The Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954 ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, overturning the 1896 Plessy vs. Ferguson decision that allowed "separate but equal" public facilities. This landmark decision helped establish the precedent that segregation is inherently unequal and struck down the legal basis for racial segregation in America. The ruling marked a major victory for the civil rights movement and helped advance the country towards a more just and equitable society with equal treatment under the law.
