1. Santo Domingo Travel Guide
Introduction- Destination
Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and one of the
Caribbean's oldest cities. Its walled, cobblestoned historic core, the Zona
Colonial, has buildings that date to the 1500s, including the cathedral, which
was the first built in the New World. On the cafe-lined Plaza de España is the
Alcázar de Colón palace. It’s now one of the city’s many museums, displaying
notable medieval and Renaissance art.
Santo Domingo was founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, brother of
Christopher Columbus, as the capital of the first Spanish colony in the New
World. The original city site was located on the left (east) bank of the Ozama
River and was called Nueva Isabela in honour of Queen Isabella I of Spain. It
was destroyed by a hurricane, however, and was rebuilt in 1502 at its present
location on the right bank of the river. It became the starting point of most of
the Spanish expeditions of exploration and conquest of the other islands of the
West Indies and the adjacent mainland.
Santo Domingo is the industrial, commercial, and financial centre of the
country. Its industrial development has been greatly influenced by the
construction of hydroelectric dams, which furnish its industries with
inexpensive electrical power. The country’s most important industries—such
as metallurgy; the manufacture of refrigerators, petrochemicals and plastics,
cement, and textiles; and food processing—are located in Santo Domingo. The
importance of services, including tourism, to the city’s economy has grown
since the late 20th century.
Santo Domingo claims the oldest university in the Western Hemisphere: the
Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (founded 1538). The city’s other
educational institutions include the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University
(1966) and a technological institute (1971). Among the noted cultural
institutions are the National Theatre, the music conservatory and the National
Symphony Orchestra, the Museum of Dominican Man—important for its pre-
Columbian collection—and various public and private libraries, especially the
National Library. The two most prominent colonial monuments in Santo
Domingo are the cathedral and the palace of Diego Columbus. The cathedral,
in Spanish Renaissance style, was built between 1514 and 1542. The Columbus
Lighthouse (Faro a Colón) reputedly contains the remains of Christopher
2. Columbus. The historic district of the city was designated a UNESCO World
Heritage site in 1990. The city has numerous parks and green spaces, including
the National Botanical Garden, established in 1976. Pop. (2002) urban area,
1,887,586; (2010) urban area, 2,581,827.

"buenas noches", or "buenas tardes".

social occasions. Arriving between 15 and 30 minutes later than the stipulated time is
considered on time.
Often several generations live in the same house. Show deference to the family elders.

You may leave a small amount of food on your plate when you have finished eating.
When you have finished eating, place your knife and fork across your plate with the prongs

wages earned by people working in the service industry, tipping is generally expected. Where

the case in the US, Canada and countries in South America.
Dominican plugs are the same as most found in the USA, and so is the type of
current (110 Volts/60 HZ), so only Europeans will need a converter. Most
electronic devices now operate in the 110V till 240V range, making an adaptor
often all that is needed.

coast of the Dominican Republic that was established in 1976. It consists of a
limestone karst plateau with conical hills, sinkholes and caverns, and there is a
large area of mangrove forest on the coast.
Covering an area stretching 1,600 km² (618 square miles), Los Haitises National
Park is one of the crown jewels of the Dominican Republic’s national park
system. Los Haitises–which translates into “hilly land” in the Taino language–
attracts numerous visitors who come here by boat to see its magnificent series
of 30-meter (98-foot) high rock formations jutting out of the water. The park
also boasts extensive mangroves along its bay, which is dotted with cayes that
are home to multiple bird colonies, as well as a series of caves known for
having one of the highest numbers of petroglyphs and pictographs in the
country.
You’ll easily spot the endangered Ridgway’s Hawk, the Hispaniolan Piculet, the
Hispaniolan Woodpecker, the Hispaniolan Emerald, as well as pelicans, frigate
birds, herons, and many more majestic birds in flight over the park’s extensive
landscape. Los Haitises also nurtures one of the DR’s few remaining
rainforests, once used as a filming location for the feature film Jurassic Park.

