Critical IT equipment is housed and organized in server rack enclosures or server rack cabinets, which are also used in smaller computer closets. In addition to servers, routers, power distribution units (PDUs), uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, console port servers, and KVM switches, they are metal frame constructions. Open racks provide greater room and flexibility, while enclosed racks with lockable side panels and doors provide security and thwart unauthorized entry or theft. If the server racks will be located outside of a secure server room, in an unsecured area, or far away, such as network edge applications, enclosed racks are a preferable solution.
