Smiles (And the meanings they
hold)
~They have a pattern, the two of them.~
Kamui growls from where he stands, stance defensive and claws extended. Somewhere behind him, Subaru
shifts uneasily on his feet, his expression worried.
Fuuma stands in front of them, a smile ever so present on his face.
“Hello, Kamui, Subaru-san,” he says. “Long time no see.”
“Leave,” is the first thing that Kamui says; his voice low and dangerous. His violet eyes turn to molten gold
and his lips are curled into a snarl.
Fuuma merely smiles like he usually does. He shakes his head and this only aggravates Kamui further. “Sorry,
but I can’t. I’m here on a job.” He glances behind Kamui and gives Subaru a cheerful wave. “How are you,
Subaru-san?”
Subaru looks unsure on whether to answer the man or not. He bites his lip and manages a nod. “I’m doing
well,” he allows.
“Glad to hear it.”
Kamui bristles as he watches the two of them talk, growing restless by the moment. He steps closer to Subaru
and grips his hand. “We have to leave,” he tells him.
“Kamui, we just arrived here. If we travel again right away, our strength will be affected,” Subaru points out
gently.
Kamui growls low in his throat, hating the fact that his twin is right. If they do cross dimensions now, they will
end up drained the moment they land in the next world. And with danger constantly on their tail, he knows
that it is not ideal.
Fuuma remains cheerful, his smile ever so bright.Kamui wishes that he could rip it off his face. So instead, he
snarls and narrows his eyes, his posture never relaxing.
“Now, there’s no need to get snippy,” says Fuuma. “If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, you can always
stay with me for the time being,” he offers.
“There is no-“Kamui begins but Subaru beats him to it. “Thank you, Fuuma-san. That would be great.”
Kamui gives his twin a disbelieving look. “Subaru!” he protests. “He is that hunter’s brother!”
“Fuuma-san is not Seishirou-san,” Subaru reminds him in a coaxing tone. “He is not a threat to us.”
“He might report back to his brother about our whereabouts,”Kamui insists.
“You seem to really think highly of my relationship with Seishirou-nii-san,”Fuuma chirps, waving his hand
dismissively. “He won’t know. We hardly meet anyway.”
Kamui’s eyes remains wary and narrowed. He growls again, not bothering to hide his mistrust towards the
hunter. Fuuma does not seem to notice. Or he pretends not to notice.
“Well, you heard him,” he smiles. “Come on, it’s this way.”
Much to his dismay, Kamui sees that Subaru does not hesitate and follows the man, giving Kamui an
apologetic look as he does.
Fuuma gives him a grin and a thumbs up.
Kamui hisses angrily in return.
*
~The pattern is unbroken and repetitive.~
“I don’t trust him,” Kamui says grouchily from where he sits.
Subaru smiles tiredly. “I know, Kamui, I know.” He looks around the small room. It is sparse with a dresser
and a single bed as its only furniture. Across them, Fuuma fiddles with some kind of a device, politely ignoring
the fact that they are talking about him.
“It’s only for a little while,” Subaru adds, hoping to appease his twin. “Only temporary.”
Kamui crosses his arms and looks away. He thinks he sees Fuuma smile as he does so. That bastard. He always
smiles.
Subaru sighs. He turns to Fuuma. “What are you doing, Fuuma-san?” he asks finally, looking at the device in
the man’s hands with an expression akin to curiosity.
Fuuma looks up from it and addresses Subaru with another smile. It would seem that smiling is the only thing
the man ever does and Kamui notes this with irritation.
“Just inspecting the gadget that Watanuki-kun gave me,” Fuuma answers. “He said that this would help me in
my search.”
Subaru tilts his head. Fuuma now knows what his brother means when he mentions how adorable Subaru is.
“Watanuki-kun?”
Fuuma nods. “Yuuko-san is no longer here,” he says in a slightly subdued tone. Kamui turns to the hunter and
notices that his smile slips slightly at the mention of the witch’s name. “So, Watanuki-kun took over the shop.
You remember him, right?” Fuuma’s voice slips back into its cheerful tone so fast that Kamui nearly thinks
that he has imagined the sadness in Fuuma’s voice.
Subaru says nothing for a good minute. His green eyes look down to the floor. “…Oh.”
“Anyway,” Fuuma continues. “My new boss has requested a special item and here I am.”
“Just what are you looking for anyway?” Kamui asks in irritation.
“No idea.”
Kamui blinks. “You have no idea of what you’re looking for.”
Fuuma grins and shakes his head. “None at all.”
“Then how would you know how to find it?” Kamui does not bother hiding his exasperation.
Fuuma simply holds up the device in his hand. “Watanuki-kun says that this thing would blink repeatedly
whenever I’m near the object. I quote ‘You will know what it is when you find it,’” he laughs. “He really sounds
like Yuuko-san, does he?” His tone is fond.
“I hope you find it soon,” says Kamui.
