Running head: Week Five Reflection
Week Five Reflection By: Kaylee Shiveley
Abstract
Organizational Behavior is made up of many components, down
to the moods, personalities, and communication of an employee.
Knowing about how businesses utilizes communication within
and leadership will allow the business to reach their goals.
Week Two Reflection
Organizational Behavior is based around multiple concepts,
including knowing how to effectively communicate and the
affects of leadership in the workplace. .
What’s The Most Worthy? In chapters eleven and twelve we
learned communication and leadership. I believe both of these
chapters cover extremely important information since
businesses rely heavily on good communication and leadership
skills. The most worthy of these I believe is leadership.
Although communication is just as important, communication
can be taught with the right leadership. Leadership in the
workplace is one thing; good leadership in the workplace is
another. Some benefits of a good leader can include “improved
productivity of the workforce, improved ability to succeed
under pressure, increased emotional intelligence, improved
charisma and seriousness in business operations, growth in
confidence in your tem, improved listening and communication
skills, increased awareness of diversity in the workforce,
improved innovation and creativeness, and a dependable,
reliable, competent workforce”
(www.rapidboostmarketing.com). With these leadership
highlights comes effective communication. Communication is
hit on within these leadership goals as well as many other
important aspects of a successful business. The Importance of
Communication and Leadership Communication and leadership
are both important concepts in life alone. Having these skills in
the workplace can help with both internal and external factors.
Internally, having a good leadership team to teach new
employees can help set the expectations for the company. If
managers focus on instilling leadership qualities into their
employees, the employees will naturally work with a leadership
mind set. If everyone in the company is trained this way, the
business will reap the benefits externally. If the outsiders of the
business can physically see that company doing well, making
improvements, and focusing on the future of their business, they
are more likely to choose them as a place to give their business
to.
How Leadership is used in Society and / or Business
Leadership is something can be instilled into someone at a very
young age. Although it may be difficult to see leadership
qualities in young children, its noticeable if it’s looked for.
Leadership is important in many aspects of life including
academics, sports, music, and even your personal life. In
school, kids can be leaders for other people their own age.
Whether there is group work for a project or a group game at
recess, having someone to keep everyone in check and take over
and, more or less, be the “boss” of the group can be beneficial
to keep structure and organization. In sports, majority of teams
have a team captain. If any issues arise or something needs
taken care of, other players can approach the captain before the
coach and if it is something that needs resolved with the coach
then the captain can do that versus having 10 people trying to
tell one person about an issue. In everyday personal life, most
of us have an adult-figure that we look up to. Someone, at some
point in time, set rules for you growing up, helped you on
school projects, gave you advice, etc and exposes some of those
leadership qualities at a young age. Typically, parents or
grandparents or someone within the family is that person who
qualifies as the “leader” and person kids can look up to.
Conclusion
Communication and leadership go hand-in-hand, and as
long as leadership is instilled in one, communication follows
and will flow.

Mile Stone 1 Feedback!
Topic: Nursing Shortage and the Need for More Nurses
Organization
Great job detailing the organization that will be the setting of
your milestone assignments. I appreciated the professional
insight you added into the characteristics that are of importance
in regard to your topic choice, especially it’s values!
Improvement Opportunity:
Great job detailing where your organization could improve,
specifically regarding the nursing shortage and patient safety.
You also addressed that your institution is in good financial
standing so should address the issue. Additionally, I would have
liked to see you detail what financial considerations there would
be if they don't! What financial impact can all of the negative
consequences of nursing shortage cause on your institution?
Purpose:
I would have liked a little more insight here – How exactly is
your proposal going to help improve patient safety?
Proposal Initiative
So what if your organization's benefits are better then
surrounding competitors? What then will you change?
Determining if a change is necessary would have been more the
prep for this assignment - determining that an
adjustment/improvement is NEEDED and suggesting that
change would then be your proposed initiative.
Running head: NURSING SHORTAGE
1
NURSING SHORTAGE 4
Nursing Shortage and the Need for More Nurses
Organization
Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home is located in Manhattan
New York and it offers short term rehabilitation and residential
skilled nursing. The short term rehabilitation is aimed at
speeding the recovery and improves the transition of individuals
from hospital to home after undergoing an intensive disease or
surgery. The organization mainly serves the upper East Side of
Manhattan and has been in existence for more than sixty years.
