Horizontal drilling involves drilling wells at an angle to access oil and gas reserves underground. It has been used since the 1950s, when the first horizontal well was drilled in Germany using directional drilling techniques from a vertical wellbore. Modern horizontal drilling rigs from the 1950s are still in operation today.
