3.  World Intellectual Property Organization is one of the
15 specialized Agencies of the United Nations
 Its parent organisation is ECOSOC
 WIPO was created in 1967 “To Encourage creative
activity, To promote the protection of intellectual
property through out the world”
 WIPO currently has 187 member states administrators
26 international treaties , and is headquartered in
Geneva , Switzerland
 The current director general of WIPO is Francis Gurry
 WIPO became a specialized agency of the UN in 1974

4.  Presently, there are 188 member states including the
ne states of Cook Islands, Holy See and Niue.
 The non members states are Federated States of
Micronesia and South Sudan
 While the state of Palestine has received the status of a
permanent observer.

5.  It had been established in 1893 to administer the Berne
Convention For The Protection of Literary and Artistic
works.
 Formally came into force on 26 April 1970 by the
Convention Establishing World Intellectual Property
Organisation
 Article 3 of the Convention states that WIPO shall
seek “to promote the protection of Intellectual
Property Rights throught the world”

6.  Intellectual property rights are the legally recognized
exclusive rights to creations of the mind. Under in law
, owners are granted certain exclusive rights to variety
of in tangible assets , such as musical , literary and
artistic works .
 Common types of intellectual property includes
copyright , trademarks, patents , and industrial design
rights.

7. Article 1 of the agreement between the WIPO and UN
reads out the responsibility;-
 “ For promoting creative intellectual activity and for
facilitating the transfer of technology related to
industrial property to developing countries in order to
accelerate economic , Social and cultural development
, subject to the competence and responsibilities of the
UN and it’s Organs , Particularly the UN conference
on Trade and Development , the Un development
program and the UN’s Industrial development
organization , as well as of the UN educational ,
Scientific and cultural organization and of other
agencies with in the Un system ”

8.  WIPO has significant financial resources independent
of the contributions from its member states In
December 2011 , WIPO published it’s first world
property report on the changing face of innovations ,
the first such report of the new office of the chief
economist WIPO is also a co-publisher of the global
innovation index

12.  It is an annual report published by WIPO, providing a
wide range indiacators covering the areas of
Intellectual Property.
 It draws on data from national and regional IP offices,
WIPO, World Bank and the UNESCO.
 It publishes the the reports annually since 2009.

13.  In Oct 2004, WIPO agreed to adopt a proposal offered by
Argentina and Brazil which was “Proposal for the
establishment of a Developmental Agenda of WIPO” from
the Geneva Declaration on the Future of The WIPO.
 It is composed over 45 recommendations and well
supported as well as agreed by developing countries.
 This aimed at protecting the interests of right holders to
one that has increasingly incorporated the interests of
stake holders in the IPR system as well as integrating into
the broader corpus of International Law on Human Rights,
Environment and Economic Cooperation.

14.  WIPO has established WIPONET , a global info
network.
 The project seeks to link over 300 intellectual property
offices in all WIPO member states .
 In addition to providing a means of secure
communication among all connected
parties,WIPONET Foundation for WIPO’s Intellectual
property services.

15.  WIPO is the Global forum for intellectual property
Services , policy information and co-operation.
 WIPO’s Staff Share a common goal – An efficient and
