This is a presentation I did about the Scrabble game for an English course in 2006. Gameboard screenshots are from the Wordbiz application used by the Internet Scrabble Club (www.isc.ro) to play online.

Editor's Notes
Hi, I’m Jean-François and I’m pleased to be with you today for this presentation, which I hope you’ll enjoy. I first thought I’d talk to you about pro wrestling...
... or maybe about heavy metal, both of which I really like watching or listening. But then I decided to talk to you about one of my other passion, maybe even more extreme, and that is :
playing Scrabble. In five minutes, I’ll try to speak to you about the history of that game, make you play a little bit and give you some tips. Does everybody here knows how to play Scrabble? The goal of the game is to make words with the 7 letters you got on your rack and with the letters already in place on the board. Usually the game is played between 2 to 4 players, but tonight we will play altogether with the same letters on our racks, a way of playing used in tournaments and on the Internet, which is called Duplicate mode. One letter of the first word you’ll play must be placed on the pink square in the middle of the board. Each letter count for a certain amount of points. On the screen you can see that t – e – a and l are worth 1 pt, d is worth 2 pts and the question mark, which is a joker and can be used in replacement of any letter, is worth zero. Colored squares are called premium squares and they multiply the amount of points awarded: dark red cells "triple word", pink cells "double word", dark blue cells "triple letter", and light blue cells "double letter". If you can place all the seven letters on your rack, you get a 50 points bonus. So let’s start right now with the letters you see on the screen. You must find a word and place at least one of its letter on the pink square on the middle of the board. You must place your word from top to bottom or from left to right. You cannot place it diagonally. Find the best word you can and try to make the most points as possible. I’ll talk a little bit about the history of the game and then I’ll ask you what you found. Scrabble is a popular word game and board game in which 2 to 4 players score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a 15 x 15 game board. Scrabble was invented by an American architect named Alfred Mosher Butts. He wanted to devise a game that was half luck, half skill. Butts calculated the letter frequency and their value by meticulously combing the front page of the New York Times. Too many S’s made the game too easy so he reduced them to 4. His first idea, called Lexico and played without a board, was developed in 1931. It was later that the popularity of crosswords gave Butts the idea of combining the letters with a playing board. However, Butts was never able to market the product and it was James Brunot who would do it in 1948 after that Butts sold him his rights. Brunot lost money in the first 4 years, but thereafter, word-of mouth recommendation brought a deluge of orders. Also, in 1952, the Chairman of Macy’s, the biggest department store in the world, played Scrabble on holidays and decided that his stores had to sell that game. That’s why in 1953 Brunot was unable to match the demand so he sold his rights to a leading manufacturer, Selchow and Righter, who had previously rejected it. Now the game is sold in 121 countries in 29 different languages versions. Worldwide, one hundred million sets have been sold, and sets are found in on out of every three American homes, which makes it the world’s best selling word game. The National Scrabble Association sanctions over 175 scrabble tournaments and more than 200 clubs in the U.S. and Canada every year.
