Set Designers Job
• The Set designer should construct the set
according to the mood and the themes of the
play.
• In addition, they should work together with
the other designers to collaborate in a central
design so the play is consistent with every
element, creating a well put display.
Overall Setting
• The setting of the play is around the 1900’s,
therefore the props and stage should be in a
more rustic, old country time kind of color
scheme.
• The set should be able to quickly disassemble and
be stable enough for the actors and actresses to
perform their best.
• Using the dark brown and rustic orange colors of
fall, the mood is set to how it would have been in
Russia during the time of the play.
• Also in the summer time of Russia, it is still cold,
so by turning down the air conditioning, the
audience will get a better feel for the play.
Sorin’s House
For the House
• In order to make the set multifunctional, we must
make a 2D version out of wood with a rustic
wood color scheme to portray the correct time
period of the Russian play.
• By making it in 2D, it is able to be easily removed
from the stage and makes it quicker to change
the set for another scenes.
• For the house, we will need wood, doors, and
windows but they should be hollowed out
instead of with glass so the the audience could
hear Masha when she points to their set.
The House (Cont.)
• In addition, the 2D model of the house should
be double sided so that we are able to just
rotate the house and we can proceed with the
scenes that pertain in the inside of the house.
Sorin’s Set
For the Set
• For the background, we would have a print out or light
wood work of the pond and the trees that are in the
play. We print the image of the pond and the trees into
a curtain and use a curtain rod to maneuver the
background throughout the play.
• As for the performance stage, the set would have to be
built out of wood with wheels so that it could be
transported to and from the back in order to change
the set this would be the realistic image that the play
would emit therefore being the central image.
The Set (Cont.)
• As for the tables, they would just be regular
tables that are roll-able and also the chairs as
well. But the material of the props would be
made out of trees and have a hand built look
to it instead of a modern machined look.
• Overall, the set should be made to look like it
was hand built and easily retractable since the
set is only a temporary one in the play.
• We should use tables and chairs like these:

And the wood for the stage should be this texture:
