Tent cities have emerged as an innovative solution to homelessness in many cities around the world. These tent cities, established by homeless people themselves, provide small individual structures for sleeping and communal facilities for bathrooms and activities. One example is Dignity Village in Portland, Maine, which has organized the homeless population into an active community. Dignity Village has become a model for other cities developing similar projects to shelter homeless people. The tent city concept aims to give homeless individuals a safe place to live while addressing the problems with traditional government-run shelters.
This document discusses why conventional disaster relief often fails and proposes alternative approaches. It notes that after natural disasters, local communities still have capacity and knowledge but conventional relief turns survivors into refugees. It advocates for approaches like Relief 2.0 that empower local stakeholders and use mobile technology to spread information. Specific ideas proposed include matching affected local businesses with similar businesses to help them reopen, and a "Solar Forward" model of empowering individuals as entrepreneurs through solar kits. The document argues for moving beyond donations to generate wealth and help communities recover their dignity and self-sufficiency.
The document provides an overview of a course on disaster volunteering. It covers 5 lessons: 1) an introduction, 2) when disasters strike, 3) the disaster response community, 4) disaster response organizations, and 5) a call to action. The lessons describe common disasters and their impacts, how the community responds collaboratively, key response organizations like the Red Cross, and steps to become a volunteer. The goal is to educate about disaster relief efforts and engage more volunteers.

Here are my slides from a keynote presentation on Sunday at Columbia University's Social Enterprise Bootcamp on Sunday November 20, 2011.
I talk about the iContact story, corporate social responsibility, the major improvements we have made as a human species over the past forty years in life expectancy, infant mortality, and per capita income, and how our generation can end extreme poverty in our lifetime.
The document summarizes Senator Loren Legarda's keynote speech about building resilience in Mindanao after Tropical Storm Sendong. The main points are:
- Sendong caused major losses in Mindanao and highlighted the need to reduce disaster and climate risks through laws and investments.
- Government has committed funds from the World Bank and National Disaster Risk Reduction Fund to support post-Sendong reconstruction efforts, though the deadline to provide all victims with permanent housing will likely be missed due to constraints.
- Building resilience requires political commitment to disaster risk reduction training and preventing natural hazards from becoming disasters through preparedness and good governance.

Community in Doshkhada village in Sirajganj, Bangladesh organized to reduce disaster risks through a village disaster management committee with support from Concern Worldwide. The committee conducted an assessment of risks, developed a risk reduction plan, and implemented various initiatives such as raising home plinths, installing tubewells, planting trees, and building a flood shelter. As a result, the community is now better prepared for floods and cyclones, with over 300 households taking risk reduction actions through their own initiative or with support from the government. The success of these efforts has inspired replication in neighboring villages.
The document discusses institutional responses to disasters in India using the 1999 Orissa cyclone as a case study. It describes how NGOs responded in three phases - immediate relief, short-term recovery efforts like food aid and infrastructure rebuilding, and long-term initiatives such as livelihood restoration, shelter construction, and reforestation. The response showed that coordinated efforts between government institutions and NGOs are more effective than any single organization alone in providing aid after large-scale disasters.

Typhoons Ondoy and Yolanda caused massive damage in the Philippines in 2009 and 2013, respectively. In response, Accenture provided relief efforts to help those affected. For Ondoy, Accenture launched a campaign to provide temporary shelter and financial aid to employees impacted. For Yolanda, Accenture donated over $2.3 million dollars worth of assistance through organizations like the Red Cross and World Vision to support reconstruction. Accenture prioritizes helping local communities affected by disasters as the Philippines has been important to the company's success for its 30 years of operations there.

1. Fire engulfs Little India flat, forcing 20 people to evacuate -
Singapore news
Introduction:
In the heart of Little India, a bustling and vibrant neighborhood in the heart of
the city, tragedy struck one fateful evening when a devastating fire destroyed
an apartment building, forcing 20 residents to evacuate. The incident left a
trail of destruction, but it also highlighted the community's remarkable
strength and solidarity in the face of adversity. In this, we take a deeper dive
into the events that unfolded that day, highlighting the heroic efforts of first
responders and the resilience of affected families in Singapore.
The Incident:
On a cool evening in Little India, as the sun disappears below the horizon,
people continue their daily lives. However, an unforeseen disaster was
lurking in the darkness. In a seemingly normal residential building, a power
outage caused a massive fire within minutes. The fire, fueled by the
building's aging structure and flammable materials, spread quickly, sending
thick clouds of black smoke into the evening sky.
2. The Response:
The Little India community sprang into action as soon as news of the fire in
Singapore broke out. Neighbors rushed to warn others of the impending
danger and helped evacuate residents from the affected apartment. The
heartwarming scene of residents helping each other testifies to the spirit of
solidarity and unity that reigns in this close-knit neighborhood.
The evacuation :
The severity of the situation became clear as firefighters struggled to contain
the raging blaze. An evacuation order was given and 20 people suddenly had
to leave their homes. Among the evacuees are children, the elderly, and
families who have lived in Little India for generations.
With the help of the local community, the evacuees were sheltered at a
nearby community center, where they received medical care and support. The
emotional outpouring of losing their homes and possessions, but the
resilience and courage of these families shone through.
Contribution to the community:
The Little India Fire brought out the best in the community, demonstrating
the unbreakable bonds that bind its residents together. Neighbors opened their
doors to displaced families, providing them with food, clothing, and a
comforting shoulder to lean on during this difficult time. Local businesses
and organizations have also provided support, providing essential products to
those affected.
The empathy and generosity of Little India's residents is a testament to the
strength and unity of the community. It's a reminder of the power of unity in
difficult times.
Recovery efforts:
3. When the blaze was finally extinguished by dedicated firefighters, the
affected families faced the difficult task of rebuilding their lives. The
apartment suffered great damage, and most of their belongings turned to
ashes. The road to recovery will be long and arduous, but the community
remains steadfast in its determination to help in any way possible.
Local authorities and relief organizations have cooperated to provide
temporary housing, financial support, and counseling to displaced people.
These efforts aim to alleviate some of the immediate burdens and offer hope
for a better future.
Awareness of fire safety:
The incident in Little India is a stark reminder of the importance of fire
safety. Even if the exact cause of the fire is an electrical fault, such incidents
can often be avoided through regular maintenance and vigilance. It is
essential that residents are aware of fire safety measures, such as having
smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and escape plans in place.
Local authorities also took this opportunity to raise community awareness
about the importance of fire safety. They have organized seminars and
educational programs to equip residents with the knowledge and tools needed
to prevent future fire disasters.
Conclusion:
The fire that destroyed the Little India apartment, forcing 20 people to
evacuate, was a heartbreaking incident that tested the strength and solidarity
of the community. Although the damage was devastating, the response of
residents, first responders, and local communities demonstrated remarkable
resilience and compassion.
In times of crisis, it is heartwarming to see a neighborhood come together to
support those in need. This incident reminds us all of the importance of fire
4. safety and preparedness. It is our duty to protect ourselves and our
communities from such disasters through vigilance, awareness, and taking
proactive measures to keep us safe. Ultimately, it is the power of a
community that helps us rise from the ashes and face a better future together.
