Backgammon clock settings survey 2015 v1 wjWayne Joseph
Every year or so, there is a big discussion about clock preferences and standards in the global backgammon community.
There discussions usually tend to flare up, plateau, fizzle out and then resurrect themselves every couple of years.
Here are the results of an experiment I did to gather opinions (using SurveyMonkey) in what I hope is a clearer and slightly more conclusive manner.
Reflective account by Jim Dale (ProgM Secretary)
Okay - let me be up-front and confess - this was my first ever webinar! Candidly the idea of passively sitting in front of a computer screen for an hour watching, PowerPoint slides and listening to a speaker drone on did not appeal to me. If it is unenticing for the listener what must it be like for the poor speaker with just a screen to interact with!
Heresy - I hear you shout – this is the age of social media, webinars are accessible to hundreds, indeed thousands, they don’t involve the cost and time of travelling, they allow busy people to get on with their days jobs blah blah. ‘Yes’ I know this but I was still not a webinar fan; that is until earlier today.
Firstly, I want to say a big thank you on behalf of the Committee to Nick Fewings, the Co-Director of TheColourWorks for delivering an interesting, interactive presentation, with passion and flare. Secondly, well done to the APM for hosting this event. Nick’s presentation was about conflict and dysfunction amongst a team of project professionals working in Saudi Arabia. From my experience you don’t have to go very far to find conflict in project teams, but I guess a Bedouin tent in the Arabian Desert is more glamorous than an office in a London Borough Local Authority!
Nick’s presentation was anything but a passive experience. He introduced a series of on-line voting experiences, which were simply brilliant. We were asked, for example, about the typical issues in projects and then asked to ‘vote’ electronically. At the same time a constant stream of useful suggestions, questions and comments were being logged and displayed on the ‘twitter’ stream.
Nick spelt out three common causes of project failure as weak leadership, inadequate resourcing and poor stakeholder engagement. The link is, of course, people. People will ultimately determine project success or failure. This may sound obvious but it is frequently forgotten as we strive to deliver projects focusing on PPM, methodology, systems and processes.
Another fact that Nick emphasized was that we all have different personalities that condition the way we learn and respond to change. Nick’s simple and visual colour-coding system, used in-conjunction with a further poll, reinforced this point.
Now the really neat thing about webinars is that they can easily be recorded and made available to all:
So what learning can I take from Nick’s thought provoking presentation?
1) We must invest time getting to know our teams and what makes them tick;
2) We need to understand why change is resisted and help people progress quickly through the change curve;
3) We need to invest in a range of different communication styles to engage effectively without stakeholders;
4) Take a hat with a built-in fan when visiting the Arabian Desert!
Nick’s presentation slides are made available below to assist sharing and for those with green / yellow tendencies can be further shared with others.

14 Jan 2020 UCL Project and Programme Community of Practice Lunch and Learn Session
Armed with (this) trusty Mentimeter slide deck, for maximum audience interaction; session into 3 parts.
#1 Explored what benefits and value mean in the context of a project delivery and the challenge of preventing value loss, where, when and how it happens in the vast majority of projects.
We recognised the limitations of project managers that, no matter how super-human they may be, they can destroy investment return(s) e.g. by allowing cost and schedule overrun but … they cannot create value if it was never there in the first place.
#2 Using Logitech Spotlight Presentation Remote (other clickers may be available) and adopting the persona of Jack Harkness, programme manager of a Hospital Care Enhancement Programme example, to focus in on some key features of Amplify™ Strategy Execution Management software (SEM) that support robust value-delivery including;
- business goals, target setting and dependency maps
- benefit, cost and schedule tracking
- stage-gate approvals and automated workflows
- dashboards and reporting
#3 Group exercise was designed to answer a couple of questions namely;
- What can you do to ensure that benefits are measurable and contribute to organization strategy?
- How could UCL improve the post-implementation/review and the lessons learned process.

