J.S. Lee presented research at several scientific conferences between 2008-2009 on calcium transients in mouse preBötzinger neurons that generate inspiratory bursts. The research showed that endogenous synaptic activity in these neurons drives burst generation through dendritic calcium transients, and that synaptic inputs are important for respiratory rhythmogenesis in neonatal mice.

This study investigated the use of noninvasive neuromodulation strategies to reactivate motor control in individuals with complete paralysis. Specifically, it used transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the spinal cord combined with passive limb movements and pharmacological intervention to facilitate voluntary locomotor-like movements. Over 18 weeks of weekly training, all 5 subjects showed improvements in their ability to generate stepping movements, both with and without stimulation. Electrophysiological data provided evidence that connectivity between the brain and spinal cord was reestablished. The combined noninvasive strategies were able to transform dormant neural networks into functional systems capable of voluntary movement recovery after complete paralysis.

This article summarizes 8 studies that examined the effects of various resistance training interventions on vertical jump performance in athletes. The studies tested interventions such as Olympic weightlifting, power lifting, back squats, and line drills. Most studies found that resistance training can improve vertical jump height, with some studies finding Olympic weightlifting may provide slightly greater improvements than power lifting. However, the increases in vertical jump from resistance training were generally small.
