder in children, adolescents, or adults are
outlined in the DSM-5. Language has been altered to include and clarify cultural and
environmental influences as well. The resulting gender dysphoria diagnosis is more narrow and
specific than the former gender identity disorder. In addition, specifiers have changed
dramatically. Those pertaining to sexual orientation previously part of the gender identity
disorder diagnosis have been removed, as it was determined they were not relevant to the
diagnosis of gender dysphoria. A developmental specifier addressing the potential influence of a
biological component was added. In addition, a specifier reflecting the stage or status of
transition was added.
Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders
There are significant differences in this classification, most prominently in the conceptualization
and association of criteria. This category of disorders is marked by activation of the brain reward
system—an intensive experience that may interfere with desire to partake in normal activities

His research focuses on how marriages change or remain stable over time, and in particular how relationship maintenance is constrained or enhanced by the contexts in which it takes place. Currently this includes research on marriages in the military, funded by the Department of Defense, and marriages in low-income populations, funded by the National Institute on Child Health and Human Development.
He received the Gerald R. Miller Award for Early Career Achievement from the International Association for Relationship Research in 2004 and has twice been the recipient of the National Council on Family Relation’s Reuben Hill Research and Theory Award for outstanding contributions to family science. People rarely change their minds about subjects that are important to them. Those who favor gun control today are likely to favor gun control ten years from now, and those who vote for Democratic candidates today are likely to do so throughout their lives.
Yet intimate relationships, and marriages in particular, are the exception to this rule. After two people stand before everyone important to them in the world and publicly declare that they love each other and intend to remain together for the rest of their lives, everything social psychology has learned about the stability of publicly declared opinions suggests that these will be the most stable opinions of all (Festinger, 1957). Yet of course they aren’t. Despite the almost uniform happiness and optimism of newlyweds, most first marriages will end in divorce or permanent separation (Bramlett & Mosher, 2002), and the rate of dissolution http://bestofassignment.com for remarriages is even higher (Cherlin, 1992).
In most cases, this represents a drastic and unwanted change in a highly valued belief, a change that is emotionally and financially costly to both members of the couple. 1.1 Introduction
Research states that half of marriages in the United States will end in divorce, and about half of American children will experience the divorce of their parents before the age of 18 (Amato, 2000; Copen et al., 2012). According to the US Census Bureau, The rate of divorce in America is computed as the number of divorces relative to 1,000 married ladies, during the late 1980s and early 1990s; the rate of divorce reached a historic high of 22.6 divorces (United States Census Bureau, 2013). Marital conflict has deleterious effects on mental, physical, and family health, and three decades of research have yielded a detailed picture of the behaviors that differentiate distressed from nondistressed couples. Review of this work shows that the singular emphasis on conflict in generating marital outcomes has yielded an incomplete picture of its role in marriage. Recently, researchers have tried to paint a more textured picture of marital conflict by studying spouses’ backgrounds and characteristics, investigating conflict in the contexts of support giving and affectional expression, and considering the ecological niche of couples in their broader environment.

Systematic psychological research on marriage emerged largely among clinical psychologists who wanted to better assist couples experiencing marital distress. In the 30 years since this development, marital conflict has assumed a special status in the literature on marriage, as evidenced by three indices. First, many of the most influentialtheories of marriage tend to reflect the view that "distress results from couples' aversive and ineffectual response to conflict" (Koerner & Jacobson, 1994, p. 208). Second, research on marriage has focused on what spouses do when they disagree with each other, and reviews of marital interaction are dominated by studies of conflict and problem solving (see Weiss & Heyman, 1997). Third, psychological interventionsfor distressed couples often target conflict-resolution skills (see Baucom, Shoham, Mueser, Daiuto, & Stickle, 1998).
IS MARITAL CONFLICT IMPORTANT?
The attention given marital conflict is understandable when we consider its implications for mental, physical, and family health. Marital conflict has been linked to the onset of depressive symptoms, eating disorders, male alcoholism, episodic drinking, binge drinking, and out-of-home drinking. Although married individuals are healthier on average than the unmarried, marital conflict is associated with poorer health and with specific illnesses such as cancer, cardiac disease, and chronic pain, perhaps because hostile behaviors during conflict are related to alterations in immunological, endocrine, and cardiovascular functioning. Physical aggression occurs in about 30% of married couples in the United States, leading to significant physical injury in about 10% of couples. Marriage is also the most common interpersonal context for homicide, and more women are murdered by their partners than by anyone else. Finally, marital conflict is associated with important family outcomes, including poor parenting, poor adjustment of children, increased likelihood of parent-child conflict, and conflict between siblings. gender dysphoria.
Both other specified gender dysphoria and unspecified gender dysphoria include significant
clinical distress or impairment in their diagnostic criteria but do not meet full criteria for a
specific diagnosis in this class. Clinicians should use other specified gender dysphoria and add
the specific reason for the more general diagnosis (e.g., insufficient duration to meet gender
dysphoria diagnosis). The latter diagnosis—unspecified gender dysphoria— is used when
clinicians cannot (or choose not to) identify reasons for the inability to make a more specific
diagnosis, yet clearly observe multiple criteria from the gender dysphoria criteria.
Gender Dysphoria
Distinct criteria sets for the presence of this disorder in children, adolescents, or adults are
outlined in the DSM-5. Language has been altered to include and clarify cultural and
environmental influences as well. The resulting gender dysphoria diagnosis is more narrow and
specific than the former gender identity disorder. In addition, specifiers have changed
dramatically. Those pertaining to sexual orientation previously part of the gender identity
disorder diagnosis have been removed, as it was determined they were not relevant to the
diagnosis of gender dysphoria. A developmental specifier addressing the potential influence of a
biological component was added. In addition, a specifier reflecting the stage or status of
transition was added.