“Thanks for the good luck,” comes the happy reply.
Kamui glares. “Do not misunderstand. The faster you find it, the faster you can leave.”
“And you’ll continue to stay here?” Fuuma feigns surprise. “What if I report back to my dearest older brother
about your whereabouts?”
Kamui growls, his claws extending and his eyes burning gold.
Fuuma smiles, like he always does.
Subaru sighs.
*
~They do not know how it started but it did~
Kamui watches Subaru sleep, his own eyes steadily drooping. He bites the inside of his cheek hard and
welcomes the pain that shoots through him. He cannot afford to let his guard down. Not here. Not now.
The darkened room is quiet. The fan spins above them with a soft whirl. Fuuma is out, still wandering around
the city trying to find whatever it is that he needs to find.
Kamui allows himself to sigh. He hopes that they could move soon. Travelling across dimensions repeatedly
takes a lot of their strength and Kamui could still feel the fatigue within him, preventing him from using the
magic to cross dimensions. He growls in irritation at this fact.
The door opens and Kamui instantly stiffens, hugging his slumbering twin protectively against his chest. He
sees a figure stumbling into the room and a familiar scent hits him hard.
The scent of blood.
“Ah, Kamui.”
Fuuma.
“What the hell happened to you?” Kamui narrows his eyes at the sight of the long gash on Fuuma’s forehead
and the blood soaking his shirt. Subaru shifts in his sleep, reacting instinctively towards the scent of the
blood, but he does not stir.
At times like these, Kamui is glad for the fact that Subaru is a deep sleeper.
“Got attacked,” Fuuma rasps. “Ran into some old company but don’t worry, I handled them just-,” Fuuma
pauses when he notices Kamui staring at him. Or rather, the wound on his forehead. In the darkness of the
room, Kamui’s gold eyes shine brightly.
“Kamui…are you thirsty?” Fuuma asks, despite knowing the obvious answer.
Kamui denies it, regardless. He turns his head away and glares stonily at the wall. “I’m not.”
“I would be very grouchy too if I were to miss my meals several times in a row.” Fuuma’s tone is almost
comforting.
Kamui’s only response is a heated glare sent at his direction.
Fuuma, being Fuuma, returns with a cheerful smile.
Subaru continues to sleep.
*
~And like every other pattern, there is a loop point~
It has been three days and Kamui is beginning to suspect something.
Every night, without fail, Fuuma always returns with some sort of an injury. A scratch on the arm, a cut above
his eyebrow, a split on his lips. He always returns with blood flowing freely out of his veins.
Kamui is beginning to suspect that he does so on purpose.
The hunter makes excuses, of course, saying that he tripped, fell or got attacked. But Kamui’s suspicion grows
when Fuuma never fails to make a light comment about his injury, relating it to Kamui’s (and sometimes,
Subaru’s) growing thirst.
“Such a waste, isn’t it?”
“I should really be more careful, shouldn’t I?”
“I’m rather hungry. Are you?”
Even Subaru is getting concerned, but his concern is purely on Fuuma’s well-being, not his seemingly offer to
be drained dry by a literally bloodthirsty purebred vampire. “Are you sure you’ll be fine this time, Fuuma-
san?” Subaru asks one evening on their sixth day. Fuuma is about to leave yet again, still on the search for the
unknown object.
Fuuma nods. “I’ll be fine. I’ll be more careful this time, I promise.”
“If you end up injured again, I swear I’ll kill you right there and then,” Kamui threatens from somewhere in
the corner of the room.
“Kamui,” Subaru chastises.
Fuuma simply waves his hand dismissively, chuckling. “At least I know Kamui cares.”
His parting gift is Kamui’s murderous glare at the back of his head.
Fuuma returns, much to Kamui’s growing irritation and annoyance, with yet another injury. This time it is a
deep cut. Directly on the neck. It is bleeding pretty heavily, too.
Kamui has had enough.
He is lucky that Subaru is out scouting the area. Or else, he is not quite sure what Subaru would think of his
next action.
“Sorry…got involved in a nasty acc-,” Fuuma’s sentence is cut off when Kamui slams him against the wall and
pulls his head closer. Fuuma has barely any time to blink or catch his breath when he feels a warm breath
ghosting against the skin of his neck.
It is followed by a sharp sting. Fuuma begins to feel dizzy. He grips Kamui’s shoulders tightly, trying to block
out the numbing pain on his neck.
He asks for this after all.
Kamui takes his time drinking Fuuma’s blood. He does it, at first, out of pure spite. If the man wants to become
a prey so badly, then so be it. But when Fuuma’s blood begins to flow into his mouth, his train of thought is
abruptly interrupted.
Maybe it is because of his thirst. Maybe it is due to the fact that he has practically been starving himself these
past several days. But when the man’s blood touched his tongue, he suddenly feels as if he could not get
enough of it. It is strangely intoxicating, in a way that most humans’ blood are not. It makes him feel almost
drunk.
