A direct object answers the question "what?" or "whom?
Examples:
- Max eats his food → his food is the direct object of the
verb eats. (What did Max eat?)
- Lila invited Max to the party → Max is the direct object of the
verb invited. (Whom did she invite?)
Indirect Object
An indirect object answers the question "to whom?", "for
whom?", "for what?"...
An indirect object is the receiver of the direct object. There must
be a direct object for an indirect object to be placed in a sentence.
Examples:
- I need to buy myself some clothes→ myself is the indirect
object of the verb buy (towhom did he buy the clothes)
- I’m going to buy a dress for my mother→ my mother is indirect
object of the verb buy (towhom did he buy a dress)
