2. Awareness: The Best Defense
• White – Casually unaware of surroundings
• Yellow – Aware and alert
• Orange – Sensing or perceiving possible threat
• Red – Threat positively identified
-Fight: Create Pain, Create Space, Escape
-Flight: Escape
4. Considerations for Dealing with Armed
Attackers
• Give them whatever they
want.
• Get the hell out of there.
5. Self Defense and The Law
• 18-1-704 Use Of Physical Force In Defense Of A Person
• 1. A person is justified in using physical force upon another person in order to
defend himself or a third person from what he reasonably believes to be the use
or imminent use of unlawful physical force by that other person, and he may use a
degree of force which he reasonably believes to be necessary for that purpose.
• 3. Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (1) of this section, a person is
NOT justified in using physical force if:
• (a.) With intent to cause bodily injury or death to another person, he provokes the
use of unlawful physical force by that other person; or
• (b.) He is the initial aggressor, except that his use of physical force upon another
person under the circumstances is justifiable if he withdraws from the encounter
and effectively communicates to the other person his intent to do so, but the
latter nevertheless continues or threatens the use of unlawful physical force; or
• (c.) The physical force involved is the product of a combat by agreement not
specifically authorized by law.
6. Instances Where Compliance is Not
Advised
• Whenever the attacker wants to move you to
a more isolated location (in your car, in an
alley, behind a bush, etc.)
• Whenever the attacker seems more interested
in YOU than in your property
• Whenever you feel that harm directed at you
is imminent and unavoidable
7. Knives
• There is no such thing as a knife fight.
• In close quarters, knives are more dangerous
than guns.
• Knives have a limited range, but are deadly in a
360 degree arc around the attacker.
• Getting distance and escaping is the only
reasonable method of dealing with an attacker
armed with a knife.
• If you cannot be reasonable, you need an
equalizer.
12. Weapons of Opportunity
• Nearly anything you pick up can be a weapon
• Develop a ‘Weapon of Opportunity’ mindset
• Examples: Belts, Cars, Coke Cans, Dirt,
Magazines, Pencils, Pieces of Paper, Pens,
Rocks, Rolls of Coins, Sticks… anything that can
increase your hitting power or give you a
mechanical advantage.
13. Guns
• Extremely lethal in a straight line.
• Extremely loud.
• The maximum effective range of the average
pistol is about 150 feet (50 meters).
• The bullet can still travel up to 5400 feet (1800
meters) at an unreliable trajectory.
16. Cover and Concealment
• Cover is anything that you can hide behind that will
also stop a bullet
examples: concrete walls, car engine
blocks, laying down behind a curb
• Concealment is anything that will hide you from a
shooter, but will not stop a bullet
examples: curtains or blinds, a wooden desk,
bushes, drywall, laying down in the back seat of a
car
17. Disarming?
• All disarms and drills we go over today are
designed to give you an appreciation for
weapon lethality.
• There are no guaranteed techniques that will
work 100 percent of the time.
• Do not attempt any of this in real life – unless
you have good reason to believe that your
attacker intends to kill you.