For the first time in a very long while, Kamui feels light-headed as he drinks.
He feels Fuuma gripping his shoulder tighter than before and he knows he has hit the man’s limit. He may not
like the man, but Kamui is not unnecessarily cruel. He stops drinking and lazily licks the wound until it clots.
He pulls away and glances at Fuuma.
The hunter’s skin is paler and his breathing is slightly shallower, but he is still smiling. Damn, that bastard.
“I told you that you were thirsty,” he says, a bit smug despite his harsh breathing.
Kamui punches him in the face.
Subaru returns then, startled by the hunter lying on his side right at Subaru’s feet.
*
~There is sometimes a small change to the pattern, though~
“Kamui?”
“Hm?”
“…”
“What is it, Subaru?”
“…Why do you smell like Fuuma-san?”
*
~The change becomes bigger and more obvious~
“You know, Yuuko-san once said something to me.”
Ten days have passed and Kamui is beginning to grow restless. For some reason, the twins’ magic still refuses
to work and Fuuma still has not found whatever he is finding. So they are still stuck together.
Fast asleep and heavily sated (Kamui thinks it is the willing female donor that Subaru feeds on earlier, though
the woman is, unfortunately, passed out at the moment), Subaru lies on his back, eyes closed and his
breathing slow.
Out of the two of them, Subaru sleeps more and thus more rested. Kamui is too wary to sleep and he is
steadily growing grouchier with each passing day.
Kamui says nothing to the hunter beside him. Fuuma is absently rubbing the wound on his neck, proof to
Kamui’s recent feeding (Subaru remains unaware, or he pretends not to).
“…”
“She said that there is only one thing in the world that comes without a price.”
“…and what would that be?” Kamui hates himself for his curiosity.
Fuuma smiles, quiet and wistful. Different from his other smiles.
“Feelings.”
Kamui is quiet for a moment. “…I suppose she would know,” he allows.
“It makes sense, though,” Fuuma replies, looking at the setting sun outside. “You love someone just because
you do. There is no compensation for it.”
They say nothing more for a while.
Fuuma turns to him, tilting his head a bit. Kamui spares him a glance. “What?”
The wistful smile returns to the hunter’s lips. “I wonder…if Kamui ever misses anyone.”
Kamui’s eyes widen a bit at that. He blinks. He huffs and turns to look outside again, determined to ignore the
hunter.
Fuuma laughs. “I guess that’s a no.”
“…What about you?” asks Kamui after a full minute, finally losing to his curiosity yet again.
“Me?”
“…”
Fuuma seems to consider the question briefly before he turns to the outside view once more. Kamui thinks he
sees something changing in Fuuma’s ever so benign expression.
“I don’t miss anyone. Not when I know I can see that person again.”
*
~Eventually, the pattern changes completely before the two of them realize it~
“Kamui…”
“What is it, Subaru?”
Subaru hesitates and turns to Fuuma. The hunter is fast asleep, his expression smooth. His hands are
bandaged, recently bruised after he falls off a cliff. Kamui follows his gaze. His shoulders stiffens.
“…It’s nothing,” Subaru says at last.
It has been two weeks and Kamui begins to feel his magic returning to him. Soon, they would be able to leave.
They would be able to run further away from the hunter’s older brother.
Subaru excuses himself to hunt that night, and Kamui offers to go with him. Subaru shakes his head.
“It’s fine. I’ll be okay on my own. You have been out the whole day. You must be tired,” Subaru pats Kamui’s
shoulders comfortingly. “Please rest.”
Kamui complies, albeit grudgingly. He stays in the room, occupying himself by staring outside. Subaru has
asked him to rest, and usually he does so by sleeping, but Fuuma’s presence in the room has him on edge and
he refuses to doze off if it means leaving him vulnerable.
He hates feeling vulnerable. He hates the fact that the hunter can make him feel vulnerable.
He glances at Fuuma briefly, studying the man’s sleeping face. Fuuma is breathing lightly and he looks so calm
and peaceful. Like he has no worries at all. Kamui finds himself walking over to the man and kneeling beside
him. He hesitates.
His expression in unreadable when he ever so slowly reaches out to touch Fuuma’s cheek.
It is soft and warm. He could feel the blood flowing underneath the skin. Kamui lets his hand rests there for a
while. Fuuma shifts in his sleep and Kamui stiffens.
But the man merely sighs and leans into Kamui’s touch.
Before he realizes it, a tiny smile tugs the corner of Kamui’s mouth.
Outside the room, Subaru watches the scene with his wise green eyes.
*
~Is it even a pattern anymore?~
Fuuma finds himself alone with Subaru on the sixteenth day. His device has been reacting and he is sure that
he can finally find the object that Watanuki has requested. He wipes his forehead with a handkerchief and
takes a long swig of his water bottle. Beside him, Subaru is quiet, like he usually is.