colorful. It is the perfect picture of the beach paradise and belongs to Mano
Juan, the fishing village founded in the first years of the 40s of the last century
southeast of the largest of the adjacent Dominican islands. It measures 110
square kilometers (22 long and between 5 and 6 wide). It has about 12 beaches,
9. three lagoons and three caves called Cotubanamá, Hoyo de la Lechuza and Hoyo

being visited for its exotic beauty and for its little explored and exploited
attractions.
Among the most important, include its caves and springs, which have traces
left by the Taino culture. Among these are Anamanai and Gaviota
(seagull) Spring.
The habitants of Mano Juan are very friendly and helpful. Anyone who dares to
reach this small village will find gift shops, a restaurant, a hotel with 10 rooms
and houses with rooms for the accommodation of tourists. These are rented
between RD $ 300 and RD $ 400 per night.
Fish is one of the delights of the hand-made gastronomy, but you can also
taste dishes based on yautía, yucca, yam, rice and other agricultural products
that are produced on the island.
Its beautiful beaches, with blue-green waters, are kept in good condition,
because they are constantly cleaned.

4.10 Zona Colonial
City of History
Coordinates: 18.4749° N, 69.8865° W
Ciudad Colonial is the historic central neighbourhood of Santo Domingo and the
oldest permanent European settlement of the Americas. It has been declared a
World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is also known as Zona Colonial or more
colloquially as "La Zona".
Going through the gorgeous streets of the Colonial area, you’ll discover buildings
from the early years of the 1500s, such as the Alcázar de Colón Fortress,
the Primada Cathedral or the Ozama Fortress, among many others.
16. The main streets composing its valued heritage are El Conde, Las Damas and Las
Mercedes.
An interesting tour around the area can be done by entering the city via The
Count’s Gate that access to a pedestrian street with the same name located in
front of the Independence Park and which passes through the area until
reaching the Ozama river. Along its bank there are located a large number of
Colonial buildings that were witnesses of the resurgence of the city and how it
was progressively expanded inwards. Needless to say, you can only visit these
remarkable constructions prior payment of the corresponding ticket.
This initial route, finishing in Spain Square, will allow you to discover the main
points of interest of Ciudad Colonial: places such as the Columbus Park, the
Ozama Fortress, the Cathedral, the National Pantheon or the Alcázar de Colón
(Columbus Alcazar).
The gate of “El Conde” especially stands out, as it was built during the second
half of the 17th century, in what was known as the old San Genaro Bastion. At
the entrance you will be able to read “Dulce et decorum est pro Patria mori” (It
is sweet and glorious to die for one’s country). On this very same door the
independence of Cuba was declared in 1844. Moreover, it is one of the main
spots from where you can take a bus to go to the south of the island, since
numerous buses, taxis and public cars stop there.
The second door protecting the Colonial area is known as Puerta de la
Misericordia Gate or Great Gate, located in Palo Hincado Street. It dates from
the end of the 16th century or beginning of the 17th, and it is part of the 16th
century walls that used to protect the city.

5.6 Submarine (Altos de Chavón and Submarine Tour)
A delightful trip
Category: Active, explore, marine adventure
On this tour, you will explore both the Chavon River and the Caribbean coast of
the Dominican Republic. You will visit the impressive artist village of Altos de
Chavon, cross the river by catamaran and go on an underwater adventure with
a semi-submarine around Bayahibe. And all in one day. You first view the artist
town of Altos de Chavon, a model of a European village made entirely of stone.
It is above the river and the views beg for a selfie (or more). In the city itself,
imagine in the amphitheater what it must have been like when Frank Sinatra
performed here. You will visit the archaeological museum and other places
before boarding the catamaran, ready for a trip on the river. On board you can
sit down for a lunch buffet with Dominican specialties. And meanwhile,
subtropical landscapes, bird sanctuaries and plantations pass you by. Then
transfer to a semi-submarine for an underwater cruise along Bayahibe to the
Atlantic Princess shipwreck. You snorkel among hundreds of fish in the coral and
if you don't feel like wet feet, look out the windows at all that underwater life.

