Narrative Report
Research
My graduate work at the University of Fribourg and Rehabilitation Center, CHUV Hospital, University of
Lausanne, Switzerland engendered my interest in the field of neurological rehabilitation. My graduate
work helped me develop clinical skills to work with neurological patients as well as technical skills
related to programming and analysis of data. In my graduate work, I developed a keen interest in
approaches to alleviate movement dysfunction following stroke and cerebellar disorders. The underlying
neural mechanisms of movement recovery, however, were still not clear. I gained an opportunity to
16
investigate this question in animal models of stroke under the supervision of Dr. Eric Rouiller. The main
topic of my research was to study the anatomical neuronal regeneration in association with functional
recovery after cortical lesions in adult primates.
The mechanistic studies in primates intrigued me and encouraged me to explore neural mechanisms of
recovery in adult humans using noninvasive techniques. To this effect, I am currently utilizing
electrophysiological approaches, such as Electroencephalography (EEG) and Electromyography (EMG),
along with neurophysiological stimulation methods including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), as well as neuroimaging with functional magnetic
resonance imaging, (fMRI). This ongoing research is being conducted under the mentorship and
supervision of Dr. Alvaro Pascual-Leone at the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation
at Harvard Medical School. The preliminary results of our projects suggest that individuals with
neurological disorders exhibit plasticity of surviving networks and that the degree of plasticity is highly
correlated with behavioral measures and functional recovery. These findings provide an understanding of
the potential mechanisms involving neuronal systems as well as other long-range cortical circuits.
The graduate and post-doctoral experience in my research career has helped me progress towards my
overall goal of becoming an independent and successful researcher in the area of clinical neuroscience
and interventional neurophysiology involving patients with neurological disorders. Innovation in my
research involves the combination of research tools and techniques (e.g. simultaneous
electrophysiological recording and TMS) to provide data that any one technique cannot provide on its
own. Furtheremore, I am to bridge levels of analyses by collaborating with molecular and genetic
neuroscientists to further understand how more fundamental processes control the system’s level
mechanisms.
Teaching
Over the course of my career in academic research I have taught formally and informally. While
completing my PhD work at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, I taught in the Neurophysiology
practical course to second year medical students. More recently, since 2008, when I joined the Berenson-
Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation, I have been involved as faculty of the Intensive Course
in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. This is a continuing medical education course through Harvard
Medical School that is offered through the Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation. This course focuses
on the theory and practical applications of TMS and is offered to a wide international audience of clinical
17
and basic researchers. My involvement has been focused on the discussion of the safety aspects of the
application of TMS, as well as the practical demonstration of the use of navigated TMS based on
principles of MRI-guided frameless stereotaxy to deliver TMS over desired locations with great spatial
precision.
In King Saud University, I am involved in following teaching course at level of undergradue and
postgradute for Sensory and Motor Systems, Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience, Introduction to
Research in neuroscience , Disorders of the Nervous system.
These course cover key neurological and psychiatric diseases. Part of each class session include an
overview by a clinical expert, who will provide a clinical understanding of the disease, including signs
and symptoms. A second part will be given by a scientist who does basic research in the field, who
discuss experimental strategies and current hypotheses about pathophysiological mechanisms at the
cellular and genetic level.

Narrative Report Research My graduate work at the University of Fribourg and Rehabilitation Center, CHUV Hospital, University of Lausanne, Switzerland engendered my interest in the field of neurological rehabilitation. My graduate work helped me develop clinical skills to work with neurological patients as well as technical skills related to programming and analysis of data. In my graduate work, I developed a keen interest in approaches to alleviate movement dysfunction following stroke and cerebellar disorders. The underlying neural mechanisms of movement recovery, however, were still not clear. I gained an opportunity to
  • 16. 16 investigate this question in animal models of stroke under the supervision of Dr. Eric Rouiller. The main topic of my research was to study the anatomical neuronal regeneration in association with functional recovery after cortical lesions in adult primates. The mechanistic studies in primates intrigued me and encouraged me to explore neural mechanisms of recovery in adult humans using noninvasive techniques. To this effect, I am currently utilizing electrophysiological approaches, such as Electroencephalography (EEG) and Electromyography (EMG), along with neurophysiological stimulation methods including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), as well as neuroimaging with functional magnetic resonance imaging, (fMRI). This ongoing research is being conducted under the mentorship and supervision of Dr. Alvaro Pascual-Leone at the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation at Harvard Medical School. The preliminary results of our projects suggest that individuals with neurological disorders exhibit plasticity of surviving networks and that the degree of plasticity is highly correlated with behavioral measures and functional recovery. These findings provide an understanding of the potential mechanisms involving neuronal systems as well as other long-range cortical circuits. The graduate and post-doctoral experience in my research career has helped me progress towards my overall goal of becoming an independent and successful researcher in the area of clinical neuroscience and interventional neurophysiology involving patients with neurological disorders. Innovation in my research involves the combination of research tools and techniques (e.g. simultaneous electrophysiological recording and TMS) to provide data that any one technique cannot provide on its own. Furtheremore, I am to bridge levels of analyses by collaborating with molecular and genetic neuroscientists to further understand how more fundamental processes control the system’s level mechanisms. Teaching Over the course of my career in academic research I have taught formally and informally. While completing my PhD work at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, I taught in the Neurophysiology practical course to second year medical students. More recently, since 2008, when I joined the Berenson- Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation, I have been involved as faculty of the Intensive Course in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. This is a continuing medical education course through Harvard Medical School that is offered through the Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation. This course focuses on the theory and practical applications of TMS and is offered to a wide international audience of clinical

My involvement has been focused on the discussion of the safety aspects of the application of TMS, as well as the practical demonstration of the use of navigated TMS based on principles of MRI-guided frameless stereotaxy to deliver TMS over desired locations with great spatial precision. In King Saud University, I am involved in following teaching course at level of undergradue and postgradute for Sensory and Motor Systems, Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience, Introduction to Research in neuroscience , Disorders of the Nervous system. These course cover key neurological and psychiatric diseases. Part of each class session include an overview by a clinical expert, who will provide a clinical understanding of the disease, including signs and symptoms. A second part will be given by a scientist who does basic research in the field, who discuss experimental strategies and current hypotheses about pathophysiological mechanisms at the cellular and genetic level.
