Silica gel is made by mixing a 10% hydrochloric acid solution with an equal volume of sodium silicate solution with a specific gravity between 1.15 and 1.22 at a temperature between 45-55 degrees C, thoroughly stirring the mixture allows the gel to form, the gel is then washed to remove acid and salt, dried in a heated air current up to 75-120 degrees C and then the temperature is slowly increased to 300-400 degrees C to produce hard solid silica gel.