“Kamui’s sleeping?” Fuuma breaks the silence.
“I…sort of drugged him,” Subaru confesses, looking guilty. “He has not been sleeping properly…so, I put
something in his food at dinner.”
“Smart move,” Fuuma replies in an approving tone. “Though I’m a bit surprised that he did not notice the
change in the scent.”
“…I also wanted to talk to you alone, actually.”
“Oh? What about?”
Subaru shifts on his feet. “Kamui,” he answers simply.
Fuuma continues to look at the vampire with a cheerful expression, as if it is frozen that way. “What about
him?”
“…” Subaru looks at Fuuma directly in his eyes, taking a deep breath before continuing. “I know…that Kamui
have been feeding on you.”
“Because you can smell me on him, right?” Fuuma guesses with a chuckle. “Also, the wounds are not so easy to
hide, are they?” he adds, touching the bandages around his wrist.
Subaru looks troubled for a moment before continuing. “This…is probably none of my business but…Fuuma-
san, I…noticed…” he trails off. Fuuma notices another difference between the vampire twins. While Kamui has
no problem stating his opinions, even if they are insults most of the time, Subaru seems to have trouble
voicing his thoughts without fearing for the person’s reaction.
“What is it?” Fuuma asks gently.
Subaru hesitates again. “You once mentioned that feelings have no price, right?”
“Ah, so you heard that.”
“If feelings come with a price, would you pay yours?”
Fuuma’s smile remains on his face. “Depends on who is it for.”
Subaru frowns and his eyes look troubled again. “Fuuma-san…what if it is for Kamui?”
The two of them stare at one another for one long moment. Fuuma remains smiling for a good minute before
slowly, quietly, the smile softens at the edges before it disappears completely.
“It would be the same, my answer I mean,” he says at last, his voice calm.
“The same?” Subaru sounds confused.
Fuuma gives him a withdrawn smile. “Would you pay your price for the sake of your feelings towards
Seishirou-nii-san?”
There is a drawn pause. Subaru seems to crumble from inside out, gripping his arms for support and looking
down.
“You know the answer,” he whispers.
The hunter’s smile is wide. But it is sad.
“Then you should know mine.”
*
~The two of them are in a standstill, unsure of what to do~
When Fuuma returns alone to his apartment that night (Subaru needs to clear his thoughts and Fuuma could
not blame him), holding the objects he found in his hand, he finds Kamui awake and waiting for him.
They stare at one another.
“So you found the object,” Kamui begins.
Fuuma shrugs. “It would seem so.”
“What is it?”
“Some kind of a stone shaped like a heart. Two of them actually.”
“One of them is brown.”
“And the other is amethyst.”
“…”
“…”
Kamui strides over and takes a hold of Fuuma’s bandaged wrist, rubbing his thumb over the white material of
the bandage. Fuuma just lets him.
“I heard you.”
“Hm?”
“The conversation between you and Subaru.”
“Kamui, eavesdropping is terribly rude,” Fuuma teases. The hand on his wrist tightens in response. Kamui’s
expression is unreadable.
“I want to know your answer.”
“Hm?”
Kamui looks at Fuuma, then, his eyes oddly vulnerable in a not-so-vulnerable way, exposed with uncertainty
yet hidden with a strange kind of confidence. Fuuma merely stares into those amethyst eyes, choosing not to
break the silence this time. Kamui is the one who does, though.
“Would you pay the price for the sake of your feelings?”
Fuuma does not smile this time. He simply looks at Kamui with an incomprehensible expression. His eyes are,
however, radiating with sadness. Funny, how the hunter chooses this very moment to expose his
vulnerability in front of Kamui.
He leans in and whispers something in Kamui’s ear.
Kamui’s eyes darken and abruptly, he pulls Fuuma closer and leans in to kiss him.
*
~One of them makes a move and the other one responds~
The room is quiet aside from the sound of crumpling sheets and shifting limbs. There is a sharp intake of
breath and a soft moan before the room is quiet once more.
Kamui kisses Fuuma, unwilling to tear his lips away from the hunter, fearing what he might say if he does.
Fuuma intertwines his fingers with Kamui’s, holding him in place as he gives an involuntarily thrust when the
vampire arches up against him. Cool fingers trail down Fuuma’s spine, tracing circles as they move.
Their eyes meet.
They do not say a word.
Morning come and Kamui stays where he is briefly, simply staring at the ceiling. He looks at Fuuma, still
sleeping beside him. He touches the hunter’s cheek. Fuuma wakes up then.
He smiles, then.
“Good morning, Kamui.”
And it is heartbreaking.
*
~A new pattern is formed and it begins once more~
“Have a safe journey,” Fuuma grins.
Kamui and Subaru stand in the middle of the park, gripping each other’s hands.
“Take good care of yourself, Fuuma-san,” says Subaru, always polite.
“Of course.”
