SOCCER & LIFE

A REFLECTION FROM THE 2012 SEASON

       By: Coach Lamber
What I learned this season:

  •
Everyone has potential to be a good soccer player if they so want to be!

  • Determination must be pursued with heart and passion!

  • Jamie Tomcho should have wore shin guards!

  • That soccer and most sports teach you valuable lessons about life.
SOCCER & LIFE LESSONS DEFINITION?

• Lessons that we learned in soccer in which can be applied in life
to become an aspiring individual in society. These lessons will
help you through the thick and thin and love life to the fullest.
Lessons that will help you stay happy and feel alive rather than
  just exist!

• Life is such a precious gift, and to not strive daily to live your
  best self is dangerous.
LESSON # 1 -- WE NEED TEAMMATES

• You can't do it alone. You can't win a game alone. There's 11
people on the field. You are a brotherhood and need to support
one another. Just like life, you need good parents, mentors,
teachers, coaches, etc to help you win in life. These individuals
help support you in all you do in life. They're here to be a
listening ear or body to hug. We need each other.
LESSON # 2 – YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD

• Champions aren’t born out of minimal effort. The best players
that teams want aren’t ones whom lack work ethic. The best
players in the world work hard around the clock. They practice
through and through until they perfect a skill. Like life, we must
work hard. If you want to aspire and be something great in this
life, you have to work hard every single day. Hard work ALWAYS
pays off. Always. Maybe not in the time you want it (and usually
when you least expect it,) but it will pay off.
LESSON # 3 – COMMUNICATION COUNTS

• Verbal communication leads to some of the best plays ever
made on a field. Half our goals scored this year was by
someone calling for a pass. We have to communicate with one
another at all times on the field. Same goes for life. You must
communicate and talk with one another. Stay in touch and don’t
disappear until next Fall season returns! Keep in contact.
Hangout. Text/Call one another just to see how they’re doing.
(bonus: The more you stick tight, the higher the team chemistry
  next season!)
LESSON # 4 – WE HAVE TO BE PASSIONATE!

• If you aren't giving it 110% then you're going to regret it. To give
anything less in a game could lead to a loss. To give anything
less in life, leads to "dogging" it and frustrations. And worst of
all, it leads to you not becoming your maximum potential as a
player and person in life. We must be passionate in everything
we do. Always put your entire being into everything you do like
it’s the last day you can do it. Put your heart into it.
LESSON # 5 – WE HAVE TO TAKE RISKS

• Are you going to play a safe, short pass? Or are you going to
risk a long ball for a potential breakaway and goal? You can't
always sit in your comfort zone. You WILL have to step out of it
to take (healthy) risks for prosperous outcomes. And if it doesn't
work, it's not a failure, just a teaching moment to better
ourselves for the next time. No matter what, we'll always come
out stronger and smarter if we so choose. Take a risk.
LESSON # 6 – WE MUST HAVE SOME FUN

• You can't be dead serious all the time. Where is the laughter
and joy in only focusing on winning? You have to get out there
and have fun with one another to laugh and enjoy it. Likewise,
life requires abundant amounts of joy and laughter. Sometimes,
it's those small moments on the field or in life, that lead to the
largest memories you hold forever! Have fun.
LESSON # 7 – BE A GOOD SPORT

• If someone pushes you down, you just stand back up and keep
going. If you accidently knock someone over on a play, you help
them back up. If you get cocky in life, you will fail. You must be a
good sport and care about others. The game doesn't revolve
around you, you revolve around the game. Just like in life. Life
isn't all about you you you. It's about you in life. Be a good
coworker, student, and human being. Be a good sport.
LESSON # 8 – MISTAKES HAPPEN. SHAKE IT OFF!

• Although Spain won the world cup in 2010, they made many
mistakes during the game. However, they shook it off and kept
playing hard. You guys make mistakes in the field, shake it off,
fix it, and move on! We all make mistakes in life. The greatest
mistake you can make is to make no mistakes. They help you to
endure. They help you to improve and grow. Strive to make as
little as possible, but when it happens, just shake it off! You
WILL learn from them. Trust me, we’re far from perfect.
LESSON # 9 – BE AN EXAMPLE
• When you’re on the field, you represent Corry soccer. You
represent your coaches, families, friends, teammates, etc. Be an
example of all the things I talked about throughout season and in
this PowerPoint. Likewise in life, you must be an example of
goodness. Don’t conform to the ways of society, be an outlier! Be
you, through and through. Be a person of 150% integrity. Do the
right thing, ALWAYS. Be a helpful, loving person. Do NOT judge
anyone, we all have our demons and struggles. In all situations, be
an example that reflects your duty to be a better person. For your
family. For your friends. For your coaches. And most important, for
  yourself.
LESSON # 10 – ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING

• If you don't have a positive, enthusiastic, great attitude about
the match, then you already lost. Quit hanging your head just
because the other team scored a goal. You can't always stop
100% of the shots taken against you. Likewise life, as you get
older, you'll understand many times, things don't go your way.
And that's okay! But what's your attitude? Everything good
comes out of bad. When something doesn't go your way, then it
was meant to be like that. You learn from it, have faith, and keep
working hard. Have a positive attitude.
FINAL LESSON – BE THANKFUL AND HUMBLED

• You aren’t given this sporting program as a right; Quite the
opposite, actually. It’s an absolute privilege, blessing, and gift
that we get to play. Be thankful with all your heart for that. And
playing it doesn’t make you better than anyone. The exact same
goes for life, it’s an incredible gift. You have been blessed
beyond measure to have the gift of life. Be incredibly thankful to
wake up and be alive each and every day. Don’t ever forget
that. Smile and shine on, gentlemen.
HEART & PASSION. STRENGTH. INTEGRITY.

SEE YOU NEXT SEASON, GENTLEMEN! 
