RegionThe Seminoles lived in the Eastern Woodlands. This area includes the state of Florida.
FoodThe Seminoles gathered together to cook and eat. They even had a special place to eat in the village. This place was called the eating house. All meals were eaten there. Seminole people raised cattle. They also caught fish, turtles, deer, and turkey. Corn and pumpkins were also part of the Seminole diet. Corn was a staple for the Seminole.
ShelterThe Seminole Indians lived in a home called a chickee. A chickee is made from cypress trees and palmetto leaves. The floor is a platform that is three feet off the ground.
ClothingThe Seminole women wore long skirts and puffy blouses. Seminole men wore knee-length shirts. Their clothing is known for being brightly colored and having many patterns.
The Green Corn CeremonyThe Green Corn Ceremony is a special event. It is held every year to celebrate the growing season. It also celebrates a new year and new beginnings. The Green Corn Ceremony lasted four to eight days. Dancing, games, and religious events happened during this time. Men danced and sang. Men did not eat anything during the Green Corn Ceremony. They drank strong teas that helped to cleanse their bodies.
