William Saroyan was an Armenian-American writer born in 1908 in Fresno, California. His parents had emigrated from Armenia after Armenians faced persecution under the Turkish Empire in the early 1900s. Saroyan often wrote about Armenian families and the immigrant experience in his hundreds of stories, novels, and plays. He died in 1981 with half of his ashes buried in California and half sent to his ancestral homeland of Armenia.