23. 5.8 Inland safari
Exhilarating
Category: Relax, Discover
From Puerto Plata to Punta Cana, hopping on an inland safari is a great way to
get a feel for the Dominican countryside. Major tour operators offer a variety of
excursions into the nearest villages and towns, where you’ll be the only tourists,
as you ride deep into the hills on all-terrain trucks, or drive in your own ATV or
quad, taking in the scenery and meeting our locals along the way. In Puerto
Plata, excursions take you along the north coast’s lush hills and into traditional
homes where you’ll sip on freshly chopped coconut to cool off. In Punta Cana,
safaris ride through towns like Otra Banda, where meat shops hang their
produce outdoors, and end with sun and sand at Macao Beach.
Bump and ride past cattle, stop in villages for fresh coconut water, and tour
plantations: the DR’s inland safaris are a window into the country’s scenic
countryside.

Best Beaches

turquoise waters nudging talcum powder sands and storey-high palm trees

24. 6.1 Boca Chica Beach
A quiet beauty
Coordinates: 25.9965° N, 97.1501° W
Visit the well-known Boca Chica Beach just 30 km from Santo Domingo in the
south of the Dominican Republic
Known as the beach of the city of Santo Domingo, Boca Chica Beach is located
just 30 km east of the Dominican capital, located in the Bay of San Andres, in the
Dominican Republic.
Discover this incredible beach of fine white sand where every weekend a crowd
of people looking for a splendid beach day meets in the refreshing tropical
waters of the Caribbean. It is one of the most familiar beaches in the area since
the water is shallow and the bottom is sandy.
It is also a well-known beach where you can find street vendors offering
massages to seafood and necklaces, and there is also a wide variety of
restaurants in the area where you can taste the national cuisine.
It is also a great place to browse the area and discover the beauty of the tropical
coast of Santo Domingo from the sea. Just 400 meters from the coast, a coral
reef in the shape of a half circle runs along the beach, so the waters that reach
the shore are very calm.

Dolio offers an easy and tranquil tropical escape near the capital city. A favorite
of well-heeled urbanites who flock here on weekends, Juan Dolio’s 10-kilometer

6.3 Plaza Güibia Beach
Tourist attraction in Santo Domingo
Coordinates: 18.4588° N, 69.9067° W
Located on the South Coast of the Dominican Republic, Guibia Beach is a popular
surfing beach on the island. In fact, it was one of the first places that modern
surfing was introduced to the islands. Though it was once a popular beach
amongst swimmers as well, some of the local resorts have directed their
attention to other beaches, making this a beach of seclusion for vacationers who
want to escape the crowds.
You should consider stopping by even if you are not staying in the vicinity. If
hustle and bustle isn't your style, you'll appreciate that the majority of beaches
in the Dominican Republic are known for their privacy and seclusion. Of course,
some vacationers come to the Dominican Republic looking for activity, and are
better suited for one of the few lively beaches, like Guibia Beach.

26. 6.4 Playa Caribe
A beautiful escape
Coordinates: 18.4083° N, 69.4999° W
Also known as Embassy Beach, Playa Caribe is a small beach located between
Boca Chica and Juan Dolio. The waters in this inlet are usually calm in the
morning but can develop waves in the afternoon, making it a good place for
boogie boarding.
Facing a picturesque cove, this half-moon shaped beach attracts surfers and
boogie boarders on the weekends, flocking here from the capital for a bit of
wave action. There are surfboards for rent, and you can get an introductory
lesson. Fill up afterwards with a seafood lunch.

