Paul Kilkenny, European Programmes Manager
NCP for SC6 – Europe in a changing world
NCP for ERC – Social Sciences/Humanities
2. Remit of the Irish Research Council in Horizon 2020
“The Irish Research Council
will play a particular role in
supporting the AHSS
community in addition to
supporting and cultivating
the broader community
across all disciplines to
engage in cross and
interdisciplinary
research..” P.14
3. Pillar (3) Societal Challenges
Health & Well Being
Food Security
Sustainable Energy
Green, integrated mobility
Climate & Environment
Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies
Secure societies
4. Embedding SSH in Horizon2020
SSH flagged topics in 2014/2015 WPs (Commission)
5. High Level summary of SC5 Themes with SSH Relevance
WP for SC5 – 2016/2017
The circular economy
Smart cities and communities
Blue growth
Nature based solutions for resilience
Raw materials
Sustainable food security
Climate services/market studies
Cultural heritage for sustainable growth
Adaptive re-use of cultural heritage
6. Cross-cutting calls in SC5 for SSH
Call: ‘Smart Cities and Communities – with Nature Based Solutions’
Topic 1: Demonstrating nature-based solutions in cities
Sub-topic 2017: Nature-based solutions for inclusive urban
regeneration (including regeneration of deprived areas)
develop, deploy, test, demonstrate and upscale in the “front-
runners” cities as 'living laboratories' innovative systemic and yet
locally attuned nature-based solutions co-designed in a multi-
stakeholder and participatory context and at district level for
inclusive urban regeneration reduced crime and security costs,
enhanced human health, wellbeing and social cohesion. The
contribution of social sciences to the design and deployment of
the solutions process is considered necessary;
7. Cross Cutting calls in SC5 for SSH
Call: ‘Blue growth – demonstrating an ocean of opportunity’
Topic 3: Climate impacts on Arctic ecosystem, resources, new
economic activities
Scope: Assess the impact of global warming on Arctic (natural and
human) systems and their effect on availability/accessibility of
resources and the growth of new economic activities,
considering needs of local populations and the economic actors
operating in this vulnerable region, in view of sustainable
development. Actions should address key processes of change and
develop appropriate adaptation and mitigation responses.
8. Cross Cutting calls in SC5 for SSH
Call: ‘Raw Materials’
Topic 3: Raw Materials policy support actions (2016/2017)
Scope: Assess the impact of global warming on Arctic (natural and
human) systems and their effect on availability/accessibility of
resources and the growth of new economic activities,
considering needs of local populations and the economic actors
operating in this vulnerable region, in view of sustainable
development. Actions should address key processes of change and
develop appropriate adaptation and mitigation responses.
9. Opportunity for environmental sciences researchers and
SSH in SC6 WP 16/17
Call: ‘Understanding Europe: Promoting the European Public and
Cultural Space’
Topic 7: Cultural heritage of European coastal and maritime regions
Scope: The research will aim at providing a comprehensive
framework for the preservation of European coastal and maritime
cultural landscapes….The research - multidisciplinary to the extent
required by its inherent and explicit research approach - might
combine approaches and methodologies of cultural heritage
preservation, social sciences and humanities, spatial and
environmental sciences.

13. SIOR – Social Impact Open Repository
» The SIOR initiative was born in the framework of
the IMPACT-EV project (Evaluating the impact and
outcomes of European Social Sciences and Humanities
research), funded by the 7th Framework Programme of
the European Commission
» Within SIOR, researchers or research institutions
describe the social impact of their scientific work. SIOR
also allows researchers to link their social impacts to
research institutions, funders, and ORCID researcher ID.
