The document defines representation as the mediated presentation of people, things, ideas, places, etc. by the media. It discusses how representation involves describing or depicting something to call it up in the mind. Representation is a constructed process that involves selection, organization, and focusing of content by the media to direct the audience's attention in a certain way. This process of mediation is how representations are formed to present a version of reality rather than reality itself.

Unsupervised Learning and Modeling of Knowledge and Intent for Spoken Dialogu...Yun-Nung (Vivian) Chen
The document discusses automating the process of building spoken dialogue systems. It proposes five goals: 1) inducing domain ontologies from unlabeled data, 2) learning relationships between concepts, 3) deriving surface forms, 4) decoding utterance meaning, and 5) predicting user behavior. The goals aim to enable dialogue systems to automatically acquire knowledge and understand users in new domains without manual annotation.
Jennifer Haberkorn: "Clinton vs. Trump: The Future of U.S. Health Care" 10.28.16reportingonhealth
This document summarizes key issues around health care in the United States in 2017, including the future of the Affordable Care Act depending on who wins the presidential election. It notes that the ACA marketplaces need improvements, drug prices are a growing issue, and the Children's Health Insurance Program must be reauthorized. It outlines Hillary Clinton's proposals to modify the ACA and allow people to buy into Medicare, as well as Donald Trump's position to repeal the ACA and replace it with a less defined alternative centered around health savings accounts and more state flexibility.
A2 G325: Critical Perspectives in the Media (Section A)Belinda Raji
This document provides guidance for students preparing for Section A of the A2 G325 Critical Perspectives in Media exam. Section A consists of two compulsory questions assessing students' theoretical evaluation of their practical production work. Question 1a requires students to reflect on the development of their skills over all their production work from AS to A2 levels. Question 1b requires analysis of one selected production in relation to a key theoretical concept. The document offers advice on preparing responses, including creating a timeline of all work and focusing answers on areas of the mark scheme. It also provides prompts for students to reflect on their creativity and use of digital technology in their practical work.

2) Examples of model student responses with marks given according to the assessment levels.
3) Instructions for students to mark additional model responses and complete homework reviewing the examples.
This document outlines the steps for a homework assignment on analyzing reality television shows like Big Brother or social media platforms like Facebook from a postmodern perspective. Students are asked to: 1) Explain how their case study demonstrates postmodern features like non-linear narratives and simulation; 2) Compare their case study to traditional media forms; 3) Discuss how it challenges traditional relationships between texts and audiences; 4) Analyze how it enables audiences to behave differently than in the past; 5) Consider how it impacts representation; and 6) Identify arguments for and against their case study in terms of impacts and implications.
Over two years of study, the student developed important research and planning skills that contributed to creative decision making in media productions. At AS, the student analyzed conventions from online media texts to help plan an opening title sequence. Planning was presented using Emaze, which improved over time. Poor time management at AS negatively impacted productions, but skills strengthened at A2 with better delegation, organization, and prioritization. Improved planning allowed a clearer focus on creative vision through pre-production materials like storyboards and shotlists.
This document outlines several key features of postmodernism that could be discussed in a short essay. It lists pomodality, hybridization/bricolage, intertextuality, voyeurism, self-reflexivity, non-linear narratives, dystopian narratives, flattened affect, hyperreality, nostalgia, and the blending of high and low art as important postmodern concepts. It also briefly introduces some influential postmodern theorists like Baudrillard, Foucault, Lyotard, Jameson, and Zizek. Finally, it provides potential topics and examples to illustrate several of the postmodern features in 3 paragraphs or less, such as exploring how the idea that nothing is original through the lens of remix culture

End-to-end pipeline agility - Berlin Buzzwords 2024Lars Albertsson
We describe how we achieve high change agility in data engineering by eliminating the fear of breaking downstream data pipelines through end-to-end pipeline testing, and by using schema metaprogramming to safely eliminate boilerplate involved in changes that affect whole pipelines.
A quick poll on agility in changing pipelines from end to end indicated a huge span in capabilities. For the question "How long time does it take for all downstream pipelines to be adapted to an upstream change," the median response was 6 months, but some respondents could do it in less than a day. When quantitative data engineering differences between the best and worst are measured, the span is often 100x-1000x, sometimes even more.
A long time ago, we suffered at Spotify from fear of changing pipelines due to not knowing what the impact might be downstream. We made plans for a technical solution to test pipelines end-to-end to mitigate that fear, but the effort failed for cultural reasons. We eventually solved this challenge, but in a different context. In this presentation we will describe how we test full pipelines effectively by manipulating workflow orchestration, which enables us to make changes in pipelines without fear of breaking downstream.
Making schema changes that affect many jobs also involves a lot of toil and boilerplate. Using schema-on-read mitigates some of it, but has drawbacks since it makes it more difficult to detect errors early. We will describe how we have rejected this tradeoff by applying schema metaprogramming, eliminating boilerplate but keeping the protection of static typing, thereby further improving agility to quickly modify data pipelines without fear.
