Migrant Workers and the Canadian Immigration system

Temporary worker system is a mechanism set up to benefit Canadian
Capitalist We will argue through wage discrimination and exploitation of
workers …… and living condition that capitalist benefit few at the cost of
taking advantage of the circumstance of workers from Mexico and Jamaica.
 Wage disparities and discrimination is a major
impact on migrant workers.
Migrant worker Came to Canada to fill the labour market and found how
discriminatory the SAWP system really is.
According to the Employment Agreements, the migrants are to be paid no
less than Canadians performing the same type of work — what is called the
“prevailing wage rate”. Pg.7 Brem, Maxwell Migrant workers in Canada
◦ Hourly wage
◦ Days 6-7
◦ Vacation - paid when workers goes back to country of origin
◦ Long hours in over time do not receive over time payment
◦ Withholding pay
Revenue generate by the SWAT program:
 Employment Insurance
 Canada Pension
 Massive contribution to society
CSAWP workers in Ontario paid $3.4 million in EI premiums in 2001,
although in practice the migrants cannot claim regular EI benefits, which are

 Conflict theory would argue the inequalities the workers experienced is
structural ,systemic and investigate why this stratification exist. Feminist
theory would be in line with conflict theory and argue that gender contribute
to inequalities and discrimination in salaries disparities.
 However, structural Functionalist theory believe in the status quo and
consider this to be normal based on the task the person is doing and the
persons qualification. Thus, functionalist ideology addresses society's need
all the functions for society to work.
 Furthermore, micro perspective would look at the issue from and individual
point and would further investigate the individual condition, motives and
behaviour of the individual.
 In addition, Karl Marx theory indicates the workers are the mode of
production and their surplus are going to the capitalists to maximize their
profit.
The Domestic Worker Program was introduce and many young women from the
Caribbean came to Canada in hope for a better future, to work hard and to send
remittance to their families to their country of origins.
 Immigration Canada aught to make sure employers comply with the
policies and guidelines in which all worker are treated fairly and to
eliminate the polarization discourse, “we” and “they”. Rosalie Abell
Invented two function, equality and equity , employers and immigration
should practice these principles in order for the workers not to feel
excluded and alienated while working in Canada. This includes fair
treatment equal payment and processing of permanent status
