Screeching Weasel
The Howard Theatre
Friday July 24, 2015
“Screeching Weasel helped nurture the burgeoning American scene that thrived on a
meld of infectious melodies and punk opposition”—Chris Nelson, MTV
“For those who though all pop/punk notables were ensconced in California’s Bay Area,
Chicago’s Screeching Weasel proves that just isn’t the case”—A.V. Club
In 1986, Ben Weasel went to a Ramones show and that show proved to be the
start of a very long, successful career. Shortly after the gig, Ben Weasel and John
“Jughead” Pierson formed Screeching Weasel, a pop-punk group that mixes hardcore
fury with sweet melodies. The band recorded its self-titled debut in 1987 with Underdog
Records, of which only 3,000 copies were pressed. Fast-forward to today and Screeching
Weasel has put out over a dozen albums which bands all over the world have taken
inspiration from, making them one of the most influential bands to come out of the early
1990s pop-punk explosion.
Earlier this year, Screeching Weasel announced that the group, with entirely new
members excluding Ben Weasel, was signed to Todd Congelliere’s Recess Records and
had plans to release a new album, Baby Fat Act 1. The new concept album features
appearances from Blag Dahlia of Dwarves and Roger Manganelli of Less Than Jake, and
was funded entirely on crowdsourcing website Indiegogo. The album is the premiere of a
two-part rock opera, following the group’s 2011 release First World Manifesto.
On the road with Screeching Weasel are The Queers and Mr. T Experience. The
Queers, a punk rock band hailing from New Hampshire, are known for their humorous,
lyrics that made them a staple in the punk scene ever since they dropped their first EP,
Love Me, in 1982. Mr. T Experience, also known as MTX, came from the same Berkeley
area that’s produced many punk rock greats over the years. Ten studio albums and
multiple international tours under their belt, MTX continues to make new music, most
recently releasing single “King Dork Approximately.” With new band members and new
songs, Screeching Weasel makes their way to our nation’s capital with The Queers and
Mr. T Experience on July 24, one of the tour’s three east coast dates.