Kamui says nothing to Fuuma. Fuuma says nothing to Kamui. The magic around the vampire twins swirls
around them. As their forms begin to disappear along with the magic, a pair of amethyst eyes locks with the
eyes of the hunter’s.
Kamui thinks he sees Fuuma smile. Genuinely now.
The magic circle disappears, taking the vampire twins with it.
*
“Soul stones?”
Watanuki nods, studying the pair of stones recently delivered to him. “They guide those who are meant to
meet. Their source of power is the person’s desire to meet his or her most treasured ones.”
Mokona peers at Watanuki thoughtfully. “Is that why you kept the vampire twins there for so long? So Kamui
and Fuuma could meet?”
The magician studies the stones once more. There is a small smile on his face.
“Who knows?”
*
“Would you pay the price for the sake of your feelings?”
“The very same way you would.”

The Pattern They Follow

  • 1. Smiles (And the meanings they hold)
  • 2. ~They have a pattern, the two of them.~ Kamui growls from where he stands, stance defensive and claws extended. Somewhere behind him, Subaru shifts uneasily on his feet, his expression worried. Fuuma stands in front of them, a smile ever so present on his face. “Hello, Kamui, Subaru-san,” he says. “Long time no see.” “Leave,” is the first thing that Kamui says; his voice low and dangerous. His violet eyes turn to molten gold and his lips are curled into a snarl. Fuuma merely smiles like he usually does. He shakes his head and this only aggravates Kamui further. “Sorry, but I can’t. I’m here on a job.” He glances behind Kamui and gives Subaru a cheerful wave. “How are you, Subaru-san?” Subaru looks unsure on whether to answer the man or not. He bites his lip and manages a nod. “I’m doing well,” he allows. “Glad to hear it.” Kamui bristles as he watches the two of them talk, growing restless by the moment. He steps closer to Subaru and grips his hand. “We have to leave,” he tells him. “Kamui, we just arrived here. If we travel again right away, our strength will be affected,” Subaru points out gently. Kamui growls low in his throat, hating the fact that his twin is right. If they do cross dimensions now, they will end up drained the moment they land in the next world. And with danger constantly on their tail, he knows that it is not ideal. Fuuma remains cheerful, his smile ever so bright.Kamui wishes that he could rip it off his face. So instead, he snarls and narrows his eyes, his posture never relaxing. “Now, there’s no need to get snippy,” says Fuuma. “If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, you can always stay with me for the time being,” he offers. “There is no-“Kamui begins but Subaru beats him to it. “Thank you, Fuuma-san. That would be great.” Kamui gives his twin a disbelieving look. “Subaru!” he protests. “He is that hunter’s brother!” “Fuuma-san is not Seishirou-san,” Subaru reminds him in a coaxing tone. “He is not a threat to us.” “He might report back to his brother about our whereabouts,”Kamui insists. “You seem to really think highly of my relationship with Seishirou-nii-san,”Fuuma chirps, waving his hand dismissively. “He won’t know. We hardly meet anyway.”
  • 3. Kamui’s eyes remains wary and narrowed. He growls again, not bothering to hide his mistrust towards the hunter. Fuuma does not seem to notice. Or he pretends not to notice. “Well, you heard him,” he smiles. “Come on, it’s this way.” Much to his dismay, Kamui sees that Subaru does not hesitate and follows the man, giving Kamui an apologetic look as he does. Fuuma gives him a grin and a thumbs up. Kamui hisses angrily in return. * ~The pattern is unbroken and repetitive.~ “I don’t trust him,” Kamui says grouchily from where he sits. Subaru smiles tiredly. “I know, Kamui, I know.” He looks around the small room. It is sparse with a dresser and a single bed as its only furniture. Across them, Fuuma fiddles with some kind of a device, politely ignoring the fact that they are talking about him. “It’s only for a little while,” Subaru adds, hoping to appease his twin. “Only temporary.” Kamui crosses his arms and looks away. He thinks he sees Fuuma smile as he does so. That bastard. He always smiles. Subaru sighs. He turns to Fuuma. “What are you doing, Fuuma-san?” he asks finally, looking at the device in the man’s hands with an expression akin to curiosity. Fuuma looks up from it and addresses Subaru with another smile. It would seem that smiling is the only thing the man ever does and Kamui notes this with irritation. “Just inspecting the gadget that Watanuki-kun gave me,” Fuuma answers. “He said that this would help me in my search.” Subaru tilts his head. Fuuma now knows what his brother means when he mentions how adorable Subaru is. “Watanuki-kun?” Fuuma nods. “Yuuko-san is no longer here,” he says in a slightly subdued tone. Kamui turns to the hunter and notices that his smile slips slightly at the mention of the witch’s name. “So, Watanuki-kun took over the shop. You remember him, right?” Fuuma’s voice slips back into its cheerful tone so fast that Kamui nearly thinks that he has imagined the sadness in Fuuma’s voice. Subaru says nothing for a good minute. His green eyes look down to the floor. “…Oh.” “Anyway,” Fuuma continues. “My new boss has requested a special item and here I am.” “Just what are you looking for anyway?” Kamui asks in irritation. “No idea.” Kamui blinks. “You have no idea of what you’re looking for.”