6.5 Playa Guayacanes
A stunning gateaway
Coordinates: 18.4205° N, 69.4511° W
Guayacanes beach is located just west of Juan Dolio. It offers plenty of palm
trees for relaxing in the shade. This beach is quiet during the week and busy on
weekends and holidays. The waters are shallow and usually calm.
Playa Guayacanes is a peaceful beach on the southern coast of the Dominican
Republic and is located in a fishing village east of the capital Santo Domingo.
Those who long for peace and relaxation will find what they are looking for on
the fine sandy beach lined with palm trees, because haste and stress are a
foreign word here. Especially local families feel at home here. While the parents
enjoy a cool cocktail in one of the beach bars or leave the everyday stress behind
them in the shade of a palm tree, the little ones can splash around in the shallow
water or explore the colourful coral reef in front of the beach with a snorkel.
27. Especially recommended is the fresh fish, which is caught here in the morning
off the coast and then freshly prepared on the plate of the restaurant guests.

the Province of San Cristóbal, west of Santo Domingo.
This beautiful beach with greyish sand and little pebbles has two different
areas: one is bigger than the other and has lots of restaurants and bars. You will
enjoy a complete day in this incredible place
It is the perfect place for those who seek calm and peace, as it is not a very
crowded beach so you can take a refreshing bath in its crystal-clear warm
Caribbean waters without throngs of tourists.
Besides, the landscape of the Caribbean coast is magnificent, so you can escape

6.7 Kite Beach
Coordinates: Kite Beach (Beach geo coordinates: 19.763437, -70.422567)
28. The Kite Beach is located in the north of the Dominican Republic east of Puerto
Plata in the tourist center Cabarete and attracts kitesurfers from all over the
world. This is where kitesurfing in the Caribbean came into being. Furthermore,
this spot is one of the world's best spots, because both amateurs and experts
get their money's worth here. In the morning the wind is weakened and the
water is shallow, which is why beginners and children from the age of 12 years
try the wind kite. In the afternoon, on the other hand, the wind picks up and the
experts race through the water. The sky then fills with colourful dragons - a
spectacle that can also be observed from one of the beach bars.
The Kite Beach is located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic in the
fishing village Cabarete east of Puerto Plata. The beach borders Playa Cabarete,
which has made a name for itself as a windsurfing meeting point for the
Caribbean. Kite surfing was practiced for the first time at Kite Beach in the
Dominican Republic. Meanwhile this relatively small beach belongs to the best
kite areas of the world.

6.8 Playa Bonita
Beauty of Caribbean beach
Coordinates: 19.3108° N, 69.5693° W
Playa Bonita is as pretty as its name suggests–a crescent-shaped, cozy white
sand beach lined with a variety of boutique hotels, villas, and restaurants. The
western edge of the beach is as still as a swimming pool, attracting families,
while the eastern side–facing hotels and a kitesurfing school–offers active waves
for the adventurous. Pair a day at the beach with lunch at the excellent Hotel
Atlantis’s beachfront restaurant, for French and Caribbean cuisine by the sea.

29. 7. Local Food & Beverage
The Dominican Republic has a rich and varied cuisine. As a former Spanish
colony, the local cuisine shows a strong Spanish influence, but it also has roots
in African and Taino (the indigenous population) traditions. Dominican cuisine
shares similarities with several other Latin American cuisines, particularly Puerto
Rican and Cuban.
While many dishes tend to focus on meat and starches (mainly rice), fruits and
vegetables also play an important role in Dominican cuisine. In fact, almost every
cafe serves a wide selection of freshly prepared tropical fruit juices. The
delicious juice options include chinola (passion fruit), piña (pineapple), lechosa
(papaya), zapote (sapote), tamarindo (tamarind) and mango.
There are a variety of traditional ingredients that many Europeans and North
Americans may not have encountered before. One example is yuca or cassava,
a root that is used as a vegetable and also made into a flat bread called casabe.
Another is tayota, a type of squash. A final example is platano or plantain, green
bananas used in both side dishes and main courses.
Many Dominican dishes are prepared with sofrito, a mixture of sautéed
vegetables, herbs and spices. The ingredients for sofrito include onions, garlic,
green peppers, tomatoes, thyme, parsley, coriander, cilantro and vinegar

