John continues to explain how he studied over 160 health care
organizations in 16 countries and has seen successful
“organizations that suggest a framework for the new
management approach in health care.”
He goes on to provide ideas an examples on how to improve
management systems. For example, he explains how each
executive and manager preserves a list of skills, abilities and
knowledge required to be effective at their level
For example, if one of the managers had a task to do then
he/she would have to do it and she is responsible for anything
that happens or comes her way, not the manager.

Human Resources Approach
The Human Resources Approach focuses on contributions of
human relations approach within organizations; for example,
focusing on the individuals feels in the organization and
recognizing that individual labor is important for meeting
organizational goals.
This approach relates to the article and the healthcare work
place because it is need to be used in order for success.

Human Resource Approach applies to this article and
organization because their communication content, direction,
channel and style needs to be like the HRA. For example, their
content needs to be task and social as in they will communicate
often with each other and their work is task based. Next, their
direction needs to be team based, therefore they need to work
together when needed and gather ideas as a team to come up
with new knowledge solutions
10. +
Their communication channel needs to be using all channels
but mainly face to face therefore they can be understood
correctly without misunderstanding any idea. They need to
communicate as much as possible in order to make sure
everything is running efficient and face to face communication
is best for this type of organization. Finally, their style needs to
be both formal and informal but mainly informal because it can
move freely. It is more efficient because employees can discuss
work related problems which saves time.

How this article relates to the
Human Resource Approach
In the article, it describes how each individual has a different
level of management and they focus on their own standard of
work. For example, it was mentioned that middle managers will
have their own task to do while the workers on the surgical floor
have their own tasks to do but there is still communication
through status sheets so in a way everyone is on the same
path. So, for instance, the nurse and manager are on the same
page when dealing with a patient through these status sheets.

Then after that, the head manager meets with their team to
solve any problems or answer any questions. Also, the
manager works on the improvement of activities before meeting
with their own supervisor to improve on anything or update any
of the activities.
This all relates to the Human Resources Approach because
their direction is team based and working together to keep their
work place organized. Also, their channel is usually written but
mainly face to face when meeting with managers and solving
any issues or problems.

Peters and Waterman’s Themes for
Excellent Organizations
Moving along, Peters and Waterman had eight principles of
excellence. These principles were to identify aspects of
organizational culture that were important in high preforming
companies. These themes emphasize the importance of
people.
These themes relate to this article in many ways. For example,
their organization is hands-on and value driven because the
employees and managers all share the same value of
performance; their goal is to put the patients first always and do
everything possible to help the patient. Their tasks is very
hands-on especially working at a hospital ans being in that
environment

Also, they preform close relations to the customer meaning
they have excellent decisions and actions that meets the needs
of customers. Within hospitals, their main focus and goal is the
patients or customers coming into their hospital or workplace.
They have a good way of meeting the needs of customers. For
example, in this article they focus on patient value and what will
deliver better patient value; one way that they suggested is to
reduce the number of days that children wait for appointments,
tests, etc.
15. +
Another way that the themes relate to this article is through
autonomy and entrepreneurship but this is the part of theme
that hospitals need to improve in. This theme focuses on how
organizations encourages employees to take risks in the
development of new ideas but in this article they tend to lack
that. They need to improve on encouraging employees like
nurses and managers to take more risks therefore new and
improved ideas will be brought to the table.

Finally, productivity through people is another excellent theme
that is used in this organization and needs more improvement
in order to have a successful organization. This theme focuses
on encouraging positive and respectful relationships among
management and employees. During their meetings they
promote positive relationships within each other and everyone
is treated fairly and equally. However, they need to improve on
this a bit more because this will allow for success if there is
positive vibes through out the work place and in their
environment and respect is always needed in order for an
organization to run.
17. +
Overall, Peters and Waterman’s themes for excellent
organization applies to this article and hospitals as a whole.
Looking at these themes allows one to see how they can
improve together as a whole. These themes are very important
and helpful for an organization to be successful and run
smoothly. For future solutions, organizations can use these
themes and apply them to their workplace.
