Self introduction “ Let's make the best out of our lives” Bao-Lan Huynh April 18, 2007
Who am I ? Swiss citizen from Vietnamese origins 24 years Master student at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL) Major: Communication systems Coming from the French part of Switzerland In Japan for 5-6 months for internship Learn a little of Japanese before coming but I will learn more here
Past Experience & Studies Bachelor ‘s degree in communication systems, EPFL Minor ‘s degree in Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship, EPFL 1 year exchange at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA (Electrical & Computer Engineering) 3 months internship in a private bank (Credit Agricole, Logistics & IT Services)
Past research (I) Research talks on holographic storage (CMU): Nowadays need in high storage capacity keeps increasing Holographic storage provide high density storage and fast data retrieval (3D storage with laser, similar to Blu-ray but more efficient) Now capacity is 300 GB-1.6 TB with 20-120 MB/s data rate with a very low price ($ 0.6-0.20) We look for applications for holographic storage and try to implement a video surveillance system with fast and efficient search functions (fuzzy search) we were trying to have a scene pattern recognition search function (i.e. searching for a red coat)
Past research (II) Research project on Graph theory methods for brain modeling, EPFL (in Algorithmic Research on Network Information Lab): looking for methods to identify schizophrenic people by analyzing their brain connectivity used several algorithmic metrics (shortest path between 2 neurons, diameter, cycles) to solve the problem used information dissemination (coherence and partial coherence)
Hobbys ? Traveling and discovering new cultures Reading (French literature, science-fiction, sometimes Japanese) Learning about new technologies and gadgets (focus on internet) Japanese cultures (so diverse !) Collecting panda teddy bears
Interests in Japan Traveling (Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Tokyo ?) Food (taste and texture; I tried takoyaki, yummy!) Music (Aki Angela, The Pillows) Manga (Miyazaki Hayao, Urasawa Naoki) Others (sumo, tayko drums, cultural differences) Wrote 2 papers about Japan: Comparison between sumo wrestling and football in Japan (on the traditional and modern point of view) Japanese pop cultures: impacts of Japanese pop cultures on western countries and vice-versa
Why did I choose to come to Japan ? Japan is an exciting place for innovation and communication technologies Learn about Japanese model Personal challenge (after being in Europe and USA, Asia is missing and Japan is a good choice) Experience Japanese life
Thank You ! I will do my best during the internship Let‘s work together