  • 4. Fuuma grins and shakes his head. “None at all.” “Then how would you know how to find it?” Kamui does not bother hiding his exasperation. Fuuma simply holds up the device in his hand. “Watanuki-kun says that this thing would blink repeatedly whenever I’m near the object. I quote ‘You will know what it is when you find it,’” he laughs. “He really sounds like Yuuko-san, does he?” His tone is fond. “I hope you find it soon,” says Kamui. “Thanks for the good luck,” comes the happy reply. Kamui glares. “Do not misunderstand. The faster you find it, the faster you can leave.” “And you’ll continue to stay here?” Fuuma feigns surprise. “What if I report back to my dearest older brother about your whereabouts?” Kamui growls, his claws extending and his eyes burning gold. Fuuma smiles, like he always does. Subaru sighs. * ~They do not know how it started but it did~ Kamui watches Subaru sleep, his own eyes steadily drooping. He bites the inside of his cheek hard and welcomes the pain that shoots through him. He cannot afford to let his guard down. Not here. Not now. The darkened room is quiet. The fan spins above them with a soft whirl. Fuuma is out, still wandering around the city trying to find whatever it is that he needs to find. Kamui allows himself to sigh. He hopes that they could move soon. Travelling across dimensions repeatedly takes a lot of their strength and Kamui could still feel the fatigue within him, preventing him from using the magic to cross dimensions. He growls in irritation at this fact. The door opens and Kamui instantly stiffens, hugging his slumbering twin protectively against his chest. He sees a figure stumbling into the room and a familiar scent hits him hard. The scent of blood. “Ah, Kamui.” Fuuma. “What the hell happened to you?” Kamui narrows his eyes at the sight of the long gash on Fuuma’s forehead and the blood soaking his shirt. Subaru shifts in his sleep, reacting instinctively towards the scent of the blood, but he does not stir. At times like these, Kamui is glad for the fact that Subaru is a deep sleeper.
  • 5. “Got attacked,” Fuuma rasps. “Ran into some old company but don’t worry, I handled them just-,” Fuuma pauses when he notices Kamui staring at him. Or rather, the wound on his forehead. In the darkness of the room, Kamui’s gold eyes shine brightly. “Kamui…are you thirsty?” Fuuma asks, despite knowing the obvious answer. Kamui denies it, regardless. He turns his head away and glares stonily at the wall. “I’m not.” “I would be very grouchy too if I were to miss my meals several times in a row.” Fuuma’s tone is almost comforting. Kamui’s only response is a heated glare sent at his direction. Fuuma, being Fuuma, returns with a cheerful smile. Subaru continues to sleep. * ~And like every other pattern, there is a loop point~ It has been three days and Kamui is beginning to suspect something. Every night, without fail, Fuuma always returns with some sort of an injury. A scratch on the arm, a cut above his eyebrow, a split on his lips. He always returns with blood flowing freely out of his veins. Kamui is beginning to suspect that he does so on purpose. The hunter makes excuses, of course, saying that he tripped, fell or got attacked. But Kamui’s suspicion grows when Fuuma never fails to make a light comment about his injury, relating it to Kamui’s (and sometimes, Subaru’s) growing thirst. “Such a waste, isn’t it?” “I should really be more careful, shouldn’t I?” “I’m rather hungry. Are you?” Even Subaru is getting concerned, but his concern is purely on Fuuma’s well-being, not his seemingly offer to be drained dry by a literally bloodthirsty purebred vampire. “Are you sure you’ll be fine this time, Fuuma- san?” Subaru asks one evening on their sixth day. Fuuma is about to leave yet again, still on the search for the unknown object. Fuuma nods. “I’ll be fine. I’ll be more careful this time, I promise.” “If you end up injured again, I swear I’ll kill you right there and then,” Kamui threatens from somewhere in the corner of the room. “Kamui,” Subaru chastises. Fuuma simply waves his hand dismissively, chuckling. “At least I know Kamui cares.” His parting gift is Kamui’s murderous glare at the back of his head.
