Cabrini was born in 1850 in Sant'Angelo, Italy and was one of thirteen children. She became a teacher after being educated by the Daughters of the Sacred Heart. Although she tried to join the order, her frail health after contracting smallpox led the mother superior to refuse her admittance. Cabrini died in Chicago on December 22, 1917, a date that is now commemorated as her feast day.
