Sea shanties were work songs sung by sailors to help coordinate their labor and relieve boredom. They came in different types for specific tasks like trimming sails, raising sails, raising anchors, and pumping. The call-and-response format with emphasis on repeated words made the songs easy to learn and join. An example shanty called "Haul Away Joe" is presented to demonstrate this format. Shanty singing traditions exist around the world.
