Editor's Notes
- To better understand this neighborhood we adopted two main methods: observations and interactions with residents. In our observations, we used photography, films and sound recording to document and analyze the space, We also used urban studies methods to characterize social life in these areas, from commercial avenues to smaller streets. We counted the number of pedestrians, bikes, motorbikes and cars passing through those streets, Documented the difference in age and genders, and Studied residents’ activities and interactions with each others. Our observations helped us understand social life in modern-day hutongs. We also started to identify urban design elements that foster vibrant urban neighborhoods. During the past two weeks, we learned a lot from each other and we are very grateful for this opportunity to collaborate with our Tsinghua peers and spending wonderful moments in Beijing.
