Film on Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation (CWCF)
- Treatment Note
P a g e | 3
Kindly use the following storyline as the rough basis for the film. In many sections, I’ve
indicated the rough dialogue that will be mouthed by whoever says it. For a natural feel,
feel free to request the interviewee to be as impromptu as possible…
Open film with blank screen.
Strains of Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Vasihanava Janato’ song can be heard in the background.
We just use the first two lines: Vasihanava Janato tene kahiye je…peed paraayi na jaane
re…
A quote from Gandhi fills the screen:
"I do not believe in the doctrine of the greatest good of the greatest number.
The only real, dignified, human doctrine is the greatest good of all."
THE GREATEST COMMON GOOD title fills the screen…
The Story of Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation appears next as a sub-title.
Dissolve to a little slum boy (perhaps an inmate of Udavum Karangal) beaming. Camera
pulls back. You notice, he’s holding a placard with THE BEGINNING written on it.
Shot 1
P a g e | 4
Dissolve to an eightyish old man seated in a chair. He’s talking to the camera passionately.
Super appears: Mr. Narayanan, Founder Manager – CWCF.
“What do you do when people give you large sums of money? What do you do when they
want that money to be used for the greatest common good of Chennai? Well, you’ll start an
organization that helps organizations help people. That’s what we did…when we set up the
Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation.”
Cut to shot of CWCF office façade.
Mr. Narayan’s voice can be heard recounting: Established in 1998, the Chennai Willingdon
Corporate Foundation is a Non-profit organization created with the help of 52 corporate
bodies.
Dissolve to a series of sepia tinted photographs of Willingdon Hospital in Old Madras,
Willingdon Hospital in 1996, Sankar Netralaya image, shot of laying of the foundation
stone of CWCF and the current shot of the CWCF office.
One can hear Mr. Narayan’s voice in the background: Our charitable trust was instituted
from the proceeds of the sale of the 90-year old Willingdon Hospital to Shankar Netralaya.
From Day 1, our mandate has been clear: To utilize the interest earned from our corpus to
fund worthy causes championed by deserving institutions in the domains of social welfare
and public service…
Dissolve to a little girl in school uniform smiling. Pull back. She’s holding a placard with
the message: OUR INITIATIVES
Dissolve to Mr. Balasubramanyam speaking to the camera: Let’s get one thing straight –
Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation is not an NGO. We don’t raise funds for
causes. We don’t seek money from the public. We don’t have an army of volunteers serving
people directly. We are just a charitable trust with a corpus of funds. Our role is to find a
worthy cause. And then to fund the worthy cause. In the 10 years of our existence, we’ve
supported over 70 remarkable organizations by disbursing 13.64 crores of rupees… And I
can tell you, every rupee we’ve given has changed a life somewhere…
Dissolve to face of old man wearing dark glasses. He says: Enakku Glaucoma…enna
Willingdon eppidi help panraanga theriyuma?
Camera pulls back. He smiles. And points to the placard with GLAUCOMA RESEARCH
written on it.
Dissolve to camera entering Sankar Netralaya Glaucoma Research Center. Shots of patients
being examined. Put through the test. And doctor’s counseling patients…
Doctor’s voice describes: Glaucoma is a potentially blinding disease that affects 66 million
persons worldwide. It is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Early diagnosis
P a g e | 5
is critical to avoid potential loss of vision. Now to develop strategies for early diagnosis
and treatment of this disease we require data on the prevalence, distribution and pattern of
Glaucoma. There is a severe paucity of such data from India. If this data were available it
would be possible to identify persons at risk of developing the disease….This is where
Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation helped us. They’ve provided us 2.9 crores of
rupees for the Chennai Glaucoma Study. They’ve helped us create a special facility with all
the necessary equipment and tools to examine 7800 persons aged over 40 from all parts of
Tamil Nadu. The 4.2 million invaluable data points we’ve gathered was distributed free of
cost to 400 glaucoma specialists in India and 8000 specialists worldwide.
