The U.S. Department of Transportation held award ceremonies to honor outstanding FAA employees. DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx commended award winners for their innovations in implementing NextGen and regulating drones. At the FAA ceremony, Administrator Michael Huerta said the employees' work allows for the safest aerospace system. Awards were given for meritorious achievements, excellence, transportation safety, professionalism initiatives, and other teams and programs.
This document discusses skillanthropy, which is using skills to help those in need through solidarity rather than charity. It provides links to organizations that deliver medical supplies by drone in Africa and teach coding skills to refugees. It promotes learning from each other through solidarity instead of top-down charity. The quote emphasizes that solidarity respects both parties and involves learning from one another.
This 3-page newsletter from the WVDOT Research and Special Studies Section discusses automated and connected vehicles. The lead article explores the levels of automation, opportunities and challenges of the technology, and key research areas like infrastructure, testing, energy/environment, and cybersecurity. A letter from the section head discusses setting up an advisory committee to study impacts on West Virginia. Other articles profile an ongoing seeding study, introduce a researcher involved, and announce new engineering facilities at Marshall and WVU. The newsletter concludes with a call for submitting new problem statements.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) was founded in 1973 to improve motorcycle safety through research-based rider education and training. The MSF works with governments, state agencies, and others to provide training to riders of all skill levels. Its goals are to make motorcycling safer through lifelong quality education and advocating for a safer riding environment.
Public service announcements can help reduce distracted driving by educating the public about the dangerous consequences of behaviors such as texting while driving. PSAs reach wide audiences through television and social media and use celebrities to spread their message. However, some drivers, especially teens, believe they are exempt from the risks. Distracted driving causes thousands of deaths and injuries annually. Combining strict laws, enforcement, and effective public education campaigns through PSAs can change unsafe driving behaviors.
Homelessness affects many groups in society, including families, children, veterans, and young adults. There are approximately 1.7 million homeless young adults in the US. Everyone in society is impacted by homelessness in some way. People can help address this issue by donating to organizations that support the homeless or by volunteering their time.
This document summarizes a study that compared how caregivers in different cultures make decisions about how their children travel to school. The study interviewed caregivers who lived within walking distance of two elementary schools in Austin, Texas. The interviews explored factors like the physical environment, household constraints, attitudes, and social/cultural influences that impacted whether children walked or took other forms of transportation to school. The findings could help inform population-specific programming and policies to encourage more children to walk or bike to school.
Being Canadian involves valuing freedom as an individual, security, equality, community, pride, charity, acceptance, protection, and respect according to the document. The document lists these qualities and provides source images related to each one without further explanation.
Cell phone use, whether talking or texting, is the number one cause of distracted driving according to a GEICO representative. Even hands-free devices can take a driver's attention away from the road. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash nearly 4 times, with 37% of US drivers reporting having fallen asleep while driving. Having passengers in the car, especially for young drivers, is distracting as passengers can ask the driver to do things. Eating while driving risks lives by taking a driver's hands off the wheel and slowing reaction times. Multi-tasking like changing music or using an iPod takes a driver's eyes off the road for too long.

The document describes SplitSecond, a driver safety program for 16-24 year olds in Orange and Seminole Counties, Florida. It aims to positively influence risky driving behaviors through an innovative, technology-based approach that communicates directly with young adults. The program is led by Lennon Moore and Jackie VanderPol and aims to reduce fatalities and injuries in this age group by 40% through online training incentives and collaboration with schools and organizations. It will be evaluated by researchers at the University of Central Florida who will analyze crash statistics before and after the program. The budget to launch the pilot program is $1.2 million.
This document provides a summary of Patrick W. Maher's professional experience and qualifications. It lists his educational background in business marketing from the University of Illinois. It then outlines his extensive experience serving on numerous advisory boards for organizations focused on disability, employment, and accessibility. This document presents the findings of a study conducted by the University of Central Florida for the Florida Department of Transportation to develop 1) a safety prioritization tool to assist in prioritizing sidewalk and bicycle lane gaps based on safety, socioeconomic, and fiscal factors, and 2) statewide average pedestrian crash rates. The study analyzed geographic data on sidewalk gaps, crash data from several counties, and developed pedestrian crash rates for different locations to identify areas with rates higher than the state average. The results can help prioritize gap closures and identify locations needing safety improvements.
The document provides information about the Traffic Safety Summit 2012 being held on September 27, 2012 in Houma, Louisiana. The summit is organized by the South Central Safe Community Partnership to address traffic safety issues through education, enforcement, engineering, and emergency services. The objectives of the summit are to increase awareness of traffic safety issues, assess data and analyze transportation safety practices, and encourage collaboration between agencies. The summit will include presentations on impaired driving, occupant protection, young drivers, and infrastructure safety, as well as breakout sessions on these topics.

It features articles on upcoming transportation-related events, such as the TransOvation workshop in November and the importance of the 2014 elections for transportation issues. It also previews the 11th annual "Through the Lens" photo feature showing construction projects. The cover photo shows a rail transit project in Hawaii.
Citizen input on what comprised quality of life and what role transportation played in it. This research also explored in detail the important factors across the breadth of transportation and how the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) was performing on these important factors. Results will inform MnDOT planning, reporting, programming, and services.

2. In separate ceremonies, FAA employees were honored for their outstanding achievement
as winners of the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary’s Annual Awards at DOT
and FAA headquarters. This is the highest honor FAA employees can achieve.
DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx commended winners in his speech at the Secretary’s Awards
Ceremony at DOT Headquarters. Foxx specifically mentioned innovations by the FAA in
implementing NextGen and regulating unmanned aircraft systems, and highlighted the
critical role the FAA plays in ensuring safety in an ever-changing world.
“You are an impressive group of
forward-thinking individuals,” he said.
“All of you are working hard on a daily
basis to make this country a better
place, ensuring that we are not just
preserving our transportation systems
today, but better equipping them to
embrace the changes of tomorrow.”
At the FAA ceremony, Administrator
Michael Huerta said, “These award
ceremonies remind us that, every day, each of us has an opportunity to be extraordinary.
That the work we do allows the most complex aerospace system in the world to also be the
safest. It brings families together and connects people and businesses with opportunities
around the globe.”
Huerta spoke on the importance of the FAA Strategic Initiatives
(https://my.faa.gov/org/staffoffices/AOA1/Strategic_Initiatives_Group.html) , but made clear that those
goals are not possible without the agency’s hard-working employees -- the driving force
behind them: “Without our employees, the Strategic Initiatives are just words on paper. It’s
all of you who breathe life into them.”
