The CaixaForum in Madrid, Spain was designed by Herzog & de Meuron to draw the urban community into the space. The ground level is exposed to the street, while the building is raised to create public space underneath on the 1st floor. Housed in an old industrial building, the floating level creates positive interest by defying gravity and drawing attention. The overhang generates common spaces and provides outreach to connect the building to the community.