Dissolve to tight shot of middle aged slum woman speaking: Enga arealai…oru
kaalathala…saakadai illai, toilet illai, thanni illai…onnumey illai…aana ippo
ellamay…irukku…adhuku moola karanam yaaru theriyuma…
Camera pulls back she holds a placard with WILLINGDON written on it…
Cut to CWCF volunteer taking a walk in Annai Sathya Nagar and explaining hot
Willingdon helped a slum of 500 people get piped water supply, toilet in each home, daily
garbage clearance, underground sewers, concrete roads, good healthcare including TB
treatment and Alcohol de-addiction, a community hall, a re-built temple, adult education,
employment opportunities, concrete roofs and counseling sessions for better living.
Dissolve to tight shot of former alcoholic talking: Enna ellaarum kudi kaaran kudi kaaranu
thalli odhukinappo…enna TTK Hospital help pannanga…TTK hopsitala Willingdon help
pannanga…eppidi theriyuma?
Pull back he’s holding a placard saying WILLINGDON’S RELAPSE PROJECT
TTK hospital doctor explaining while walking down a ward: The Willingdon Foundation
helped us build a 6000 sq. ft. wing to rehabilitate those relapsing into alcoholism and drug
addiction. The wing can accommodate 22 patients. It also has a separate area to
accommodate family members of the patients. The wing equips patients with the essential
skills to tackle the addiction.
Dissolve to tight shot of a Dr. Shantha talking: The Adyar Cancer Institute has been able to
do some fantastic work on Breast Cancer only because of Willingdon Foundation. They’ve
not only given us 98 lakhs of rupees to study the role of hereditary transmission in Breast
and Ovarian Cancer. They’ve also helped us with this….
She holds a placard on which is written TUMOUR BANK.
As a doctor provides a walk through of the Adyar cancer institute, we can hear Dr. Shantha
say: Thanks to Willingdon, we have managed to set up India’s first tumour bank with
specialised storage facility for collecting and archiving tumour tissue samples for use in
education, training and research.
P a g e | 6
Dissolve to tight shot of young dude talking: The only thing that was holding me from
donating blood was the equipment in some blood banks. When I heard Jeevan Blood Bank
has the latest equipment, I started giving blood regularly. And I must thank Willingdon for
it. Do you know what they did?
He points to a placard with FREE NAT EQUIPMENT on it…
Cut to Jeevan Blood Bank walkthrough with Dr. Sreenivasan explaining: Jeevan is the first
100% component blood bank in India and we are the only centre in South India complying
with ISO standards. Over the past 11 years, we have collected over 63000 blood donations
and made available over one lakh units of safe blood and blood components to the
community. Willingdon donated the NAT(Nucleic Acid Testing) equipment for detecting
Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. The current practice is to test blood by ELISA method
for antigen and antibodies. Less than 5% of donors who test positive for Hepatitis B
marker are capable of transmitting the disease and currently all blood testing positive is
discarded leading to an annual cash loss of nearly Rs.12 lakhs and also preventing close to
1000 voluntary donors from donating in the future. The NAT method increases blood safety
by reducing the window period of transfusion transmissible diseases and also help to
reduce blood discard by over 95%. This facility will also be provided at a nominal fee to
smaller blood banks thus providing a revenue stream for Jeevan. The NAT unit can also be
utilised to collect umbilical cord blood stem cells currently being discarded at child birth.
This would provide a ray of hope for patients with Leukemia and 70 other diseases.
Dissolve to tight shot of Sneha volunteer speaking: We are Sneha. We save many lives
everyday by dissuading the young and the old from committing suicide. When we needed a
new home, we just turned to one big donor…and she points to a placard with CWCF
written on it…
Dissolve to tight shot of a man speaking: We are Mukti. We help the handicapped with
artificial limbs. Do you know how Willingdon helped us? He points to a placard with
OFFSET PRINTING PRESS written on it.