The organization has a religious order in approaching various
issues including caring for the elderly. It takes care of all
people regardless of their faith in an environment that can
rarely be found in the traditional nursing facilities. The mission
of the organization is to offer holistic care to every resident in
an environment of Christian understanding and faith. It bases it
values and ethics on the teachings of the Roman Catholic
Church. All the activities that the organization conducts are
aimed at portraying respect for life through love and
compassion. It offers residential skilled nursing care for
patients that require 24-hour care with a singular mission of
helping all patients and improving patient outcomes. The
organization has maintained a great reputation over the years
for the quality patient care it provides.
Improvement opportunity
The organization receives very many patients each and every
day and it does not have enough nurses to take care of the high
number of patients. The availability of enough nurses is a
quality patient indicator. Due to the nursing shortage, the
available nurses work for very long hours which leads to fatigue
and job dissatisfaction. Nurses in the facility are also more
prone to making medical errors and mistakes (Steege, 2017).
They do not spend enough time with patients in order to create
meaningful nurse-patient relationships which are very important
in improving patient outcomes. Patient quality has been greatly
compromised due to the shortage of nurses in the health facility.
Other effects of the nursing shortage include overcrowding in
emergency rooms, increased mortality rate and increased
turnover among the nurses. Some of the nurses have quit the
organization because of the extensive duties laid on them as a
result of not having adequate nurses. The organization is
majorly funded by the Catholic church and it at times gets
federal grants. It is in a great financial state therefore it should
address the nurses’ shortage issue in order to optimize patient
safety. For it to achieve this, all the stakeholders within the
organization must be involved. Patient safety is based on
adequate and efficient care which is majorly provided by
nurses. Without enough nurses, the safety of patients in the
organization is in jeopardy.
Purpose
The purpose of this proposal is to outline the measures the
organization can take to address the nursing shortage problem.
The proposal suggests that the organization should focus on the
wages and benefits of the nurses in order to attract more nurses
and retain the existing ones. Just like any other professional,
nurses are always looking for organizations that greatly value
them and offer better wages and salaries. Adjusting the current
compensation and benefits package for the nurses is the best
way to address the nursing shortage in both the short and long
term.
Proposal initiative
My initiative entails evaluating current compensation and
benefits package for nurses and determining whether it levels
with that of other organizations or whether it is better. The only
way the organization will be able to attract new nurses and
retain the current ones is by offering a package that is better
than those ones of other organizations in the region (Snavely,
2016). The first step in this initiative is conducting research in
various institutions in the region and country wide to see the
packages they offer their nurses. The next step is comparing the
package the organization offers with the other packages
investigated. The final step is making adjustments and
improving the package to ensure it is very competitive not only
on the regional but also on the national level. Through this, the
organization will be able to attract more nurses regionally and
nationally.
Leadership
The management is responsible of ensuring that the organization
provides optimal patient care therefore it must address the
nursing shortage problem. The management has tried to address
the issue by advertising the nurses’ positions but there are
minimal applicants therefore it must do something to increase
the pool of applicants. The most effective way to do this is to
offer a very competitive compensation and benefits package that
individuals can hardly resist. Leadership is very important in
ensuring this initiative is successfully adopted. Firstly, the
management should come up with a team to investigate the
compensation and benefits packages that other organizations
regionally and nationally offer. The management should offer
all the resources required to conduct the investigation
nationally. The results from this investigation should be utilized
in developing a competitive package that will ensure the current
nurses have no reason to leave the organization and increase the
pool of applicants. By improving the compensation and benefits
package, the organization will be able to attract and retain
nurses therefore addressing the nursing shortage in both the
short and long run.

