Scientists Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins discovered the double helix structure of DNA but did not realize its significance. James Watson and Francis Crick were able to determine the double helix structure of DNA and its function based on Franklin and Wilkins' work, as well as knowledge about genes being the carriers of hereditary information. DNA contains unique genetic information for each individual that is passed down from parents and determines physical traits.