As the man provides a walk through of the Mukti facility, he explains: Mukti has been
helping over 2 lakh people live with dignity. Our volunteers have been provided them free
artificial limbs for over 20 years. But how do we take care of our volunteers? Willingdon
solved this problem by funding an offset printing press in our premises. The income earned
from this press, provides for my volunteers’ expenses…
Dissolve to young exec: You know Chennai is probably the Diabetes capital of India. And
yet 25% of people are not even aware of this deadly disease. And even among those who
know, not many are aware that prevention is the best form of cure. I am grateful to
Willingdon for addressing this issue…I thank them for the…
Young exec points to placard: PACE PROJECT
Cut to Dr. Mohan doing a walkthrough of Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and
explaining the PACE project: The Prevention, Awareness Counselling and Evaluation or
P a g e | 7
PACE is a study funded by the Willingdon Foundation. It is perhaps one of the biggest
studies done on diabetes in the country. PACE covered a sample size of about 26,000
people spread over Chennai. The primary objectives of the study are to explore the
prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and attendant complications in the population. The
sample covers all income groups. A critical finding of the study is the low awareness level
of diabetes in the sample population. About 25 per cent of the sample population was
unaware of the existence of diabetes. About 78 per cent of the sample did not know that
diabetes is preventable. About 22.3 per cent of the sample population was termed obese by
the study's findings. There is a three-fold increase in the prevalence of diabetes as one
moves from being lean to obese said Prof. Mohan. CWCF donated Rs 99 lakhs towards the
study. Willingdon followed this up by providing 50 lakhs for another study called the
CURES study. Over 62 research papers have been published from the findings of these
studies. The new Indian Diabetes Risk Score (IDRS) evolved from CURES is now used all
over India and in South East Asia to screen for Diabetes.
Dissolve to tight shot of woman talking: Naan, moonu masathila amma aaga
porane…mudhalla endha aaspathriki povomo nu bayamma irunduchu…Aana ippo
Willingdon naala…andha bayamay pochu…eppidi theriyuma?
Camera pulls back she’s holding a placard bearing NURSING HOME CERTIFICATION
written on it.
Cut to doctor in Child Trust hospital explaining: Maternal mortality is a big problem with
private nursing homes. Another issue is babies born with birth defects. A study says that if
nursing homes had the proper equipment, 50-70% of birth defects can be averted. But does
your nursing home have this equipment? How does one find out? Willingdon Foundation
came up with a smart idea. They funded a study by ICRA to certify maternity clinics in
accordance with international standards. Thanks to this study 34 nursing homes in
Chennai have been certified. If someone admits themselves into these 34 nursing homes
there’s always a higher chance of safe delivery.
Dissolve to man standing in University of Madras building: Guess who helped the
renovation and restoration of the 150-year old beautiful and unique Senate House of the
Madras University?
Dissolve to man in Ramakrishna Mission speaking to the camera: Guess who helped us in
constructing a new school in earthquake hit Gujarat?
Dissolve to man from HOPE: Guess who provided us computers to impart new skills to
poor women seeking jobs?
Dissolve to woman: We are from Kalaiselvi Karunalaya. We help discarded kids find new
parents. Guess who adopted us when we needed funds?
Dissolve to doctor near mobile van: Guess who provided Durgabhai Deshmukh Hospital a
mobile treatment van for providing medicare for poor old people near their homes?
P a g e | 8
Dissolve to blind man: Enakku velai vaangi kodutha Nethrodayava yaaru help pannanga
theriyuma?
Fast cuts of facilities provided with Willingdon logo.
Last section with Mr. Balasubramaniam: We’ve funded research in Diabetes, Glaucoma,
Breast Cancer and Birth Disorders. We’ve provided a helping hand to organizations like
Udavum Karangal, SCARF, Banyan, Sivaskathi, Mukti, Sneha, Spastic Society, Mithra,
Gyana Deepam, Karna Prayag and scores of other organsations. We’ve disbursed 13.64
crores of rupees in the last 10 years helping the blind see, the lame walk, the unlettered
write and the unemployed, employed. We are willing to help a lot more organizations
provided they meet the following criteria: a) The Trust must have been running for
minimum 3 years b) The trust should have a valid 80 G exemption certificate c) Give us 3
years of audited accounts, copy of the Trust deed, list of Trustees and their donor list.
That’s it. If the cause is worthy, we’ll fund it for the greater common good.
Freeze.
Dissolve to smiling kid holding a thank you placard.
