A slab of early Elvis - The Beat (part), Rhodette's Song (a.k.a. Roadette's song, from Ian Dury's
'Kilburn' days) and an early version of High Fidelity. All of which moves me to jot down my
memories of the infamous "Sydney riot" of 1978.
The theatre was just up from where Hoyts is/was, in George St. Elvis' "retarded Buddy Holly" look
had put me off buying the first album, but I was hooked by This Years Model (as were all the
British critiics, as I'd pre-read).
So I eagerly rocked up, with Cherie. "Jo Jo Zep" were the support - denied setup time (after the
first song, Joe said, "well, that's the f'ing soundcheck!"). But Elvis and his band were just
astounding - playing with real passion and ferocity (I'll always remember Lipstick Vogue).
Then they were gone... and didn't return for an encore. I didn't mind - they'd played everything I
knew, and then some. But the general crowd wasn't happy - after an eternity of shouting and foot
stomping, a row of seats was ripped up.
Then others followed, and some ended up on the stage - all in all, 20-30 got shifted. It was the
crowd's own "Anarchy Down Under" show - because our new-found hero was gone. When they all
finally did return - for the Imperial Bedroom show/s at the Sydney Opera House - they were quite
subdued.