WEEK 5 PRACTICAL CONNECTION
Week 5 Practical Connection Post
Brooke Caminita
University of the Cumberlands
Week 5 Practical Connection
This week’s focus was on chapters 11 and 12, Communication
and Leadership, respectively. Communication is transmitting
information from one person to another in order to be on the
same page. Robbins and Judge (2018) explain, if there was a
such thing as “perfect communication,” then “a thought would
be transmitted so the receiver understood the same mental
picture the sender intended” (p. 171). Unfortunately, we do not
live in a perfect world so there are barriers in communication,
such as: filtering, selective perception, information overload,
emotions, language, silence, communication apprehension, and
lying (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 180-182). To provide an
example, language would be the different meaning of words due
to personality or age. Understanding the direction of
communication is important, as there are several types involved:
downward, upward, and lateral. Chapter 11 also goes into detail
about the modes of communication and what type of situation is
appropriate for each. The modes include, oral, written, and non-
verbal. For example, written communication would be best for
the transfer of “complex and lengthy” information (Robbins &
Judge, 2018, p. 177).
Going into detail about chapter 12, Leadership, several
factors and concepts play a part. Several theories are mentioned,
in particular behavioral theories of leadership stood out most to
me. It means that people can be trained to become leaders,
through education and experience. I’m sure there are several
instances in which an individual who is now a leader, was not
before and lacked several leadership qualities. I believe the
qualities can be learned through education and then applied to
the workplace and projects. Another thing I found to be a major
part of this chapter is on trust. Trust is needed as a leader or
follower, and has been proven to increase participation, make
employees more involved and motivated, and provide better
performance (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 201).
Putting all the mentioned knowledge and concepts into
practice, I first think of how learning the different modes of
communication will be beneficial in my workplace. For
example, we do surprise birthday celebrations for each
employee and in order to inform everyone without spoiling the
surprise or forgetting anyone it is best to use a premade email
list and remove the employee the surprise is for. The premade
email list is for the employees in my business unit and is very
beneficial because it ensures no one is forgotten, and also saves
a large amount of time when creating emails that everyone
should receive. In addition, I believe I have not always been a
natural leader, but by taking this class and learning all the
concepts and acquiring beneficial knowledge, I feel like my
leadership skills have improved and I will continue to show this
in projects and in the workplace. When I get into a managerial
position, I will motivate my employees with this knowledge of
leadership skills and practices because I believe it can all be
learned if they are willing. Creating a workplace with excellent
communication and leadership skills is a major thing, and
unfortunately some workplaces lack this due to lack of
education. I hope to encourage adding this kind of information
into recruiting and orientation when employees are first hired so
they begin their career with the necessary information to
succeed. To reiterate, a lot of employees may not have taken a
class like organizational behavior, therefore informing them of
concepts like these is important and they will probably find it
very interesting. My final thought for this assignment is to post
weekly concepts on the community board at work. A short, fun,
encouraging, and informational statement can go a long way.

Running head Week Five Reflection Week Five R.docx

  • 1. Running head: Week Five Reflection Week Five Reflection By: Kaylee Shiveley Abstract Organizational Behavior is made up of many components, down to the moods, personalities, and communication of an employee. Knowing about how businesses utilizes communication within and leadership will allow the business to reach their goals. Week Two Reflection Organizational Behavior is based around multiple concepts, including knowing how to effectively communicate and the affects of leadership in the workplace. . What’s The Most Worthy? In chapters eleven and twelve we learned communication and leadership. I believe both of these chapters cover extremely important information since businesses rely heavily on good communication and leadership skills. The most worthy of these I believe is leadership. Although communication is just as important, communication can be taught with the right leadership. Leadership in the workplace is one thing; good leadership in the workplace is another. Some benefits of a good leader can include “improved productivity of the workforce, improved ability to succeed under pressure, increased emotional intelligence, improved charisma and seriousness in business operations, growth in confidence in your tem, improved listening and communication skills, increased awareness of diversity in the workforce,