Strains of Vaishnava Jana toh can be heard once again…

LEATHER FACTORY OUTLET, CHROMPET
- Voice Over
P a g e | 10
Situated in Chromepet, Contemporary Leather has a state of the art leather processing unit
and a reputation of manufacturing quality products while adhering to strict quality
compliance procedures. The facility houses a tannery as well as a modern leather
processing factory with cutting edge equipment, eco friendly methods of manufacturing
and proper methods of effluent disposal.
Most of the leather is processed using environment friendly methods. Tanning using
vegetable tanning agents is a popular procedure. Vegetable tanning consists of stringing
hides on large frames, inside large vats, and exposing them to tannin. Tannin is a natural
product found in tree barks, wood, leaves and fruits of chestnut, oak and hemlock trees.
Hides are transferred to many different bins during this step, each containing a stronger
solution. Vegetable tanning is a day long process and produces a quality end product is free
from decay and shrinkage. These hides produce flexible leathers which are used in
manufacturing luggage, furniture, leashes, belts, hats, car upholstery, harnesses and a
variety of such products.
Post the tanning procedure the leather undergoes dying which involves adding moisture
back into the skin. Hides which have been vegetable tanned are bleached and soaked with
oils, soaps, greases and waxes. The skins then made firm by passing it through a machine.
This is known as rolling. After this the leathers are stretched and dried out in a heat
controlled room. The final step involves polishing the skin. The grain surface is covered
with a chemical compound and then brushed. Light leathers are buffed and sandpapered to
cover imperfections. Waxes, pigments, dyes, glazes and oils are used to give the leather the
final touch.

From Day 1, our mandate has been clear: To utilize the interest earned from our corpus to fund worthy causes championed by deserving institutions in the domains of social welfare and public service… Dissolve to a little girl in school uniform smiling. Pull back. She’s holding a placard with the message: OUR INITIATIVES Dissolve to Mr. Balasubramanyam speaking to the camera: Let’s get one thing straight – Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation is not an NGO. We don’t raise funds for causes. We don’t seek money from the public. We don’t have an army of volunteers serving people directly. We are just a charitable trust with a corpus of funds. Our role is to find a worthy cause. And then to fund the worthy cause. In the 10 years of our existence, we’ve supported over 70 remarkable organizations by disbursing 13.64 crores of rupees… And I can tell you, every rupee we’ve given has changed a life somewhere… Dissolve to face of old man wearing dark glasses. Now to develop strategies for early diagnosis and treatment of this disease we require data on the prevalence, distribution and pattern of Glaucoma. There is a severe paucity of such data from India. If this data were available it would be possible to identify persons at risk of developing the disease….This is where Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation helped us. They’ve provided us 2.9 crores of rupees for the Chennai Glaucoma Study. They’ve helped us create a special facility with all the necessary equipment and tools to examine 7800 persons aged over 40 from all parts of Tamil Nadu. The 4.2 million invaluable data points we’ve gathered was distributed free of cost to 400 glaucoma specialists in India and 8000 specialists worldwide. When I heard Jeevan Blood Bank has the latest equipment, I started giving blood regularly. And I must thank Willingdon for it. Do you know what they did? He points to a placard with FREE NAT EQUIPMENT on it… Cut to Jeevan Blood Bank walkthrough with Dr. Sreenivasan explaining: Jeevan is the first 100% component blood bank in India and we are the only centre in South India complying with ISO standards. Over the past 11 years, we have collected over 63000 blood donations and made available over one lakh units of safe blood and blood components to the community. Willingdon donated the NAT(Nucleic Acid Testing) equipment for detecting Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. The current practice is to test blood by ELISA method for antigen and antibodies. Less than 5% of donors who test positive for Hepatitis B marker are capable of transmitting the disease and currently all blood testing positive is discarded leading to an annual cash loss of nearly Rs.12 lakhs and also preventing close to 1000 voluntary donors from donating in the future. The NAT method increases blood safety by reducing the window period of transfusion transmissible diseases and also help to reduce blood discard by over 95%. This facility will also be provided at a nominal fee to smaller blood banks thus providing a revenue stream for Jeevan. The NAT unit can also be utilised to collect umbilical cord blood stem cells currently being discarded at