  • 6. Fuuma returns, much to Kamui’s growing irritation and annoyance, with yet another injury. This time it is a deep cut. Directly on the neck. It is bleeding pretty heavily, too. Kamui has had enough. He is lucky that Subaru is out scouting the area. Or else, he is not quite sure what Subaru would think of his next action. “Sorry…got involved in a nasty acc-,” Fuuma’s sentence is cut off when Kamui slams him against the wall and pulls his head closer. Fuuma has barely any time to blink or catch his breath when he feels a warm breath ghosting against the skin of his neck. It is followed by a sharp sting. Fuuma begins to feel dizzy. He grips Kamui’s shoulders tightly, trying to block out the numbing pain on his neck. He asks for this after all. Kamui takes his time drinking Fuuma’s blood. He does it, at first, out of pure spite. If the man wants to become a prey so badly, then so be it. But when Fuuma’s blood begins to flow into his mouth, his train of thought is abruptly interrupted. Maybe it is because of his thirst. Maybe it is due to the fact that he has practically been starving himself these past several days. But when the man’s blood touched his tongue, he suddenly feels as if he could not get enough of it. It is strangely intoxicating, in a way that most humans’ blood are not. It makes him feel almost drunk. For the first time in a very long while, Kamui feels light-headed as he drinks. He feels Fuuma gripping his shoulder tighter than before and he knows he has hit the man’s limit. He may not like the man, but Kamui is not unnecessarily cruel. * ~There is sometimes a small change to the pattern, though~ “Kamui?” “Hm?” “…” “What is it, Subaru?” “…Why do you smell like Fuuma-san?”
  • 7. * ~The change becomes bigger and more obvious~ “You know, Yuuko-san once said something to me.” Ten days have passed and Kamui is beginning to grow restless. For some reason, the twins’ magic still refuses to work and Fuuma still has not found whatever he is finding. So they are still stuck together. Fast asleep and heavily sated (Kamui thinks it is the willing female donor that Subaru feeds on earlier, though the woman is, unfortunately, passed out at the moment), Subaru lies on his back, eyes closed and his breathing slow. Out of the two of them, Subaru sleeps more and thus more rested. Kamui is too wary to sleep and he is steadily growing grouchier with each passing day. Kamui says nothing to the hunter beside him. Fuuma is absently rubbing the wound on his neck, proof to Kamui’s recent feeding (Subaru remains unaware, or he pretends not to). “…” “She said that there is only one thing in the world that comes without a price.” “…and what would that be?” Kamui hates himself for his curiosity. Fuuma smiles, quiet and wistful. Different from his other smiles. “Feelings.” Kamui is quiet for a moment. “…I suppose she would know,” he allows. “It makes sense, though,” Fuuma replies, looking at the setting sun outside. “You love someone just because you do. There is no compensation for it.” They say nothing more for a while. Fuuma turns to him, tilting his head a bit. Kamui spares him a glance. “What?” The wistful smile returns to the hunter’s lips. “I wonder…if Kamui ever misses anyone.” Kamui’s eyes widen a bit at that. He blinks. He huffs and turns to look outside again, determined to ignore the hunter. Fuuma laughs. “I guess that’s a no.” “…What about you?” asks Kamui after a full minute, finally losing to his curiosity yet again. “Me?” “…” Fuuma seems to consider the question briefly before he turns to the outside view once more. Kamui thinks he sees something changing in Fuuma’s ever so benign expression.
  • 8. “I don’t miss anyone. Not when I know I can see that person again.” * ~Eventually, the pattern changes completely before the two of them realize it~ “Kamui…” “What is it, Subaru?” Subaru hesitates and turns to Fuuma. The hunter is fast asleep, his expression smooth. His hands are bandaged, recently bruised after he falls off a cliff. You must be tired,” Subaru pats Kamui’s shoulders comfortingly. “Please rest.” Kamui complies, albeit grudgingly. He stays in the room, occupying himself by staring outside. Subaru has asked him to rest, and usually he does so by sleeping, but Fuuma’s presence in the room has him on edge and he refuses to doze off if it means leaving him vulnerable. He hates feeling vulnerable. He hates the fact that the hunter can make him feel vulnerable. He glances at Fuuma briefly, studying the man’s sleeping face. Fuuma is breathing lightly and he looks so calm and peaceful. Like he has no worries at all. Kamui finds himself walking over to the man and kneeling beside him. He hesitates. His expression in unreadable when he ever so slowly reaches out to touch Fuuma’s cheek. It is soft and warm. He could feel the blood flowing underneath the skin. Kamui lets his hand rests there for a while. * ~Is it even a pattern anymore?~ Fuuma finds himself alone with Subaru on the sixteenth day. His device has been reacting and he is sure that he can finally find the object that Watanuki has requested. He wipes his forehead with a handkerchief and takes a long swig of his water bottle. Beside him, Subaru is quiet, like he usually is. “Kamui’s sleeping?” Fuuma breaks the silence.
