Skateboards have evolved over 60 years through a series of innovations. Originally, skateboards were simply a wooden plank with roller skate wheels. Later innovations included clay wheels, a kicktail, polyurethane wheels, and rails. The major modern innovation in 1990 added grip tape, trucks that allowed for turning, and kicktails on both sides to enable new tricks. Future innovations may allow for more customizable and even hovering virtual boards tailored to individual styles.

2. Skateboards in the Beginning Skateboards have been around for 60 years. They have been innovating travel and fun.

3. First ones! Skateboards started as a plank of wood on roller skate wheels. They were relatively thin and not very fast.

4. First Innovation The first innovation created for people who enjoyed rolling around. All they did was introduce clay wheels to the bottom of a more shaped wooden plank.

5. Second For the next innovation was when the first introduced the kick tail. The also increased the width of the deck by 2 inches. (modern version of old design)

6. Third After the kicktail was introduced, they added polyurethane wheels were introduced to upgrade from the clay wheels. They also added rails to the undersides of the boards for vert riding. (no trucks back then)

7. Final Innovation The final innovation which was made in 1990 when they added grip tape and trucks. They also decreased the width of the deck by 2 inches. And finally, they added kicktails to both sides and decreased the size of the wheels for flip and switch tricks.

8. Future Innovations I feel like in the future, skateboards will be a lot more customizeable for your style of riding and what you are good at. You can pay for separate pieces now and customize a board, but that is a hassle and expensive. I think they will make boards virtual and they will hover.