  • 2. improved innovation and creativeness, and a dependable, reliable, competent workforce” (www.rapidboostmarketing.com). With these leadership highlights comes effective communication. Communication is hit on within these leadership goals as well as many other important aspects of a successful business. The Importance of Communication and Leadership Communication and leadership are both important concepts in life alone. Having these skills in the workplace can help with both internal and external factors. Internally, having a good leadership team to teach new employees can help set the expectations for the company. If managers focus on instilling leadership qualities into their employees, the employees will naturally work with a leadership mind set. If everyone in the company is trained this way, the business will reap the benefits externally. If the outsiders of the business can physically see that company doing well, making improvements, and focusing on the future of their business, they are more likely to choose them as a place to give their business to. How Leadership is used in Society and / or Business Leadership is something can be instilled into someone at a very young age. Although it may be difficult to see leadership qualities in young children, its noticeable if it’s looked for. Leadership is important in many aspects of life including academics, sports, music, and even your personal life. In school, kids can be leaders for other people their own age. Whether there is group work for a project or a group game at recess, having someone to keep everyone in check and take over and, more or less, be the “boss” of the group can be beneficial to keep structure and organization. In sports, majority of teams have a team captain. If any issues arise or something needs taken care of, other players can approach the captain before the coach and if it is something that needs resolved with the coach then the captain can do that versus having 10 people trying to tell one person about an issue. In everyday personal life, most of us have an adult-figure that we look up to. Someone, at some
  • 3. point in time, set rules for you growing up, helped you on school projects, gave you advice, etc and exposes some of those leadership qualities at a young age. Typically, parents or grandparents or someone within the family is that person who qualifies as the “leader” and person kids can look up to. Conclusion Communication and leadership go hand-in-hand, and as long as leadership is instilled in one, communication follows and will flow. References Robbins, S. & Judge T. (2018). Topic: Nursing Shortage and the Need for More Nurses Organization Great job detailing the organization that will be the setting of your milestone assignments. I appreciated the professional insight you added into the characteristics that are of importance in regard to your topic choice, especially it’s values! Improvement Opportunity: Great job detailing where your organization could improve,
  • 4. specifically regarding the nursing shortage and patient safety. You also addressed that your institution is in good financial standing so should address the issue. Additionally, I would have liked to see you detail what financial considerations there would be if they don't! What financial impact can all of the negative consequences of nursing shortage cause on your institution? Purpose: I would have liked a little more insight here – How exactly is your proposal going to help improve patient safety? Proposal Initiative So what if your organization's benefits are better then surrounding competitors? What then will you change? Determining if a change is necessary would have been more the prep for this assignment - determining that an adjustment/improvement is NEEDED and suggesting that change would then be your proposed initiative. Running head: NURSING SHORTAGE 1 NURSING SHORTAGE 4 Nursing Shortage and the Need for More Nurses Organization Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home is located in Manhattan New York and it offers short term rehabilitation and residential skilled nursing. The short term rehabilitation is aimed at speeding the recovery and improves the transition of individuals from hospital to home after undergoing an intensive disease or surgery. The organization mainly serves the upper East Side of
  • 5. Manhattan and has been in existence for more than sixty years. The organization has a religious order in approaching various issues including caring for the elderly. It takes care of all people regardless of their faith in an environment that can rarely be found in the traditional nursing facilities. The mission of the organization is to offer holistic care to every resident in an environment of Christian understanding and faith. It bases it values and ethics on the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. All the activities that the organization conducts are aimed at portraying respect for life through love and compassion. It offers residential skilled nursing care for patients that require 24-hour care with a singular mission of helping all patients and improving patient outcomes. The organization has maintained a great reputation over the years for the quality patient care it provides. Improvement opportunity The organization receives very many patients each and every day and it does not have enough nurses to take care of the high number of patients. The availability of enough nurses is a quality patient indicator. Due to the nursing shortage, the available nurses work for very long hours which leads to fatigue and job dissatisfaction. Nurses in the facility are also more prone to making medical errors and mistakes (Steege, 2017). They do not spend enough time with patients in order to create meaningful nurse-patient relationships which are very important in improving patient outcomes. Patient quality has been greatly compromised due to the shortage of nurses in the health facility. Other effects of the nursing shortage include overcrowding in emergency rooms, increased mortality rate and increased turnover among the nurses. Some of the nurses have quit the organization because of the extensive duties laid on them as a result of not having adequate nurses. The organization is majorly funded by the Catholic church and it at times gets federal grants. It is in a great financial state therefore it should address the nurses’ shortage issue in order to optimize patient safety. For it to achieve this, all the stakeholders within the