7.1 La Dolcerie
Perfect place for breakfast/brunch
Coordinates: 18.4704° N, 69.9365° W
Category: Dominican, Eclectic
This cutesy, kid-friendly restaurant/bakery looks like a French café where chic
ladies do lunch. It's buzzing for all three meals (it's the "in" brunch place for
residents of this fashionable Piantini neighborhood). Happily, it's still
moderately priced, even for apps the size of mains, and generous dishes such as
one of the croque madames (perhaps with pulled pork added) or eggs Benedict.
At breakfast, they squeeze your juice and tempt you with house-made croissants
and beignets. For lunch there's grilled sausages and such sides as homemade
waffle-cut fries in silver baskets. Dinner includes delicious mofongquitos
(plantain cups filled with veal osso bucco). Signature desserts are luscious. If only
the service was so good. Try to snag a seat on the less noisy terrace.

Casual dining

31. This popular family-friendly chain occupies a spectacular location overlooking
the Caribbean. Waiters scurry throughout the two floors and outdoor dining
area doling out Dominican specialties such as mofongo (mashed plantains with
meat) as well as standard meat dishes. An inexpensive buffet is another option
and the fruit drinks hit the spot.
Hotel concierges still recommend this Malecón institution for Dominican food
(it's now a local chain of four), although it has been branded as fast food. It's
touristy, yes, but Dominicans still make up the majority of customers. Start with
mojitos at sunset. The three-tiered, outdoor setting overlooking the sea is
unique here. Opt for the excellent sancocho (a rich, meaty stew), mofongo
(stuffed mashed plantains), or sopa de pescado (fish soup). Breakfast and lunch
(a buffet) is served, as well as dinner: it's open 24 hours, and the clubbers come
calling for late-night sancocho. The prices are reasonable, but the service is,
unfortunately, somewhat inconsistent Be careful crossing the street here: use
the crosswalk, and at night on the Malecón be alert for sketchy characters.

Category: Spanish
Although it is easy to come across Latin American and Caribbean fare in the
Dominican Republic, traditional Spanish cuisine is not as prevalent. Don Pepe's
is one of the spots on the island where you will find good, wholesome Spanish
food.
Don Pepe specializes in Spanish food with a little something for everyone. One
can expect the setting and food here to be informal. This dining option's open
during both dinner and lunch, so give it a try. You might discover some dishes

7.7 Pat`e Palao
Classic place with elegance
Coordinates: 18.4770° N, 69.8837° W
Category: European Brasserie
Everyone we asked recommended Pat'e Palo as the best restaurant in Santo
Domingo's Zona Colonial. Styling itself as a European brasserie, the enticing
menu of executive chef Saverio Stassi manages to seem both exotic and familiar
at the same time, ranging from ceviche to sea bass and foie gras to ossobuco.
The classic French tartar was served with truffle oil, mushrooms, and other
accompaniments and was an intense — and surprisingly filling — way to start
the meal. The short ribs were melt-in-your-mouth tender and came with an
interesting potato tortilla; the creamy coconut curry shrimps were fat and juicy.
There are various tasting menus you can try if you don't want to go à la carte,
including a rum pairing menu. If you'd rather stick to the grape there is, of
34. course, an extensive wine list. The restaurant is set on the buzzing Plaza España,
and the outdoor terrace is a fun and lively space for dining and people-watching.
There is a bar and a lounge for those who would rather eat indoors. The service
is attentive. Pat'e Palo is popular with tourists and locals, and it's advisable to
make a reservation in advance. Expect to spend at least $100 on a meal for two
with wine. But if you are going to splurge, this is the place.

Dominican cuisines (an excellent quinoa shrimp salad is one of the least
expensive items on the menu). An outdoor patio and upstairs wine and cigar bar
