UNC SHADOWS – PARENT PERMISSION SLIP
STUDENT NAME: _______________________ SCHOOL: ____________ DATE: ________
BLUE RIBBON YOUTH LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (YLI) would like to introduce “UNC
Shadows”, a college prep project that allows Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools’ (CHCCS)
sophomores, juniors, and some seniors shadow a UNC student on campus during one of their
teacher work days. Students will be matched with hosts according to the same gender and shared
academic interests. These visits would occur once EACH semester. Below are the dates your
child would be on UNC’s campus with their “shadow host”.
 FALL: Tuesday, November 8, 2016, and
 SPRING: Monday, April 3, 2017
CHCCS students will be able to sit in on their host’s classes, have lunch in the dining hall (paid
for by BRMA), take a personalized campus tour, visit on-campus libraries and resource offices,
and discuss what it’s like to be a student of color at a predominately White institution (PWI). Our
goal for this particular project is to instill in our students a deeper interest in applying to college
and a broader knowledge on what they might expect as an incoming college student. Often times
the transition to college for a student of color, particularly to a PWI, can be difficult for a
number of reasons. As all students in our program are students of color, we hope to equip them
as much as possible for when that transition comes.
With your permission, we would like for your child to participate in this wonderful educational
opportunity. Parents/guardians must complete the form and sign below for students to
participate. Forms are due back no later than WEDS., OCTOBER 26, 2016.