  • 6. organization must be involved. Patient safety is based on adequate and efficient care which is majorly provided by nurses. Without enough nurses, the safety of patients in the organization is in jeopardy. Purpose The purpose of this proposal is to outline the measures the organization can take to address the nursing shortage problem. The proposal suggests that the organization should focus on the wages and benefits of the nurses in order to attract more nurses and retain the existing ones. Just like any other professional, nurses are always looking for organizations that greatly value them and offer better wages and salaries. Adjusting the current compensation and benefits package for the nurses is the best way to address the nursing shortage in both the short and long term. Proposal initiative My initiative entails evaluating current compensation and benefits package for nurses and determining whether it levels with that of other organizations or whether it is better. The only way the organization will be able to attract new nurses and retain the current ones is by offering a package that is better than those ones of other organizations in the region (Snavely, 2016). The first step in this initiative is conducting research in various institutions in the region and country wide to see the packages they offer their nurses. The next step is comparing the package the organization offers with the other packages investigated. The final step is making adjustments and improving the package to ensure it is very competitive not only on the regional but also on the national level. Through this, the organization will be able to attract more nurses regionally and nationally. Leadership The management is responsible of ensuring that the organization provides optimal patient care therefore it must address the nursing shortage problem. The management has tried to address the issue by advertising the nurses’ positions but there are
  • 7. minimal applicants therefore it must do something to increase the pool of applicants. The most effective way to do this is to offer a very competitive compensation and benefits package that individuals can hardly resist. Leadership is very important in ensuring this initiative is successfully adopted. Firstly, the management should come up with a team to investigate the compensation and benefits packages that other organizations regionally and nationally offer. The management should offer all the resources required to conduct the investigation nationally. The results from this investigation should be utilized in developing a competitive package that will ensure the current nurses have no reason to leave the organization and increase the pool of applicants. By improving the compensation and benefits package, the organization will be able to attract and retain nurses therefore addressing the nursing shortage in both the short and long run. • 16. Week 5 Practical Connection This week’s focus was on chapters 11 and 12, Communication and Leadership, respectively. Communication is transmitting information from one person to another in order to be on the same page. Robbins and Judge (2018) explain, if there was a such thing as “perfect communication,” then “a thought would be transmitted so the receiver understood the same mental picture the sender intended” (p. 171). Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world so there are barriers in communication, such as: filtering, selective perception, information overload, emotions, language, silence, communication apprehension, and lying (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 180-182). To provide an example, language would be the different meaning of words due to personality or age. Understanding the direction of communication is important, as there are several types involved: downward, upward, and lateral. Chapter 11 also goes into detail about the modes of communication and what type of situation is appropriate for each. The modes include, oral, written, and non- verbal. For example, written communication would be best for the transfer of “complex and lengthy” information (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 177). Going into detail about chapter 12, Leadership, several factors and concepts play a part. Several theories are mentioned, in particular behavioral theories of leadership stood out most to me. It means that people can be trained to become leaders, through education and experience. I’m sure there are several instances in which an individual who is now a leader, was not before and lacked several leadership qualities. I believe the qualities can be learned through education and then applied to the workplace and projects. Another thing I found to be a major part of this chapter is on trust. Trust is needed as a leader or
  • 17. follower, and has been proven to increase participation, make employees more involved and motivated, and provide better performance (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 201). Putting all the mentioned knowledge and concepts into practice, I first think of how learning the different modes of communication will be beneficial in my workplace. For example, we do surprise birthday celebrations for each employee and in order to inform everyone without spoiling the surprise or forgetting anyone it is best to use a premade email list and remove the employee the surprise is for. The premade email list is for the employees in my business unit and is very beneficial because it ensures no one is forgotten, and also saves a large amount of time when creating emails that everyone should receive. In addition, I believe I have not always been a natural leader, but by taking this class and learning all the concepts and acquiring beneficial knowledge, I feel like my leadership skills have improved and I will continue to show this in projects and in the workplace. When I get into a managerial position, I will motivate my employees with this knowledge of leadership skills and practices because I believe it can all be learned if they are willing. Creating a workplace with excellent communication and leadership skills is a major thing, and unfortunately some workplaces lack this due to lack of education. I hope to encourage adding this kind of information into recruiting and orientation when employees are first hired so they begin their career with the necessary information to succeed. To reiterate, a lot of employees may not have taken a class like organizational behavior, therefore informing them of concepts like these is important and they will probably find it very interesting. My final thought for this assignment is to post weekly concepts on the community board at work. A short, fun, encouraging, and informational statement can go a long way.
