“Allah” : Arabic proper noun; name for God, it refers
to the One and Only, the Unique Creator, Lord
Sustainer of the Universe, Who Alone is God – there is
none besides Allah.

No equivalent translation in non-Semitic language.



“Muhammad s.a.a.w.” : Arabic name meaning “the
Praised One”; he is the Chosen, Unlettered Prophet,
the servant and Messenger of Allah, the Awaited
Seal of Prophethood after whom there will be no
more prophet sent.


IIMAN ‘AMAL IHSAN
[Islam]
Belief Submission Best or
Faith Obedience Righteous
Conviction Practice Conduct
Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without Faith is
mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy.
Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with IHSAN
which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve Allah s.w.t.
Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his submission
to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).

THE SECOND ASPECT REQUIRED IN THE ATTESTATION TO
THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF ALLAH (TAU HEED)


“Do they seek for other than the Religion of Allah?―While all
creatures in the heavens and on earth have willing, or unwilling,
bowed to His Will (accepted Islam), and to Him shall they all be
brought back.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 83)


“Now then, for that (reason), call (them to the Faith), and
stand steadfast as thou art commanded nor follow thou
their vain desires; but say: "I believe in the Book which
Allah has sent down; and I am commanded to judge justly
between you. Allah is Our Lord and your Lord. For us (is
the responsibility for) Our deeds, and for you for your
deeds. There is no contention between us and you. Allah
will bring us together, and to Him is (Our) final goal.”
(Qur’an: ash-Shura: 42: 15)


The word “Islam” - literally means “surrender;
submission”. When added with the prefix “al” ( definite
article“the” - to denote a name) it refers to the essential traits of
this religion signifying an external manifestation of one’s inner
conviction, belief (iiman) towards “obedience to the will of
Allah”.

The true meaning of “believe” or “iiman” is :

“to be convinced in one’s heart/mind (Qolb);
and declare with one’s tongue,
and practice deeds in accordance with its pillars ”


So “how does one begin to submit to Allah’s will”?

This was succinctly enumerated by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.
in what is referred to as :

the Pillars of Islam
(Arkaan-ul-Islaam).


Islam is built upon Five (pillars):

[1] To bear witness that there is no god except
Allah, and that Muhammad is the
Messenger of Allah;

[2] And to establish the (Daily obligatory)
Swolah;

[3] And pay out the Zakah (tax on wealth);

[4] And to make pilgrimage (Hajj) to the
House) for those who has the means to
(do) it;

[5] And to Fast (daily) in Ramadhan.


MOST COMPASSIONATE,
MOST MERCIFUL

THE fourth PILLAR OF ISLAM IN PRACTICALIZING OBEDIENCE TO
THE MESSAGE OF THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF ALLAH (TAUHEED)


 In respecting the dominance of the followers, adherents of the
school of Fiqh of al-Mujtahid-mutlaq al-Imam Muhammad ibn Idris
ash-Shafi-’ie rhm.a. here in this region, the practices in this
manual / lesson on FIQH matters, shall subscribe and be in
conformity with this school of Islamic jurisprudence ( madzhab).
 Yet, we hold to a healthy respect and tolerance ( tasamuh) towards
other madzaahib and ikhtilaaf (differences of opinion) amongst
Islamic scholars.
 The dominant schools of Islamic jurisprudence generally accepted
are the, Ja’afari, Maliki, Hanafi, Shafi’e and Hanbali.


“... Pilgrimage to the House (Ka’abah)
for those who are able (can afford it).”
(Hadith narrated by Muslim)


 “An active striving to submit and obey the Will of Allah”

 “Teachings not mere rituals but must be viewed also as
program to develop us towards truly becoming people who
submit to Allah”
 We are to build our “Islam” on five Arkaan (pillars)

 One of the Arkaan is “To perform the Hajj to the House for
those who are able”

“Say : We believe in Allah, and in that which has been revealed
to us and in that which has been sent down on Abraham,
Ishmael, Isaac and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which was
given to Moses and Jesus and the prophets of their Lord; we
make no division between any of them, and to Him (Allah) we
surrender (as Muslims).”

