The document discusses Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs for feral and stray cats. It describes how TNR programs work, where caregivers trap cats, have them spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and returned to their colony. The goals are to reduce suffering for existing cats and prevent future generations, while stabilizing colony sizes. It provides an example of the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon, a mobile spay/neuter program that has altered over 75,000 cats since 1995. TNR teaches compassion and responsible cat care as an alternative to trapping and killing.
The red imported fire ant is native to South America and was accidentally introduced to the United States through shipments. It has few natural predators in the US and its colonies can grow rapidly with hundreds of queens per mound, allowing colonies to produce thousands of eggs daily. Fire ant mounds can grow up to 2 feet high and 1 1/2 feet long, located in grassy areas, and they will aggressively sting and inject venom when threatened, causing a painful burning sensation.
The document provides tips for developing self-mastery through establishing daily habits and disciplines. Some of the key recommendations include: setting aside one hour each morning for personal development activities like meditation; laughing for five minutes in the mirror daily; spending Sundays with family; focusing on nature; fasting occasionally; drinking water; being content; spending time alone in introspection; taking chances and smart risks; developing strong character through honesty and humility; and serving others. The overall message is that establishing consistent habits is important for self-renewal and achieving higher levels of success.

Tommy Pickles spends his days immersed in a virtual reality world, forgetting about his real life responsibilities like school and his health. Over 10 years, Tommy becomes addicted to virtual reality and neglects his real life so much that by age 20 he is an unhealthy scruffy man with no social life outside of the virtual world. On his last day using virtual reality, Tommy returns home and kills himself, realizing too late that virtual reality provided an escape from real life that ultimately led to his demise.
Timmy Pickles spends his days immersed in a virtual reality world instead of living in the real one. He neglects school, his health deteriorates, and over 10 years he becomes an isolated, scruffy man with no life outside of VR. On his final day using the virtual reality machine, Timmy realizes it is no way to live and kills himself, having wasted his life in a virtual alternate reality instead of the real one. The story serves as a warning about the dangers of virtual reality and how it can be abused to the point of replacing real life.

Pandas live in dense bamboo forests in the mountains of southwestern China. There are only around 1,000 pandas remaining in the wild. Pandas eat almost exclusively bamboo, which accounts for 99% of their diet. Pandas are listed as endangered with only around 1,600 left in the wild and 160 living in zoos worldwide. Newborn panda cubs are very small, weighing only a few ounces and are helpless at birth, requiring significant effort from the mother to raise them.
The St. Louis Zoo was established in 1904 and has grown significantly over the years. It is now home to over 9,000 animals representing 800 species. Female pythons lay between 2-100 eggs which hatchlings emerge around 2 feet long, wrapping around the eggs to keep them warm as they develop.

2. Four-month-old lowland gorilla Tumaini learns to walk on July 18 at the Diane Fossey Gorilla Center in Goma, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Tumaini, which means hope in the Kiswili language, was rescued from poachers two months ago and arrived to the center in poor health. She and other gorillas are cared for by specialists trying to preserve the dwindling population of great apes in Congo.
3. A baby endangered Black Rhinoceros stays close to her mother, 6 1/2 year old Circe, as she makes her public debut on July 19 at the Metrozoo in Miami, Fla. The 91.6 pound calf was born July 15 after an approximately 15-month gestation period. She is Circe's first baby.
4. Pinky and Perky, a pair of 4-week-old miniature piglets at England's Pennywell Farm and Wildlife Center, keep cool with a huge lolly packed with carrots and other vegetables. The recent heat wave has been exhausting for everyone and animals are no exception, said Catherine Tozer, assistant manager of the farm. All the animals have been struggling with the heat so we have just tried to do everything we can to make them more comfortable. After the initial shock and a bit of investigation, the ice lollies went down a real treat, she said.
6. A female monkey named Loona drinks to cool off during a heat wave on July 23, in Lyon, France. In parts of the country, temperatures neared 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
7. A British dog licks an ice-cream cone during the heat wave.
8. Children look on as a beached baby humpback whale, believed to be only a day old lays beached on Cabarita Beach, northern New South Wales, on July 18. The whale, separated from its mother, beached itself late the day before. The calf was put down via leathal injection by Sea World staff after attempts to locate its mother off-shore failed.
9. Flamingos feed in the lagoon of Fuente de Piedra, near Malaga, southern Spain.
10. A giant panda rests on a tree stump in a giant panda research center in Wolong, southwest China's Sichuan province.
11. A polar bear blows bubbles as he rests in a pond on at the Cleveland MetroParks Zoo.
12. Pygmy hippopotamuses 'Thug', left, and 'Nicky' line up to have their teeth cleaned with a new giant toothbrush at the London Zoo. The hippos' teeth are regularly cleaned by zoo keepers as part of their care routine and until now a broom for each hippo has done the job perfectly. This summer keepers decided the brooms just weren't snazzy enough for the hippos and ordered two giant 5-foot toothbrushes for the pair, a pink one for Thug and a blue one for Nicky.
13. A pig clings to a wall at a flooded farm in Huizhou, south China's Guangdong province. Rainstorms and flooding across China were triggered by the severe tropical storm Bilis, Xinhua News Agency reported.