PMI UK Benefits Management Framework Webinar - 24 Jan 2020Amplify-now
PMI UK Benefits Management Framework Webinar with Mentimeter Results
Every programme and portfolio now uses benefits management processes to demonstrate return on investment. However, benefits management isn’t applied consistently to all projects and programmes at all phase-gates, which means that decisions on what to increase/ decrease/ start/ stop are made without being able to make proper comparisons.
A benefits management framework delivers two things: 1) consistency, allowing better decisions and delivering more success, and 2) application of benefits management throughout the life cycle, from problem definition through to lessons learnt.
This webinar supports the APM publication “A guide to using a benefits management framework” and takes participants through the implementation process, from developing and refining the benefits management methodologies you will use, through which programmes to migrate when, to structuring portfolios, tranches and stage gates and taking action on deviation from plan.
Speaker - Hugo Minney
Hugo has worked in project management in many different settings but has probably never
once had the job title of ‘Project Manager.’
From ‘Account Manager’ (developing the specification and organising delivery and
implementation), through ‘Workforce Designer’ (creating new ways to overcome constraints),
‘Benefits Manager’ (coaching stakeholders what they can expect and what they have to do to
get it), to a recent role as ‘Chief Executive’ (responsible for making it happen), Hugo has
worked across industries in Commerce, in Charity and NHS.
Through all of this, Hugo has maintained a focus on value - the value that the user and the
customer get, and why they would want to get (or buy) more.
Hugo is a Chartered Project Professional and the Chair of the Benefits and Value Specific
Interest Group (SIG), as well as on the committees of Enabling Change SIG and North East
Branch. He’s a committee member of BSI (British Standards Institute) as subject matter expert
for a forthcoming benefits management standard.

Benchmarking for improved project performanceAmplify-now
Tim Podesta introduces the subject of Benchmarking and illustrates with professional and personal examples.
He describes how considered use of data:
- drives continuous improvement
- supports target setting
- enables sharing and learning across an organisation and with outside peers.
He explains how benchmarking can be applied to improve project performance.

EVA19, the long established Earned Value conference, has this year described its theme as looking at a project management ‘ABC’ – Agile, Benefits and Complex.
The four day event, which returns to the Armourers Hall, runs from the 19th to 22nd of May with the flagship conference being held on 20th and 21st May and workshops before and after.
The conference will look at how this ‘ABC’ can be made to work within a portfolio and how agile fits into major and minor projects. It will investigate how to manage the relationship between portfolio benefits and project budgets, and whether complex projects even exist.
Conference organiser and APM chairman, Steve Wake says:
“Currently there is little evidence that this ‘ABC’ is being effectively deployed and managed. This conference aims to address that concern through EVA’s trademark blend of learning and professional development. Case studies and unusual presentations, delivered by top-notch speakers and experienced practitioners, will again engage and entertain the audience.
We’ve used string quartets to illustrate points in the past and this year we will be using a Blues band for the first time.”
Speakers across the two days include many familiar faces from the APM events programme including; Adrian Pyne of the APM ProgM SIG ‘Changing the project wasteland with a portfolio culture that works,’ APM Honorary Fellow Tim Banfield Director at the Major Projects Authority and Stephen Jones, Sellafield and Planning Monitoring and Control Specific Interest Group (PMC SIG) and Carolyn Limbert of the APM PMC SIG to talk about agile, benefits and complex.
Peter Taylor, the Lazy Project Manager will be presenting on “The project manager who smiled” and the ever popular Stephen Carver will present the leadership lessons that can be learnt from Alfred the Great.
In addition, there will be speakers from AIRBUS, TfL, Bloodhound, Heathrow T2 and London Tideway Tunnels.
The conference will be supplemented by a number of workshops being held at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Bloomsbury Square on Monday 19th and Thursday 22nd May 2014.

In the Adani-Hindenburg case, what is SEBI investigating.pptxAdani case
Adani SEBI investigation revealed that the latter had sought information from five foreign jurisdictions concerning the holdings of the firm’s foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) in relation to the alleged violations of the MPS Regulations. Nevertheless, the economic interest of the twelve FPIs based in tax haven jurisdictions still needs to be determined. The Adani Group firms classed these FPIs as public shareholders. According to Hindenburg, FPIs were used to get around regulatory standards.
Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.