(Qur’an : al-Baqarah : 2 : 135)

THE PROOF FROM BIBLICAL SOURCE ?

“After Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan,
Sara’i, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and
gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. And he went in to
her and she conceived ...”
(Genesis: 16: 3-4)


“If a man has two wives, the one he loved and the other he
disliked, and they have borne him children, both the loved and
the disliked, and if the first-born is hers that is disliked, then on
the day he assigns his possessions as an inheritance to his sons,
he may not treat his son of the loved as the first-born in
preference to the son of the disliked, who is the first-born, but
he shall acknowledge the first-born, the son of the disliked, by
giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the first
issue of his strength; the right of the first-born is his.”

(Deuteronomy: 21: 15-17)


A Confirmation ?

‘When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under
the bushes. Then she went, and sat down over against him a
good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; while for she
said “Let me not look upon the death of the child.” And as she
sat over against him, the child lifted up his voice and wept. And
God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to
Hagar from heaven, and said to her: ……
(Genesis: 21: 14 )


A Confirmation ?

‘What troubles you Hagar?” Fear not; for God heard the voice of
the lad where he is. Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him fast with
your hand; for I will make him a great nation.” Then God
opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water * ; and she went,
and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink. And
God was with the lad, and he grew up …”
(Genesis: 21: 14-20 )

* This well is – “zam-zam” which still exist to this day, at the original
location of the House built by Abraham, as testimony to the truth of
Allah’s message.


From the founding of the well of “Zam-zam” in the valley
of Bakkah, it later grew to became known as Makkah to this day:


A Confirmation & Prophecy?

‘And God said to Abraham, ‘As for you, you shall keep my
covenant, you and your descendents after your throughout their
generations. This is my covenant which you shall keep, between
me and you and your descendents after you: Every male among
you shall be circumcised. You shall be circumcised by the flesh of
your foreskins, and it shall be as sign of the covenant between
me and you. * ”
(Genesis: 17: 9 )

* Who are the people who still practice this?


“Abraham was not a Jew nor yet a Christian, but he was true in
faith and bowed his will to Allah's (which is as a Muslim
following ‘al-Islam’) and he set not any as partners with Allah.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 67)


Prophet Abraham prayer for the coming of
Muhammad s.a.a.w. from his descendent.



“And remember that Abraham was tried by his Lord with certain
commands, which he fulfilled; He said: "I will make thee an
Imam to the nations." He pleaded: "And also (Imams) from my
offspring!" He answered: "But my promise is not within the
reach of evil-doers."

(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2:124)



"Our Lord! send amongst them a Messenger of their own
who shall rehearse Thy Signs to them and instruct them in
Scripture and Wisdom, and purify them; for Thou art the
Exalted in Might the Wise.“ (Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 129)



“And who turns away from the religion of Abraham but such as
debase their souls with folly? Him (Abraham) We chose and
rendered pure in this world: and he will be in the Hereafter in
the ranks of the Righteous.

Behold! His Lord said to him: "Submit (thy will to Me)" He said:
"I bow (my will) to the Lord and Cherisher of the universe.“

(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2:130-131)

“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but (he is) the
Messenger of Allah, and the Seal of the Prophets: and Allah has

“The parable of me and the other Prophets is similar to that of
a man who built a house and perfectly decorated it except
for a space of one brick. The people used to go round this
house, wonder and say, ‘why if only this missing brick were
put in?’

Thus, I am that brick and I am the Last of the Prophets.”

(Hadith agreed upon by Bukhary and Muslim)


Confirmation & Prophecy?
“Jesus said to them :

‘Have you never read in the scriptures:

“The stone the builders rejected has become the
capstone”;

The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.

Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away
from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit . He
who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom
it falls will be crushed.”

(Matthews: 21: 42-44)


Confirmation & Prophecy ?

‘And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying: “Read
this, I pray thee””: and he sayeth, “I am not learned.’ *

(Isaiah: 29: 12 )

* ‘And when Gabriel said to Muhammad: “IQRA’ (Read!)”
He (Muhammad replied:
“MAA ANA BI-QA-RI-IN (I am not one who can read)!”

