Shoot Day
Evaluation
· · · · Julia Jin· · · ·
When I woke up in the
morning of the shoot day
I felt stressed and exited
because the outcome of
what we have been
planning for a long time
will be unpredictable and
so many things could go
wrong. I was also
nervous due to the same
reason, but at the same
time our outcome could
potentially turn out
great.
The day before shoot day me and my group spent three hours to hand paint three large scale
theatre flats into colourfields to use as backdrops for our sets in the music video.
Post Shoot Day
I sourced the art supplies
such as spray paint, oil
pastels and colour pencils
due to all our sets being
based artically due to my
abilities. I guided my group
along to help me paint the
theatre flats due to its
large scale and time frame.
(more detailed info on
’Setting Up in the Studiothe
Day Before’ blog post).
Overall, I am satisfied with
the suprisingly turned out
good results.

Arriving for the shoot
When arrived at the
shoot, I felt preparred
enough because I have
already solved the
theatre flats and
helped main singer’s
costume and makeup
pre-shoot.
Our set concept was fairly
straight forward. The flats
turned out to reflect very
well on camera. When I
was painting them, once
in a while I would step
back to get a better look
from far to work it further.
I helped to set up our flats
by simply adjusting the
stands or hold onto the
flats when someone else
was fastening the stands.
Preparation concept
studio Set up
When arrived at studo, the
flats were lined up laying on
the floor and we set them up
to stand by putting together
stands to hold the flats. This
was quick and easy,
My Role
In charge of ALL sets, they
are all crafted through hand.
Photos for Instagram
because I am in charge of
that too.
Oversee whole shoot due to it
was based entirely on my
creative vison.
Note taking and photo
documentation through out
whole day.
My role on the shoot day besides making and overseeing
all our sets was to direct and take photos and document
the day. I took notes and photos as well as content to
contribute for the artist’s Instagram page.

What went well?
What I think I personally
well on:
● The Art itself
● Communication
● Patience
I was able to organise my own ideas clearly to the rest of my group and
the singers and working efficiently together saved us time by the end of
shoot. e.g. specific facial expressions and body movements such as ‘the
maze’ set, where I guided both singers to show confusion in an
ungeneric way. For instance, I was them to first: look excited, then
confused, lastly lost to visually portray the different mental states of
disorientation and focusing deeper on the why. My patience is another
applied element that I successfully achieved due to my short attention
span and kept going for 6 hours.
Problems
Flats
Costume Maze
Bea’s dress had problems
with it being too revealing in
case of accidents so we
sourced a last minute white
piece of textile material to
safety pin it as a “cape”.
Due to ‘the maze’ set being build out
of corners the camera angle was
essential to consider when filming
especially the hand held shots. You
had to stand just behind the last
corner and peak through to capture
shots without the reflection.
When the singer ad rapper
meets by sliding two flats
simonteanously to connect the
two on screen. The exact timing
was needed in order to have the
flats being equally moved. We
tried three to four times to get
the final.
There were a few problems that surfaced throughout the shoot day, which was expected
and we managed to solve all of them efferently. Some of these problems include:
01 03
02
Most Successful & Enjoyed
The most successful part of the shoot was probably the eighth
take when shooting the “Dry on Wet” and changed cameras from
HD to slow-motion three second burst. This idea of having the
singer laying down on a table to sell the underwater sense of
feeling came out looking very real and sensual which was
unaccounted for.
I enjoyed the tracking shots because it was an exiting experience
to be pushed back and forth like a rollercoaster. It was an
interesting experience I have not previously done being not so
much of a camera person myself. This changed my view on camera
work until further notice.
Look Forward in editing
What I look most forward to in
editing is the shots from ‘the
doodle’ backdrop where we
improvised a lot of shots in the
very end with irregular and unique
body movements including
having flashing lights and
coloured lights. Between the
flashing lights, we planned to cut
just when it’s pitch black so it
jump cuts to a different body
position. This will be very
interesting to see the results of.
The costume problem was our only ”major” issue through out the day and it took up more time than needed
to. Instead, we should have been more observational during the pre-production fittings and have her to
actually perform in the costume rather just trying it on.
Team Work
● Good compatibility
● individualistic skills combined
● Strong work ethic and determination
● Achieved each responsibility
What could have gone better?
Lesson Learned
The most important lesson I personally learned from this
group project was to understand the importance of a
compelling way to communicate with other people as I
find working creatively with others to be challenging.
Throughout this project, I developed my communication
skills by more openly share my thoughts and to let people
in. This was possible due to good team mates asking
questions whenever I missed on further explanation when
needed.
