This Australian Year 4 Geography lesson guide teaches students about Australia and Africa. It is a 1 hour activity divided into two phases. In phase one, students use mapping tools to mark and label Australia and African countries, and draw flight lines between Australia and places like Madagascar. Phase two has students add picture overlays of Australia to the map and descriptions using the text tool.

along until you
see Australia

5. Type in Australia
here
Click on ‘add
marker’
Australia marked

6. Type in Africa
Zoom in to see
names of African
countries

7. Click on ‘edit
overlays’ tool to
move your marker
To mark another country
in Africa use the search
tool to type in country’s
name. Example
‘Zimbabwe’.

10. Click on ‘Flight
line/Great Circle’
tool

11. Start from the mark
on Australia,
dragging the line to
the mark of an
African country. In
this case, Madagascar

13. PHASE TWO OF THE 1 HOUR ACTIVITY

15. Right click on the
picture. Then click
on ‘copy image URL’

16. Click on the ‘place
image overlays’ tool.
Right click and
paste

17. Use the ‘edit overlays’ tool to
move the picture to its correct
country (Australia).

20. To add in the
description for the
picture, click on the
‘ABC’ text tool
Reposition the
description with the
‘edit overlays’ tool
