To Whom It May Concern:
I had the distinct pleasure of serving with Sergeant Matthew Scallan from
January 2015 to May 2015 as his Platoon Commander. In that short amount of
time, Sergeant Scallan’s performance exceeded all of my expectations. He was
one of the most proficient Section Chiefs and exemplified what it meant to be
a Sergeant in the Marine Corps. Sergeant Scallan initially fulfilled the
duties of a Howitzer Section Chief within the platoon. As a section chief he
was in charge of 10 Marines and responsible for millions of dollars worth of
gear and weapons. It soon became clear to me that he possessed initiative,
intelligence, and a work ethic that were second to none. Sergeant Scallan was
responsible for the safe and accurate firing of thousands of 155mm high
explosive artillery projectiles in a complex and ever changing environment, a
serious responsibility that is not taken lightly. In these situations,
Sergeant Scallan was able to remain calm and make sound, timely decisions
when others could not. In this duty, Sergeant Scallan excelled, and produced
results that were beyond expectations.
For the last month I served with Sergeant Scallan, he filled the billet of
Local Security Chief. In this billet, he was responsible for the entire
battery's defensive posture. This billet requires someone who can operate
independently without direct supervision, and who possesses the ability to
work with all different agencies and personnel within the battery. Sergeant
Scallan absolutely has those qualities, and his performance was again
outstanding. He was able to forecast problems, and provide solutions long
before being told to do so. Additionally he was able to articulate those
solutions in a clear and concise manner.
Sergeant Scallan is one of the best Marines I have had the pleasure of
serving with. He is an extremely hard worker, who possesses all of the
intangibles that make him a rare breed. There is absolutely no doubt that he
will continue to be successful in whatever he does. Any organization would be
extremely lucky to have him on their team.
