2. Shazam is a mobile app that recognizes music and TV around you. It is the best way
to discover, explore and share the music and TV you love.
Shazam Entertainment Limited was founded in 1999 by Chris Barton, Philip
Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang, and Dhiraj Mukherjee. Shazam connects more than 500
million people. It took us 10 years to reach 1 billion tags, 10 months to reach 2
billion, 3 months to go from 10 to 12 billion... It's an amazing app, available now in
the Apple, Android and Windows stores. And we're always looking for new and
innovative ways to delight our users.
3. Shazam works by analyzing the captured
sound by creating the fingerprint of the
audio. Shazam starts the search for matches
in the database. If there is a match, it
returns the information to the user;
otherwise it returns a "song not known"
dialogue

6. Initial Status- 2002 introduced a new technology to identify a song when the smart phone with the app
was brought to the source of music. Before the launch in the smartphone the service was known as
2580 dialing which the users get to know the music.
How they earned? – Initially they earned by charging the cost for the call . After identification of the
song, there was an option that allows the user to purchase it. They linked the song purchase to major
music providers such as iTunes, Google Play, Amazon MP3, and Spotify, and received a percentage of
each sale.
What was their major drawback and how they solved it? - One of the most common reasons for
Shazam failing to identify a song was that particular song not being in its database. For this reason the
company was always on the lookout for partnerships to bolster its musical database. In February 2013,
Shazam announced an exclusive partnership with online music retailer Beatport through which it gained
access to Beatport’s entire music catalog. The deal bolstered Shazam’s electronic music database of 25
million tracks with the addition of 1.5 million new tracks.
7. Extension of its technology- It not only remained confined to smartphone users but also enabled
TV users in the US to identify featured music, access cast information, and get links to show
information online, as well as added social networking capabilities.
Strategies to meet the new demands of users- In February 2014, Shazam announced a redesign
of the app, which included a new look and additional features, including lyric-viewing options,
access to music videos and related videos, unique recommendations, improved biographies and
discographies, and additional functionality for use with TV shows. Done to attract users to use
the app thus strategies for successful launch in the market.
Further extension of its technology- In July 2014, Shazam announced the launch of Shazam for
Mac, a desktop version of the app, which when enabled, runs in the background and
automatically recognizes any song played on or near the computer, including songs playing in the
background of TV shows or YouTube videos.
