FPCA TOURS LOCAL RECYCLING CENTER
God's creation is groaning under an increasing burden of
plastics. Many of these plastics can be recycled but recycling has
become more complicated for consumers since China stopped
taking our plastic trash in 2018. No longer can we rely on the
numbers inside the tiny chasing arrows to tell us what can
or cannot be recycled. To understand what the changes are,
thirteen FPCA members including three children took a tour of
Curbie, the local recycling sorting facility.
What Curbie will accept depends on how far the recyclables
need to be transported to be processed. That explains why some
things that you used to be able to recycle such as Styrofoam,
clear plastic clamshells, and black microwaveable trays are no
longer accepted in Western North Carolina. You may still put the
following items in your big blue bin or blue bag:
Plastic bottles, tubs, jugs and jars
Metal cans, emptied
Glass bottles and jars
Paper, cartons and cardboard.
Plastic bags are a major “No-No” at Curbie, a private company owned by a local couple. Plastic bags that make
it to Curbie must be removed by hand so that they do not get tangled in the machinery. If they do, the line
needs to be stopped and the plastic bags cut out. Curbie pays the landfill $10,000 a month to discard all the
plastic bags that come into the plant. Keep Curbie in business by recycling your plastic wrap, pillows and bags
at most local grocery stores.
Recycling is not the complete answer to disposing of our trash that desecrates God’s creation. The other two
arrows in the recycling symbol stand for reduce and reuse. Try reducing your waste by using reusables like
travel coffee mugs and washable water bottles. Instead of buying new, reuse what you have or use it for a
different purpose.

PRIDE FESTIVAL – SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 24 – 9:30 AM
FPC Asheville will once again participate in the Pride Festival Procession after a
pandemic hiatus. Join us on the lawn at 40 Church Street the morning of the 24th – at
9:30 am. We will walk over to the starting line at 23 Grove Street as a group or you can
meet us there. The actual procession will begin at 10 am.
Typically the procession takes 30 minutes. After walking
with our group, we encourage our members to attend the festival and learn how our
community supports Pride! First Presbyterian Pride T-shirts will be on sale on our lawn
after the 11 o’clock service on September 11th and 18th for $12.00 each – proceeds will
go to Youth Outright.

3. SILENT RETREAT: NOVEMBER 19
NURTURING GRATITUDE AND ANTICIPATION THROUGH A DAY OF SILENCE
Gratitude is the heart of thanksgiving, and the traditional Thanksgiving time is coming
soon. Closely following is the season of Advent, giving us the opportunity to prepare for
and anticipate the coming of the Christ child.
The Psalmist says “Be still and know that I am God.” Sometimes it is difficult to be still in
our busy lives, especially in November and December. On Saturday, November 19th, the
Adult Faith Formation Committee will offer a wonderful opportunity for quiet, prayer,
meditation, and reflection to be held at the church from 9:30am to 3:30pm and facilitat-
ed by Alice Petersen. These hours will enable you to leave the busyness and stresses of your daily
life and enjoy, with others, the beautiful gift of silence. A time of silence takes the energy we usually
devote to communication with others and various tasks, channeling that same energy inward to our
lives with God. The day will be limited to fifteen persons. Come and nurture gratitude and anticipa-
tion in silence with others.
ZENTANGLE; PEN, PAPER & PRAYER

We are meeting again for our Zentangle; Pen, Paper, and Prayer event, 1:00 -4:00 pm.
The spiritual practice is a wonderful way to reflect on God through
creativity with others. Belinda Greenaway will be leading. The cost is $25

The FPCA Retreat has a long history of fun, learning, activities, and rest. With a variety

KOINONIA GROUPS
The Merriam Webster dictionary defines koinonia as “spiritual communion and
participative sharing in a common religious commitment and spiritual community.” FPCA
will be starting Koinonia small groups this fall to support members in their faith life and
to build Christian friendships. Groups will meet for 90 minutes, twice a month, October-
May. These groups will be participant based, with a trained facilitator. The curriculum
will help participants explore different ways of experiencing the power of God, spiritual
practices, the enneagram, and ways to engage scripture. For more information, please

NEW MEMBERS WHO JOINED IN AUGUST
Born in Charlotte, Frances Alexander has also lived
in Washington, D. C. She enjoys historic preservation,
gardening, and getting involved with other hands-on work
like writing, cooking, and decorating. She has been involved
in many ministries, including stewardship, Room in the Inn,
and children’s choir. Frances now lives in Asheville with
her sister, Mary Edith, and says that, for her, “community is
continuity.”
Born in Charlotte, Mary Edith Alexander has now
moved to Asheville and is adjusting to a new life here.
Mary Edith has been a member at First Presbyterian at
Charlotte, and she admits that this is the first time she
has left her home church. She is interested in learning,
missions, and social and racial justice. She lives with
her sister, Frances.
Born in Kenmore, NY, Liz Andres has lived in Colorado.
She now lives in Asheville with husband Mark. They have
two adult children, Nicole and Paul. Liz likes cooking,
decorating, and worship arts. An ER and staff nurse,
Liz is interested to discover how her previous faith as a
Lutheran will find expression here at First Presbyterian.

5. KEITH & SARAH CALLOWAY
REBECCA “BECKY” JOHNSON
Keith Calloway is a native Ashevillian. Sarah Calloway, born
in Greensboro, NC, came to Asheville for undergraduate
study at UNCA in 2000. They married almost 10 years
ago. Both of them are seeking balances in their work and
personal lives so they can find their places of service here
and build fellowship within their new church home. Their
shared interests include cooking and care for the earth.
Keith is interested in Creation Care, and Sarah cares for
creation through gardening and landscaping.
Born in Rockford, IL, Becky Johnson lived in Asheville for
10 years, from 1982 to 1992. She moved back here 11 years
ago, in 2011, to live at Deerfield. In the past, Becky was
involved at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.
She enjoyed cooking, welcoming, encouraging, and
providing leadership for various ministries. She mentioned
that she finds the worship here at First Presbyterian to be
inspiring.

6. WHAT HAPPENED IN AUGUST: Youth went to Charleston, Chancel Choir Retreat, Liturgical arts dyed
coffee filters for a project.
