1. What is the origin of the holiday known as Easter?
      Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
2. How do some people here in the U.S celebrate Easter? (secular and religious)
      The Americans do Easter egg hunting, for kids to go find where the eggs are
hidden.
3. What do you know about how it is celebrated in Spain?
      I don’t know how they celebrate Easter in Spain.

4. What does Semana Santa mean?
        Holy Week in Seville is one of the most important traditional events of the city.
5. When is it?
        Celebrated in the week leading up to Easter.
6. Where are the processions going and why?
        Designated route from their home churches and chapels to the Cathedra, usuallly
via a central viewing area and back. From the suburban barríos may take 14 hours to
return to their home churches.
7. What are brotherhoods and what is their purpose?
        Semana Santa are the brotherhood (Hermandades y Cofradias de Penitencía),
associations of Catholic layperson organized the purpose of perfomring public acts of
religious observance, related to the Passion and death of Jesus Christ and to perform
public penance.
8. What happens during Semana Santa?
        The brotherhoods march from their home church or chapel to the Cathedral of
Seville and back.
9. Who are Nazarenos and how are they dressed?
        The earliest known as brotherhood. Dressed in a habit and with the distinctive
pointed hood, and holding long wax candles, marching in silence.
10. What is at the beginning of the processions? In the middle?
        A great cross is carried at the beginning of each procession. In the middle are
diputados de trmo, guardians who keep the formations organized.
11. What is a Paso?
        An image or set of images set atop a movable float of wood.

12. What are 3 possible pasos? How old are some of them?
       1. a sculpted scene of the Passion, or an allegorical scene, known as a mystery;
2. an image of Jesus Christ; and 3. an image of the Virgin Mary, known as a dolorosa.
The oldest surviving were carved in 16th century, even though new images are being
added.
13. Who are costaleros and what do they do?
       A team of men, the costaleros, they support the beams upon their shoulders and
necks, life, move and lower the paso.
14. What is the traditional dress of women for this? for men?
       The traditional suit worn by women on Maundry Thursday is known as La
Mantilla; lace mantle, stiffened by shell or another material, and a black dress, usually
mid-leg with black shoes; expect woman to hold, and show a rosary. the traditional wear
for male dress is a dark suit, black necktie and shoes.
15. How do people behave as the processions go past?
       The whole procession is traditionally watched in silence, the crow behaves
normally.

big festival held every year.

       To bring good luck.
