are well received
– Engineering works at schools based on STARS Issues
lists
– School Streets
– Increase number of travel plans submitted again
15. Official

QUESTIONS?
Q Modal shift:
A We will know once the schools have submitted their data
Q More school engagement:
A School obstacles include: resourcing, priorities, changes in contacts. We are advising staff to discuss
the STP at PTA meetings to try and engage parents in the process. A figure of 60 unengaged schools was
mentioned, but this is misleading as that includes private nurseries (some of which may no longer be
operating), colleges, universities and schools that would usually do 1 travel plan, but have 2 DfE numbers
and so are registered twice – the unengaged number is closer to 30 as many are yet to submit with
deadline being the end of June.
Q Pupils to map their routes to school at the start of the new year:
A This is the recommendation for the mapping activity and we encourage that with schools, we had a
Junior Travel Ambassador Co-Ordinator who worked directly with pupils, but that aside, it is an activity
on STARS and we can reiterate that as a first step for next term.
Q More School Streets:
A The key is school support and again resources, priority for schools, engineering layout, displacement
concerns. We also need to identify a funding stream especially if ANPR is requested (this is the
preference for the schools we’ve approached so far). Hopefully a few good quality SS’s will encourage
other schools and in the meantime we will continue to promote them where feasible.
Q Putting information in public domain:
A Agreed to endeavour to put more information on website, which is currently being updated and more
on social media as activities are offered.
Q Cycle parking ratio at schools:
A The planning requirement is a minimum of 5 spaces per classroom (depending on the nature of the
school. Cycle parking constraints include: planning/conservation area requirements, space (especially
the smaller independent schools), approvals from trusts/diocese for changes on the land, funding.
Schools were asked several times this year to update their cycle parking data, but it would appear, from
what’s in STARS, that many haven’t and the information is not accurate enough to draw any conclusions.
I will push for an update again in the new year.
Q Accident Stats/Travel Plans
A Engineering requests schools enter on STARS are usually of a safety concern, engineers will consider
accident data when they review these. They also ID hotspots annually and consider local STP’s when
designing improvement schemes.