  • 9. “I…sort of drugged him,” Subaru confesses, looking guilty. “He has not been sleeping properly…so, I put something in his food at dinner.” “Smart move,” Fuuma replies in an approving tone. “Though I’m a bit surprised that he did not notice the change in the scent.” “…I also wanted to talk to you alone, actually.” “Oh? What about?” Subaru shifts on his feet. “Kamui,” he answers simply. Fuuma continues to look at the vampire with a cheerful expression, as if it is frozen that way. “What about him?” “…” Subaru looks at Fuuma directly in his eyes, taking a deep breath before continuing. “I know…that Kamui have been feeding on you.” “Because you can smell me on him, right?” Fuuma guesses with a chuckle. “Also, the wounds are not so easy to hide, are they?” he adds, touching the bandages around his wrist. Subaru looks troubled for a moment before continuing. “This…is probably none of my business but…Fuuma- san, I…noticed…” he trails off. Fuuma notices another difference between the vampire twins. While Kamui has no problem stating his opinions, even if they are insults most of the time, Subaru seems to have trouble voicing his thoughts without fearing for the person’s reaction. “What is it?” Fuuma asks gently. Subaru hesitates again. “You once mentioned that feelings have no price, right?” “Ah, so you heard that.” “If feelings come with a price, would you pay yours?” Fuuma’s smile remains on his face. “Depends on who is it for.” Subaru frowns and his eyes look troubled again. “Fuuma-san…what if it is for Kamui?” The two of them stare at one another for one long moment. Fuuma remains smiling for a good minute before slowly, quietly, the smile softens at the edges before it disappears completely. “It would be the same, my answer I mean,” he says at last, his voice calm. “The same?” Subaru sounds confused. Fuuma gives him a withdrawn smile. “Would you pay your price for the sake of your feelings towards Seishirou-nii-san?” There is a drawn pause. Subaru seems to crumble from inside out, gripping his arms for support and looking down. “You know the answer,” he whispers.
  • 10. The hunter’s smile is wide. But it is sad. “Then you should know mine.” * ~The two of them are in a standstill, unsure of what to do~ When Fuuma returns alone to his apartment that night (Subaru needs to clear his thoughts and Fuuma could not blame him), holding the objects he found in his hand, he finds Kamui awake and waiting for him. They stare at one another. “So you found the object,” Kamui begins. Fuuma shrugs. “It would seem so.” “What is it?” “Some kind of a stone shaped like a heart. Two of them actually.” “One of them is brown.” “And the other is amethyst.” “…” “…” Kamui strides over and takes a hold of Fuuma’s bandaged wrist, rubbing his thumb over the white material of the bandage. Fuuma just lets him. “I heard you.” “Hm?” “The conversation between you and Subaru.” “Kamui, eavesdropping is terribly rude,” Fuuma teases. The hand on his wrist tightens in response. Kamui’s expression is unreadable. “I want to know your answer.” “Hm?” Kamui looks at Fuuma, then, his eyes oddly vulnerable in a not-so-vulnerable way, exposed with uncertainty yet hidden with a strange kind of confidence. Fuuma merely stares into those amethyst eyes, choosing not to break the silence this time. Kamui is the one who does, though. “Would you pay the price for the sake of your feelings?” Fuuma does not smile this time. He simply looks at Kamui with an incomprehensible expression. His eyes are, however, radiating with sadness. Funny, how the hunter chooses this very moment to expose his vulnerability in front of Kamui.
  • 11. He leans in and whispers something in Kamui’s ear. Kamui’s eyes darken and abruptly, he pulls Fuuma closer and leans in to kiss him. * ~One of them makes a move and the other one responds~ The room is quiet aside from the sound of crumpling sheets and shifting limbs. There is a sharp intake of breath and a soft moan before the room is quiet once more. Kamui kisses Fuuma, unwilling to tear his lips away from the hunter, fearing what he might say if he does. Fuuma intertwines his fingers with Kamui’s, holding him in place as he gives an involuntarily thrust when the vampire arches up against him. Cool fingers trail down Fuuma’s spine, tracing circles as they move. Their eyes meet. They do not say a word. Morning come and Kamui stays where he is briefly, simply staring at the ceiling. He looks at Fuuma, still sleeping beside him. He touches the hunter’s cheek. Fuuma wakes up then. He smiles, then. “Good morning, Kamui.” And it is heartbreaking. * ~A new pattern is formed and it begins once more~ “Have a safe journey,” Fuuma grins. Kamui and Subaru stand in the middle of the park, gripping each other’s hands. “Take good care of yourself, Fuuma-san,” says Subaru, always polite. “Of course.” Kamui says nothing to Fuuma. Fuuma says nothing to Kamui. The magic around the vampire twins swirls around them. As their forms begin to disappear along with the magic, a pair of amethyst eyes locks with the eyes of the hunter’s. Kamui thinks he sees Fuuma smile. Genuinely now. The magic circle disappears, taking the vampire twins with it. * “Soul stones?”
  • 12. Watanuki nods, studying the pair of stones recently delivered to him. “They guide those who are meant to meet. Their source of power is the person’s desire to meet his or her most treasured ones.” Mokona peers at Watanuki thoughtfully. “Is that why you kept the vampire twins there for so long? So Kamui and Fuuma could meet?” The magician studies the stones once more. There is a small smile on his face. “Who knows?” * “Would you pay the price for the sake of your feelings?” “The very same way you would.”