child birth. This would provide a ray of hope for patients with Leukemia and 70 other diseases. Dissolve to tight shot of Sneha volunteer speaking: We are Sneha. We help the handicapped with artificial limbs. Do you know how Willingdon helped us? He points to a placard with OFFSET PRINTING PRESS written on it. As the man provides a walk through of the Mukti facility, he explains: Mukti has been helping over 2 lakh people live with dignity. Our volunteers have been provided them free artificial limbs for over 20 years. But how do we take care of our volunteers? Willingdon solved this problem by funding an offset printing press in our premises. The income earned from this press, provides for my volunteers’ expenses… Dissolve to young exec: You know Chennai is probably the Diabetes capital of India. And yet 25% of people are not even aware of this deadly disease. And even among those who know, not many are aware that prevention is the best form of cure. P a ge | 7 PACE is a study funded by the Willingdon Foundation. It is perhaps one of the biggest studies done on diabetes in the country. PACE covered a sample size of about 26,000 people spread over Chennai. The primary objectives of the study are to explore the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and attendant complications in the population. The sample covers all income groups. A critical finding of the study is the low awareness level of diabetes in the sample population. About 25 per cent of the sample population was unaware of the existence of diabetes. About 78 per cent of the sample did not know that diabetes is preventable. About 22.3 per cent of the sample population was termed obese by the study's findings. There is a three-fold increase in the prevalence of diabetes as one moves from being lean to obese said Prof. Mohan. CWCF donated Rs 99 lakhs towards the study. Willingdon followed this up by providing 50 lakhs for another study called the CURES study. Over 62 research papers have been published from the findings of these studies. The new Indian Diabetes Risk Score (IDRS) evolved from CURES is now used all over India and in South East Asia to screen for Diabetes. Cut to doctor in Child Trust hospital explaining: Maternal mortality is a big problem with private nursing homes. Another issue is babies born with birth defects. A study says that if nursing homes had the proper equipment, 50-70% of birth defects can be averted. But does your nursing home have this equipment? How does one find out? Willingdon Foundation came up with a smart idea. They funded a study by ICRA to certify maternity clinics in accordance with international standards. Thanks to this study 34 nursing homes in Chennai have been certified. If someone admits themselves into these 34 nursing homes there’s always a higher chance of safe delivery. We’ve disbursed 13.64 crores of rupees in the last 10 years helping the blind see, the lame walk, the unlettered write and the unemployed, employed. We are willing to help a lot more organizations provided they meet the following criteria: a) The Trust must have been running for minimum 3 years b) The trust should have a valid 80 G exemption certificate c) Give us 3 years of audited accounts, copy of the Trust deed, list of Trustees and their donor list. • 11.
P a ge | 10 Situated in Chromepet, Contemporary Leather has a state of the art leather processing unit and a reputation of manufacturing quality products while adhering to strict quality compliance procedures. The facility houses a tannery as well as a modern leather processing factory with cutting edge equipment, eco friendly methods of manufacturing and proper methods of effluent disposal. Most of the leather is processed using environment friendly methods. Tanning using vegetable tanning agents is a popular procedure. Vegetable tanning consists of stringing hides on large frames, inside large vats, and exposing them to tannin. Tannin is a natural product found in tree barks, wood, leaves and fruits of chestnut, oak and hemlock trees. Hides are transferred to many different bins during this step, each containing a stronger solution. Vegetable tanning is a day long process and produces a quality end product is free from decay and shrinkage. These hides produce flexible leathers which are used in manufacturing luggage, furniture, leashes, belts, hats, car upholstery, harnesses and a variety of such products. Post the tanning procedure the leather undergoes dying which involves adding moisture back into the skin. Hides which have been vegetable tanned are bleached and soaked with oils, soaps, greases and waxes. The skins then made firm by passing it through a machine. This is known as rolling. After this the leathers are stretched and dried out in a heat controlled room. The final step involves polishing the skin. The grain surface is covered with a chemical compound and then brushed. Light leathers are buffed and sandpapered to cover imperfections. Waxes, pigments, dyes, glazes and oils are used to give the leather the final touch.