“I will raise up for them a prophet like unto you (O Moses)
from amongst their brethren; and I will put My words in his
mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him .
And whoever will not give heed to My words which he shall
speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him.” *

(Deutronomy: 18: 18)



“He (Moses) said, “The Lord came from Sinai, and dawned
from Se’ir upon us; he shone forth from Paran, he came from
the ten thousands of holy ones, with flaming fire at his right
hand; Yea, he loved his people; all those who consecrated to
him were in his hand; so they followed in thy steps...”

(Deuteronomy: 33: 2)


“Jesus” a.s. is recorded to say:
“Think not that I have come to abolish the Law and the Prophets ;
I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I
say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a
dot, will pass away from the Law until all is accomplished.”

“Whosoever then relaxes one of the least of these
commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in
the kingdom of Heaven. But he who does them and teaches
them shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven.”

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceed that of the
scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of
Heaven.”


“Jesus is recorded to say:

“ I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
But when he, the Spirit of Truth, comes, he will guide you into
all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will only speak what
he hears, and he will tell you of what is yet to come. He will
bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it
known to you….”

(John: 16: 7-14)



“But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going
away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to
you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he
will convict the world of guilt in regard to the sin and
righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because
people do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness,
because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no
longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of
this world now stands condemned.”
(John: 16: 7-14)


“Jesus” a.s. is recorded to say:

‘By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from
thorn-bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree
bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree
cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown
into the fire.. Thus by their fruit you will recognize them.

Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ shall enter the kingdom
of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father * who is in
heaven”

(Matthew 7: 16-21 )
* Islam – “submission to the will of God .”


“The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at
Bakka (ancient name of Makkah): full of blessing and of
guidance for all kinds of beings:.”

(Qur’an : Aali ‘Imran: 3 : 96)

“In it are signs manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham;
whoever enters it attains security; pilgrimage thereto is a duty
men owe to Allah―those who can afford the journey; but if any
deny faith; Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures.”

"And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to
thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on
account of journeys through deep and distant mountain
highways. That they may witness the benefits (provided) for
them, and celebrate the name of Allah, through the Days
appointed over the cattle which He has provided for them (for
sacrifice): then eat ye thereof and feed the distressed ones in
want.”

(Qur’an : Hajj: 22 : 27-28)

“Then let them complete the rites prescribed for them, perform
their vows, and (again) circumambulate the Ancient House. Such
(is the Pilgrimage): whoever honours the sacred rites of Allah, for
him it is good in the sight of his Lord.”

(Qur’an : Hajj: 22 : 29)

“Allah hath appointed the Ka'bah, the Sacred House, a
standard for mankind, and the Sacred Month and the
offerings and the garlands. That is so that ye may know that
Allah knows whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is
in the earth, and that Allah is Knower of all things.

(Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 97)

“For Hajj are the months well known. If anyone undertakes that
duty therein let there be no obscenity nor wickedness nor
wrangling in the Hajj. And whatever good ye do (be sure) Allah
knows it.

And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best of
provisions is right conduct (TAQWA). So be conscious of (and
fear) Me, O ye that are wise.!”

(Qur’an : Baqarah: 2 : 197)

(Aisha r.a.) asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Is jihad incumbent upon
the women?” He replied: “Yes! Jihad which does not include fighting
(killing) is incumbent upon them : it is the Hajj and ‘Umrah”

“Whosoever performs Hajj (pilgrimage) and had refrained
from lewdness and sins, then he will return to become
sinless like the day his mother gave birth to him”

“An ‘Umrah is an expiation for sins committed between it and
the next, but an accepted Hajj (Hajjan mabrur) will receive no
less reward than Paradise.”

“Our Lord ! Let not our hearts swerve from the truth after You
have guided us; and bestow upon us the gift of Thy Grace
(Mercy): verily, You are the (true) giver of Gifts (bestowals).”

"Our Lord! Grant unto us spouses and offspring who will be the
comfort of our eyes and give us (the grace) to lead the
righteous."

“Our Lord! forgive us our sins blot out from us our
iniquities, and take to Thyself our souls in the company
of the righteous.”
